Better Than Last Time

Off-season so all grass areas were dormant including the greens which were also recently sanded and rough. No idea what was up with the green on 15 which normally is the most difficult green I have ever played due to grade changes but it almost seemed like they are intentionally cutting the lower level longer to reduce the run-out now. Who knows. Last time I played the bunkers were hardpan but are now a light, powdery sand. Edges need work still but very very nice. Great pace but cart was an absolute dog. The place is shaping up slowly so I will be back. The place could be a gem if everything gets fixed up right

Unique layout

The course plays six par 3's, six par 4s and six par 5s so it is interesting in that aspect. Otherwise, a little above average in regard to layout. Relatively flat but it has a nice mix of berms, creeks, ponds and woods to keep you honest and break up what could be a boring track otherwise.

For winter conditions it was in decent shape but the greens needed to be mowed and were very rough. Traps are horrible though. Top sand is very nice. Get an inch below the surface and it is a parking lot. Saw too many of them during my round and in one the club was ripped from my hands after hitting a rock the size of your fist under the sand and in another, the top sand completely gave way while entering on a modest incline to reveal hardpack which caused my cleated shoes to slip and I fell on my tail.

Pace was good, cost was a little above average but I did get a hot deal which is why I chose to play there (used to be a PLP member there). I will be back eventually but it is highly unlikely it makes my rotation of local courses on a regular basis.

Good course

Overall it was a good experience. Course was in good shape but the pace of play was slow with no observed marshal to speed things along. Some areas were being renovated that did not show up on the cart GPS which was unfortunate. Range attendant was great, very personable and helpful as were the bag attendants. I might be back but there are many other similar courses in the Vegas area. Not a knock on the course, but I was hoping it would stand out from the other desert-style courses but it really did not.

Not your typical Vegas course

Nothing wrong with this course at all. Basic, straight forward fairways and greens golf. A muni course by every definition. But after a week of desert courses and hoity-toity courses, it is a nice change of pace. Grass is in good condition but was recently over-seeded so while having a cart, it would have been better to walk since it was CPO.

Pace was dreadful. At one point there were four foursomes on a par 3.

Staff is competent but most seemed bored. Bar/grille lady was great though. The local players I got paired up with were great which made the slow play more bearable.

Am surprised at the rate though. Paid less for better courses in Vegas.

Make the drive

Played four Vegas courses last week on a trip and have played about a half dozen others in the past few years from LV Golf Club to The Wynn. This course is IMO, the best overall experience when weighted against the price point. Clubhouse (being renovated/rebuilt) staff was great. Apparel prices were great and for Vegas, the green fee was great. Booked a Hot Deal and this course was the least expensive of my week. Starter was knowledgeable and affable. Layout is challenging but not to the point of stupid. Fairways and greens are in good shape. Never had to wait more than a few moments for forward groups to clear. About the only knocks I have on the course is the bucket of balls that came with the round was pretty small IMO but there were plenty of leftovers at other bays so that was offset, and the cart girl passed us on #1 letting us know she was on her way out for the day. Would have been nice if a replacement attendant was made available. Minor issues. Takes a minute to get to, but well worth the drive.

Winter Conditions

Enjoy this course as it mixes a few banal holes in with a few that are quite interesting for a nice overall layout.

Winter conditions but greens are in fair to poor condition regardless. Two are still recovering from freeze issue a year ago. Tee boxes are barren hard pan. Does not look like they have been moved since October.

Guy at pro shop was grumpy but OK overall, starter was very pleasant.

All bad issues were exaggerated by the glacial pace of play. 20 minutes late teeing off and it took 5-1/2 hours for the round. Nice weather brought out a lot of golfers but no marshalls to monitor play left the course completely mismanaged. Group in front had to hunt for drives on every hole and spent a good five minutes on every green, then would sit by green doing whatever for several minutes instead of clearing out.

Knowing what this course can be will bring me back, especially since this was the first issue with the bad pace of play, but if it does not shape up by late spring, the next time will be my last.

Covid, Covid, Covid

Still over 90 and they have no water facilities anywhere. Will let you get a cup of ice and sell you bottled water, but they have only one refrigerated case and it was broken.

IMO....If people are going to get weird over potential transmission of Covid from a pushbutton water jug, the lack of water REALLY needs to be conveyed on the website and at the time of booking.

