Great expectations
Driving up to Oulton Hall, you're instantly wowed by the stunning grounds – it's a real head-turner. But once you hit the first tee, the magic fades fast. The fairways? More 'fair-woes' with their rough conditions. And those temporary tee boxes? They're a letdown, especially when you think about the green fees they're asking. It's like paying for a gourmet meal and getting fast food. This place has the looks, but when it comes to the golf experience, it's more bogey than birdie.
Good course
Plenty of dog legs and lacks a bit of variety but it was well worth the price paid and the greens were in reasonable condition.
Bit disappointed
Heard a lot about the club but was a little disappointed, The course signage wasn’t great First time playing had no idea where to go from the 2nd tee . Some other holes through woods we just had to walk and hope for the best , luckily we caught up with the players in front so we followed them .Also a few tees were off mats because the tee boxes were in such bad condition and not all the tees had distance on them .
Disappointed...
Start with the good points. Not a bad layout and the grees were good .....
Fairways not been cut, The worst tee boxes I've ever played (literally just dirt), pace of play was a joke and followed round three people sharing one set of clubs drinking pints.
Up, down, fairway indifferent
Played as part of a Golf break with a colleague.
Was a little sceptical about this course before arrival in that many different reviews and for a 4 star hotel they were not very complimentary. I believe from the hotel information that the course cost over a £million to construct- IMHO it is time to spend another £million or so to revamp and improve the course plus some of its poor bunkers.
There was not much sand in some of the bunkers as it took my colleague 4 attempts to get out of hole 27- couldn't get under the ball due to rock hard sand- very poor in some other bunkers too.
So day one we played conventional holes 1-18. These were somewhat challenging with a few doglegs, distance and on the back 9 very hilly areas- so you need to be pretty fit to last the 18 holes.
After completion we ventured into the Claret jug for £6 pints of Madri! However, this clubhouse was very nice and overlooked the 18th approach/hole.
Day 2 saw us being asked to complete holes 19-27 the come back to holes 1-9. Strange but hey ho- we later asked a member why this was- due to many people making bookings, as well as visiting societies 19-27 were interesting-2 back to back Par 5's making the walking to these interesting. The signage over these holes not the best especially moving to the 2nd part of these 9 holes across the car park etc.
Most of the tee boxes on all the holes were poor for this 4 star hotel, quite a few GUR for July really? The course should be in its prime during summer! Quite a few times it was interesting seeing where the fairway actually started and ended due to the length of the grass overall.
During our 2nd round we walked to the 1st whereupon the hole completion became slow and tedious in that their had been many 4 balls allowed to utlilise 1-18 and consequently slowed our game pace to well over 4 & 1/2 hours from 3 &1/2 day one- so not very good at all!
The hotel itself is very nice & we would recommend staying over night- just wish the golf courses on a 4 star establishment met the standards that the hotel set!
Top condition
Not a fault to be had, greens running true no bobbling, well set out with on course drinks buggy out all day
Enjoyable rounds
After reading the reviews I was slightly out off to play. After playing twice in the last few weeks across all 27 holes I was impressed by the course layout and condition. Fine fairways and true greens. I can see why maybe in the winter months it can become boggy due to the undulating land.
Some really interesting holes. The back nine on the Calverley course were most challenging. Would recommend.
The rain didn’t help!
Last played this course in 2004 and i could have been teleported back to that day and the course would have been just the same as I found it.
Disappointed by the standard of the greens and fairways for the cost to play, plus the off road walkways and path condition.
Am not a complainer just giving my option.
Needs time off to recover
The setting, facilities and hotel made me think the golf would match. Sadly, not the case. Apparently the course is rarely closed, if at all over winter and it definitely shows. Some greens look like fairways, and some fairways look like rough. Not worth the money.
Council Course at Best
This course really has gone downhill over the last few years. Just looks like a course that has been left to rot which is a real shame as it was one of my favourites growing up. Right now I would say the local council courses are in better shape than this place but the big difference is that the council courses aren’t charging £40-£50 a round. Have to be crazy to pay that kind of money to play here. AVOID
Very poor condition
The staff were friendly but the course was in very poor condition, only photo copied paper score cards were available , the bar was closed so couldn’t get a drink or anything to eat after the round. I have played the course many times over many years but this was the worst condition I have ever played on. Seems to me that since ownership had changed the course has gone down hill. The cost of playing is too expensive for its condition.
Does the job
Great course probably not worth the price post Winter but definitely in the Summer, well looked after.
Off course facilities quality
Disappointed with the condition of the course, greens fine, fairways shabby
A beautiful course ruined
I booked to play at what we thought was a high end resort course, when we arrived at the pro shop the pro was polite and explained as its been a while since I played , the course was well signposted. We arrived on the first tee full of anticipation to play a top course in summer condition. The first tee was heavily divotted and in poor condition, we teed off to find the fairways had been slit and when arriving at the gree to find the greens holotined and heavily sanded, but full of holes so more top dressing was required. This was never told at the time of booking or by the pro in the shop. As we continued around the course the tees got worse to include big 3ft holes where I can't imagine what caused these. The second tee has no grass at all on it ! The third tee was dug up for relaying and the tee was just a tee marker on the fairway. Unfortunately the course quality didn't improve and we ended our 18 holes thinking have we played a underfunded municipal course? Not worth £30+ , more like £5 max . The clubhouse is great , food and drink perfect . God knows what has become of the course because last time I played 5 years ago it was very nice .
Great course and super friendly staff!
Played here a few times in summer and winter now. Well maintained over winter months and very playable across the whole course. Staff were very welcoming and friendly! If I were to get a membership, I’d get one for this club!
Good autumn golf
The course was in good shape overall. Greens were excellent - great pace and well kept, fairways were very good and enough hazards to keep you honest and thinking about your shot.
The bunkers were awful, however. Only one had actual sand in it. The rest were rock hard and full of stones which did detract from the round the green play. We mentioned it afterwards and were told they were “work in progress”. For a course of this supposed standard it was disappointing.
That aside, as it was mid-week, it was quiet and there was only a fourball in front who let us play throug, so pace was great.
We played the first nine and then 19-27 which was a great choice to have. Although you can’t select that option on GN, we asked in the shop and the guy changed it for us. I would recommend the extra 9. But, get a buggy as 19 and 27 are a bit of a hike from the clubhouse.
Will be playing again.
Just fix the bunkers, please.
Nowhere near value
Pro shop staff wanted me to pay, though I’d pre-paid on GolfNow; resolved by showing confirmation.
Course condition was very disappointing: Raghu tee boxes, un-mown fairways, diseased and woolly greens, sandless bunkers.
Seriously, only worth about half the £33 we paid: definitely won’t be back!
Sllloooowwww first 9 but a good course in good shape.
We were late teeing off, as were the guys in front and those in front of them. And we had a 2 ball behind us so we were waiting at the tee, middle of the fairway etc with guys breathing down our neck. It was just too busy. But after the first 9 those in front and behind dropped off (maybe members having a quick 9), and it was much better. A good layout with plentyof trees. The greens are all pretty flat so not very challenging but all in good nick. I would recommend and will definitely play again… when it’s quieter.
