Untouched 9-Hole Ross gem
One of golf's great treats is this 9-hole Ross course from 1922, virtually untouched ever since, with cham, ease, elegance and an uncluttered look through some varied New England terrain. A real treat and accessible though officially private.
Ross was a Boss
The reason Whitinsville is not well known is the classic mistake of judging a book by its cover. In this case the cover would read "9 Holes"
Since apps like golf now/advisor hit the green golfers have been able to discover and play a larger variety of courses. I'll be the first one to admit that when traveling and searching for courses if I noticed that of course is only nine holes I tend to move to the next one. However in this case it would be a big mistake.
Whitinsville is a classic Donald Ross course and it makes sense that it's ranked 89 in the top 100 classic courses in the country. The list has a few courses built in the late 50's and 60's, but the majority of the courses were established pre 1940.
Whitinsville GC oozes Donald Ross design characteristics with large fairways and greens, tough rough, and fast greens which you don't want to overshoot.
Furthermore, on every hole except #5, Ross shows you the entire hole from each tee box, as to say, "what you see is what you get, good luck." This course is very challenging, however also great for high handicappers.
I have brought high handi friends who have been pumped that they made it 9-18 holes without losing a ball, despite scoring well over 100. This course is also a great one for seniors who don't hit the ball over 200 yards.
I guarantee you will love this revered 1925 Donald Ross Design. Enjoy!
Play below the hole
Great course! beautiful fairways but very fast greens that all run from back to front. Keep the ball in the fairway and play a half club short on approach. Local Seniors clogged up the back nine with some sort of mini event so we had to jump ahead and played 10 and 11 after we finished 18. ugh.
Top 9-hole course
I heard it was one of the best 9-hole courses in the "country" and it lived up to its billing. Donald Ross at his finest. Large, undulating greens and fairways and a variety of holes. Overall a wonderful course. Too bad it is only 9 and not 18 holes.
Classic track
Great day at Whitinsville. The whole course is great but #9/#18 is especially fabulous.
We were disapppointed that we were not allowed to walk. The stated reason for needing to take a cart was to maintain pace of play, but as a twosome they should have seen that this was not an issue for our group. If you want to walk (and experience the course the way Donald Ross intended) you will have to go somewhere else.
All is True
Suffice to say, that Golf Now brings an outstanding course to the table, and often with discounts.
I'm not sure where to start. The staff (Frank and on course folks) were great. As a single I got right out, then played with some members on the back 9.
The course conditions are outstanding. As others have said, every lie was as good as one could want. And, warnings to stay on the fairway are spot on. The rough is excellent, but in a round, it'll bite you a couple of times.
The greens rolled perfectly. Fast, but not overly so. However, typical of Ross courses, pay attention to where you are. Downhill putts, yes, need attention.
There's relatively new sand in the bunkers, very soft, and I had some difficulty on the couple of occasions I needed to 'sample' them. More reps would help.
All in all, this course meets all the criteria for being as noted as it is. Worth a good ride to experience it. Par on the 9/18th is a great score, and caps off a great golf layout. Private for many years, we're fortunate Golf Now is on board, opening up a gem to a few more folks. Membership is reasonable if you live in the area as well.
A great Donald Ross design experience!
The course was immaculate! Greens were in great shape, putting true - even with gentle undulations you sometimes didn't see. The fairways were wonderful. Rough was manageable, and bunkers challenging. What a finishing hole, with the tee shot almost all carry over water!
I would gladly take the opportunity to play Whitinsville Golf Club again!
A gem
This course deserves every superlative. Friendly, exceptional maintenance and a great Ross design.
A great Donald Ross course that is well maintained.
It is a well maintained Donald Ross design that is fun to play. The staff was friendly and the pace of play was under 3.5 hours.
Pristine
This course has been rated #2 for the best 9 hole course in the country. It is pristine and every aspect is exceptional. The greens are fast but I like it that way. I would return.
