This course was very fun to play.
I really enjoyed this course. It was a fun course to play with all the elevated tee boxes and great scenery. Course was in good condition and had some challenging obstacles. Will definitely play again.
Nice course layout through the oaks with some nice elevation changes
This course is heading in the right direction for playability I have played this course often over the years and the conditioning is the best it has been in many years. They are putting the emphasis on improving the greens and it's working. This hidden gem has always deserved someone knowledgeable to tend to it and it now appears to have that. For those of us living in the Southern San Joaquin Valley in the summer time a trip up to Horse Thief is always enjoyable I can highly recommend this course with one word of caution when putting check for Elk prints in your line. I'm not kidding!
Control your driver.
This is an enjoyable course to play. No two holes are alike. Lots of interesting looks from the tee boxes. If you have trouble hitting the ball straight, you can be in for a frustrating round. The fairways were in good shape and the greens in really good shape. I'll definitely play Horse Thief again.
Pleasant surprise
Price is right and the condition of the course was actually better than I expected. I checked "Requires attention" for course condition only because it is not quite at the maintained stage,
A work in progress/
Natural obstacles make this a challenge. The boulders, the trees, the elk ...I saw two on the fairway at the lake.. The greens are good, and you have to hit the fairways to score well. The bunkers sare watered when the greens are...and makes the sand compacted. Overall, I hear the staff is working to make this the fine course it was years ago. I'll be back to play here again soon.
Challenging
The course is in the best shape I have seen it in since I have been playing here for about a year. Under new management and looks like they are doing a great job maintaining it as well as working on it more. The greens are firm and are a little fast. The greens are in much better shape than before. I can only imagine they will get better. Overall great course. It's worth a drive up to the mountains to get out of wherever you are to enjoy a nice day on a beautiful course.
Great course with a different feel
The course was great to play. It has a different feel being tucked away in the hills of Tehachapi. Course was maintained well, it could use attention but in no way was it bad. Nice layout and challenging holes. It was nice to have to make smart decisions not just use driver PW-8 iron on every hole like some courses.
Horse thief golf course
The course club house appearance needs some TLC. Weeds growing out of walkway cracks. The handrails, drop off club rack, out door carpet n steps to restraunt look like they haven't been touched in a 100 years. The putting green area is not very inviting and to look at the driving range you'd rather NOT hit any warm up balls. With that said, the course itself was in surprisingly good shape. After I checked in and saw the surroundings, I was sure the course was the same but to my surprise, that wasn't the case. I enjoyed the round and the pace of play was the best. We played as a twosome and took our time and finished in less than 3 1/2 hrs.
This was a fun and challenging place to play
beautiful course in the hills full of oak trees. elevated tee boxes and winding fairways with boulders and huge trees in the middle made this a real challenge. I am used to playing several straight, flat courses regularly so horse thief was a great change. $50 holiday rate was a great price. you should check it out!
beautiful course with oak trees and boulders all over.
Great course, recommend it. It has great t boxes, great fairways and plush greens.
This course had challenging greens.
The course was pretty much wide open due to the cold 38 degree temperature at our tee time. The pro shop starter seemed very suspicious of our Golfnow low price green fees and asked to keep my printed receipt. When we asked if we could get a 20-minute early start, he demanded a prompt tee time at the time indicated in the Golfnow receipt although there was nobody on the first hole at all.
The fairways were cut but needed repair in many areas. The greens would not hold a shot without backspin. We did not need to repair a single ball mark for us or anyone else. The greens played smooth and a little slow if you brushed aside the debris on many of them.
Boulders everywere
good course. greens are a piece of ...... tough..
some really unique holes tough..
give it a try
Enjoyed the layout. Greens in good shape.
It would be worth the road trip for any foursome to have a great day on a good golf course.
