About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2017.
The Champions Club at the Retreat was carefully carved from the canyons that surround the Cleveland National Forest. The golf course closely follows the natural contours and depressions of the landscape, providing a variety of elevation changes with which to contend. The undulating greens usually have multiple tiers and the hills and valleys guarantee a few blind shots and forced carries. Your shots won't need length necessarily, but they will need to be straight. Each hole offers not only a unique design thanks to the diverse terrain but also different, equally stunning views. To make this formidable golf course more playable for a wider range of skill levels, a 2011 renovation took out 16 punishing fairway and greenside bunkers but there are still plenty there to provide a challenge.

This course is permanently CLOSED
Sadly this course closed, yet they still maintain a website and answer the phones. I called yesterday and the person that answers the phone said they were closed indefinitely and didn't have any information if they will ever reopen thengolf course again.
Bring extra golf balls!
This course has an amazing layout with fantastic views. The course conditions doesn't match the layout, as most holes were not properly irrigated.
Lastly, this course is very challenging as most holes play very tight and require that you carry the ball either 150+ yards from the tee or 100 yards over a canyon. Any deviation will result is loss of golf ball.
Champion Retreat
Great golf course and facility
Friendley staff
Great experience
Eddie
Great views and challenging course.
Arrived early and met courteous desk clerks. Also the friendly starter, let us start half hour earlier due to gap in other groups. Pace of play just great.
Terrific views from elevated tees, could lull you into playing too relaxed. The course is challenging and demand precise stroke play. Miss the fairways and say goodbye to your ball, down the deep gulley or thick barranca bush. So choose your clubs and your shot wisely. For example, driver not required on 9' or 10. The front 9 is tough. Then you face the back 9, this is tougher. Had a great time despite the challenge. Looking forward to my next round to play a bit smarter and lower my score.
A real test
Where do I begin, from hole#1 to the finish it was an amazing test of golf skill. Amazing views, even more amazing and challenging holes. Thinking if you hit a very good tee shot you would breathe easier but not so. Wonderfully protected and elevated greens, multi-bunkered with amazing elevation changes, this is a supreme test of golf. Though the greens were recently aerated they still rolled true if not at their peak speed. (thank God!) If you want a round with amazing photo opportunities, dazzling hole views and elevations and a test of your skills ,this is the place.
Good
Started us on the back 9. When we made the turn they had sent a 4 some out the front 9 in front of us. Created a slight logjam for about 2-3 holes. Group behind us right on our tails thinking we slowed down, let them know it was 4some in front of us. Tough layout, definitely penalizes wayward tee balls. Great views of the mountains and canyons. Don't play here unless you've brought your A game or you don't care about losing balls. Lots of forced carries and narrow landing areas
Trenton
Recorders good time very difficult bagel read rattlesnakes running about pretty interesting
Pace
Weather was good pace was slow got to 10 log jam played front 9 over got in 18!
Breath-takingly beautiful.
Slope rating is off the chart. Played the course at 6,221 yards, seemed like 7,200.
Beautiful vistas with challenging shot making. Not a course for the sub-average player.
Desparately needs attention, however still a very, very beautiful course.
A must play when in the area.
What was Jack thinking?
This course designed ny Jack Nicklaus has a very unisusal layout with many uphill and downhill holes that play very difficult for the average golfer. The greens are well kept but very severe and difficult to play on many holes. There is trouble left and right on most holes so accuracy is a must. Fun for the better golfer but much too difficult for the average player. This course needs a redesign for better playabily and fairness
Great Course
Best looking cart girl in the I.E (Brittany)
doble booking
Our tee time was double booked and were asked to play with other people. We did not expect this arrangement and did not enjoy the golf simply we were not accustomed to playi with other golfers who are much better than us.
Need a second round
If you are playing this course for the first time....good luck. Various elevations and layout will drive you crazy and will cost you more than a few golf balls. Fairway conditions average, greens good shape. This course needs to be played a second time I believe to get the full enjoyment of a round as there are way too many blind shots and calculating distances can be a factor. If you are not comfortable with heights, you may want to opt out as not only will this test your golf game but your cart driving abilities winding through the canyons.
Yep.
A challenging course with plenty of elevation changes and interesting and challenging holes.
Great course very challenging
Beautiful course in a private community. Directions lead you to the gate and guard sends you down the road to the clubhouse. Very nice and friendly staff. The course if really beautiful and challenging. Bring a dozen balls to donate to the course as the play is through the canyons and hills. (I lost 12 and fairway roll of aggressive play will have you loosing balls) The tee box and fairways are in perfect shape and well taken care of. Greens are multi tier and really fun to play. A serious course for a super fair price. Golf carts had rang finders. A+++ course. Only gripe is no coffee in the early morning is available so bring your own. Club house cafe was open at the turn and was able to get coffee and food. Overall very impressed on how nice the staff was as well as how well manicured the course was. So fun but really challenging.
Nice
Great course, its in great shape. Ill be back soon!!
that is sad. I played this course a ton back in 2009-2012 and it was literally my favorite course to play. what are they doing with the course? Is it overgrown?
