Windy and Beautiful Seaside Course

A Charles Cobb designed gem of a course. The ocean winds are always a factor on this course, even on the holes the wind through the yaupon oak lined fairways. Each hole is unique and provide its own set of challenges,. Most of the greens are small, raised and well bunkered, The greens run smooth and fast, as you have to always be aware of the slope. I have found the course to always be in excellent shape and the bunkers are always raked. Its a course that is sporty and brings you back again and again.

The staff are all friendly and attentive to your needs. The bag drop people drive over to your car and load your clubs right there. The most memorable holes for me are 9 & 18 and they are exposed to the ocean winds. They are almost complete with their new club house that includes a restaurant and a well-stocked pro shop.

You'll be sure to fall in love with Oak Island Golf Course.

What has happened?

The condition of the course is awful. The golf holes haven't been changed in days as many holes are ragged with no clear cuts.

The fairways have little grass and are dust bowls in places.

The bunkers have little sand and are unkempt and rough around the edges.

Many of the senior tees have no grass. Teeing up in dirt.

The pro shop is closed and has no merchandise.

This was a big disappointment as the course has been such good condition the many times I've played over the last 4 years.

It will be a shane to lose this challenging course as Echi Farms is also close to closing

Response from on 04/28/2017:
Hi John, thank you for the review. We are happy to hear that the pace of play was quick and that our staff was friendly. We do however regret to hear that the course conditions were not up to par. This is not the standard we are trying to set for our golfers and will pass this note along to help make improvements. Thank you for playing and we hope to see you again soon.

Pin Positions Way Off

First the new greens are smooth and super fast.

I was told by the starter and there was a sign on the first tee that the Pin Position was #3. The golf cart had a chart and everything was going as set up on the chart until the 7th hole. Then the pins that were suppose to be in Front were in back and those in back were in front.. Very frustrating.

Gruesome Golf

The staff was friendly, but couldn't overcome the terrible conditions and the odd layout of the course. Start with the odd layout, many water hazards on almost every hole. These required odd layups on long par 4s. Like a long Par 4 where you have to hit a 7 iron off the tee as the hole bends so sharply left that all you can see is a pond. Oh there is a 150 marker sitting on a strip of land to the right of the pond. Oh, but wait, it may look like a 150 marker, but it's sitting on the 200 yard plaque on the fairway. Excuse me, did I say fairway. Forgive me! There is NO FAIRWAY. It's all ROUGH. There is 4 inch high grass where the fairways should be. Talk about being wet. They did have rain 5 days before. But it's still soggy all over the place. So drainage is nonexistent. There is a porta potty on the front side and a bathroom on the back. But we were forewarned that the bathroom on the back 9 hasn't been tended to in years. If you do go in there, I suggest you bring a club with you. There was only 4 other people on the course on a Sunday. So this will be a once in a lifetime experience for my wife and I.

Brunswick County Gem

A beautiful, old style golf course. Fast, Smooth and Undulating Greens are always a challenge. Fairways are comfortable in width and excellent condition. Tees are always in good shape. Wildlife abound especially on the 4th hole where there were 7 gators there recently. Bag Drop staff is friendly and will drive your golf cart to your car and let you drive it up to the clubhouse. Talk about service! The pro shop staff and Starters are also friendly and will give you some goof hints for playing the course. The ocean is right across the street and the wind can be fierce. The layout is very challenging with smallish greens that have many deep traps, but do have areas in front to bail out. Bring your A-Game and hit the right clubs and you'll have a round you'll never forget.

Magnificent Restoration - Donald Ross Jewel

The restoration of this Donald Ross course has put it back on my must-play list. I've played many Donald Ross courses, including Pinehurst #2 and The Muni is right up there with the best. The view of the wide green tees, greens and fairways are a sight to behold, especially if you played the course before the restoration. The green areas are elevated and surrounded by deep menacing traps, but the approaches are open with some with steep hills up to 10 feet high in front. The greens are smooth, reasonably fast and undulating. The traps are deep, plenty of sand and raked. The fairways are wide and in beautiful condition. The tees were flat and the grass was trimmed properly. The tees are long with many options for all levels of golfers. The pro shop is well stocked with merchandise and many good sale items. They have a snack area which is self-service as they sandwiches and hot dogs, snacks and beverages. It is a great walking course and there were many walkers on the course. We rode and played in less than 4 1/2 hours.

I highly recommend this course to all Donald Ross Lovers. I certainly felt like I was walking with Donald Ross as the course was beautifully restored to his original design.

Magnificient Golf Course

We thoroughly enjoyed golf at Old South. It was a beautiful course which starts each nine meandering through the maritime forest with it's huge old trees with the Spanish moss. Then each nine comes out to the salt marsh and a huge expanse of water. There were such a large number of birds and turkeys that made such loud noises in the forest that it sounded like a tropical jungle. Then we had deer leaping across the fairways. The golf holes were all unique and all could be considered signature holes on many courses. The greens were well designed with large mounding around the greens and a good assortment of sand and grass bunkers. The sand traps were all raked and the greens were reasonable fast. The Bermuda grass in the rough was cut down to a level that made finding our balls easy and the rough was challenging but playable. There was a tiny green with a pin floating on the pond near the clubhouse. There was a small tee and we planned to hit a few flop shots to the green when we finished. However the local favorite, a large alligator had made his home atop the floating green. We will have to wait until our next time which you can be sure that we will be playing Old South again. I would consider it one of the finest golf courses that I have played in the Carolinas.

Sporty Course with some Diabolical Pin Placements

A short course that I would classify as sporty. I used my 5-wood off the tees and that was sufficient. Interesting layout with some wild pin placements on some holes. It was the most fun we've had on a golf course and took tons of pictures. Course was in great shape, except the green had been treated and had grooves on them.

Absolute Gem

The course is on a small island outside of Beaufort, SC. The course winds it way around salt marshes and a maritime forest. The views are incredible. The course is challenging from the tips and the greens are smooth and fast. The clubhouse staff are friendly and helpful. The maintenance people on the course were considerate. We'll be back!

Rock Hard Fairways - No Grass

Where do I start? Let's start with the rock hard fairways where you can't tell where the fairways end and the hardpan with roots begin. The greens are not receptive and slow. It should be "Once in a Lifetime Experience", at best.

Golf Now Golfers Treated like Scum

First - The condition of the golf course was first rate and had an impressive club house and a good driving range.

Second - The golf club only allowed golf carts on 10 holes. Four Par 4's were off-limits to all golf carts at ALL Times as they had a small fence preventing carts from gaining access to the fairways. All the Par 4 holes that did not allow carts were dry and flat and did not appear to have any issue with wet surfaces or worn fairways. The 14th hole in particular was annoying as the cart part was high up in the woods on the right side of the fairway and required a steep hill to traverse down and back up.

Third - Some fairways, for no reason, had rough in the middle of the fairways. These included landing areas on the several holes and on one par 5 had pockets of rough that were just sitting in the middle of the fairway and could not be seen when hitting second shots on the par 5.

Fourth - The staff was rude and uncompromising in tee times. No one was playing the course, but the pro would not allow our foursome to go out early. There was a twosome behind us that also had to wait and they did not even offer them a chance to go out before us.

Obviously, this was a once in a lifetime experience at Talamore Golf Resort for the four of us seniors who were as old as 67.

They had no intention of making sure that we had a fun and enjoyable golfing experience. There are too many other golf courses in the Pinehurst area that treat golfers with respect and do everything they can, within reason, to help them have a great time on their golf course.