Spectacular a
Whitinsville is likely to be one of the Best courses you will ever play. It is typical Donald Ross. Sloping greens back to front, wide fairways with many options. The greens are unbelievable. Fast, undulating, etc. Only nine holes but you can't wait to play it again.
marvelous design, great conditions, friendly staff, extraordinary value
Exemplary Ross design coupled with excellent condoitioning and friendly staff. Infrequent tee times for the public but well worth the trip
Sweet club
Gorgeous course, excellent staff, and great value with GolfNow!
Nine hole Donald Ross gem!
Well maintained and playable for all skill levels. Parkland/links style course. Fairways offer great lies. Green and bunkers well groomed. Five sets of tees allow an enjoyable 18 hole round!
Incredible opportunity - a classic "must play" course
Whitinsville Golf Club is very private. However, GolfNow had a fantastic Saturday afternoon deal - $50 for 18 holes + cart. I took advantage. I joined a very friendly and helpful member who guided me around the course.
This nine-hole course was a gem. It plays like most Ross courses I've ever experienced - elevated greens, various approach angles, and death awaiting anyone venturing above the hole or over the green. The conditions were perfect - the members do a pretty good job of picking up after themselves and fixing their ball marks.
Playing the same nine twice wasn't an issue. Hole 1/10 in particular played quite differently with an additional 40-50 yards. Hole 9/18 is a crucible - stay on the high (left) side the entire way until you reach the green. It's a famous golf hole that is a true privilege to play, even if you don't score well on it. Hole 4/13 is a fun driving hole with a big oak tree to carry - more fun the second time around.
The club only accepts cash, and the facilities are somewhat cramped. However, people there are friendly and gracious. And, there's an ATM on-site. Pace of play is fast.
If you see a deal for this course, take it. It's very hard to get out on Whitinsville otherwise unless you know someone. Don't pass up the opportunity to play a classic course.
Interesting Donald Ross Layout
I have heard so much about this course and was looking forward to playing it. I (14 index) played it with my 17 yr old son yesterday (who out swings me for distance) and found the course to be in great shape, difficult to play, but not exceedingly punishing. If I lived in the area, I might play it more often, but the difference in playing the whites for the front 9 and then the blues for the back 9 did not offer enough variation in playing the same holes twice. That said, it did give us a chance to redeem ourselves in replaying a hole we might have not played well in the front 9. Greens ran fast and true. wide open fairways with some significant swells and false fronts. Definitely a challenge, but then again except for a pitch and putt, all courses are a challenge for me. I love playing Donald Ross designs and glad I had this chance. That said, this region offers a lot of great golf courses and based on my play at Whitinsville, I would probably play other more diverse 18 hole courses that don't repeat.
Awesome Classic Design
Another great day at Whitinsville GC. I would join this private club if I lived here. I have played with nice people here, mainly members.
Nice conditioned course
I played as a single, the first one off in the morning, so I finished 18 holes in just over two hours. It was a rainy day so the course was clear. The course was fun to play and in very good condition. Came within one inch of a birdie at 18, which would have been nice from over 420 yards.
World Class
Already known as an outstanding and recognized Donald Ross gem, I can only add that the course is in every way equal to the billing. It is considered to be one of the top few 9 hole courses in the world. When the pga tour pros played at nearby Pleasant Valley years past, many would come to test this beauty.
The staff was great, and I got out right away on a weekday. The condition of the course was nothing less than pristine. Every lie in the fairway, every green was/is mint. It's obvious the members and players fix ball marks, and do everything possible to maintain this condition.
I listed the course as challenging, but not overly lengthy. Two sets of tees make playing the back much longer.
This is a longtime private course, that takes a few tee times, only through golfnow.com. The 9th/18th in particular, makes the list of top holes in the country.
What can I say, don't miss this course. It's worth driving some distance to play this one.
Riding is no longer required if you are invited to play the golf course