Marshals....useless. Two groups of he-men in front of me, playing from the tips launching.... 200 yard drives that were never in the fairway, well over 3 minutes looking for balls and on some holes, spent up to 10 minutes just on the greens. One of the last times I played there I walked off because of this garbage. If you are the marshal, do your job,

Greens are horrible

Used to be one of my favorites but their prices kept going up so I had not been there in probably 3+ years.

Tee boxes, fairways, layout, all that stuff is an "A".

But....

They obviously got caught with their proverbial pants down during the abnormal, prolonged freeze in February as the greens are HORRIBLE. Gravel parking lot horrible. After 3-4 holes, we just gave up on putting as it was not worth the effort.

Traps are bad also as they do not drain well and many are a mix of mud and hard pack.

I would recommend the course just because of all the good things about it, but I would be very up front about the greenside issues.

Hopefully they get those things worked out and when they do, it will be a great tract across the board once again.

Not for the faint of heart

Really liked the course and wanted to give it five stars but there were a couple of hiccups.

Pace-Late mid-week morning. Nobody in front, nobody behind. Played with an elderly gentleman who had a staff caddy. I do not think we saw anyone until the last few holes. Never pressured.

Conditions - Understand the time of year, but seemed dry. Was well mowed but compared to what I had played in Vegas during the week, just seemed a bit off. Nothing horrible, just off.

Staff - Inside, pretty typical. Outside, the people were great from the bag boys to the starter. Caddy was for the other gentleman but he still gave me pointers about the layout (not green reading) and also helped watch my ball and made sure we both located our balls. Complimentary with my shots and had a way of putting a good spin on comments after bad shots.

Value - Pretty typical Vegas but due to everything else, very well worth it

Layout- Hard. A lot had to do with unfamiliarity, but a lot of the holes, you have no idea where the green is or what is lurking behind the rise/bend/sign (10th). Most holes play pretty tight and green would have to be considered on the small side. Greens? Good gravy. Designed by masochists with all the slopes and elevation changes. Absurd ridge in the middle of #5 and at either #12 or #13, there is a straight shot slope across the green (of course, my approach was just to the left and after chipping short of the green, the ball rolls across the fringe, all the way to the other side). Bunkers? Forget about it. If you have good control, obviously not has hard. If you spray shots even a little off line. Grin and just remember you are not at work.

Amenities-Did not eat but partner did and said it was great. Range is WAY off the beaten path. For the day/time, they had bays set up right in the middle of ground under repair. Only two of us so we both played forward in the better grass. They give you a bag of about 25-30 balls. Not near enough for me as I hit easily 3x that many before a round. Assume you have to go back to get more but there were plenty of unused balls left at other bays so I just scrounged those up. Would have been nice to have the target distances identified somehow. Balls themselves were a complete hodgepodge of brands/models which stinks due to the unknown consistency/characteristics between each brand. Did I hit that one better than the last one or was it a better ball??

Overall-Has a few low-lights/quirks, but overall a good experience. Did not play well at all but thoroughly enjoyed it and will be back if possible.

Beautiful day that started out great

Played as a two-some, each in our own cart. A bit windy but otherwise, gorgeous. Played 13 holes in 90 minutes including playing through some great HS kids that were walking and having to wait briefly at holes 12 and 13 for the group ahead to tee off.

Then the wheels fell off.

Never could determine for certain if it was all the group in front of us or if they were held up (do not think so). Two older father/son groups, and it was clear neither son were golfers. I get that, but the fathers, appearing to be veteran players, should have known better. Their course etiquette was horrible. Aimless driving around looking for balls. Never splitting up so one could be getting ready while the other hit. Marking EVERY SINGLE PUTT. Leaning on putters, completely ignorant about ready-golf. On and on and on. Marshal came by several times but did nothing. I blame them as they should have observed their play and politely made recommendations/encouragement to speed it up. On the par 3 15th, they were on the green, we were on the tees and two other 4-somes were parked in the shade behind us.

We considered playing through but they never acknowledged us and we would have been hitting into them without them being aware of it. After going 13 holes in 90 minutes, it took us two+ hours to get to the 18th tee box. Waited briefly for them but none of them were on the green yet so picked up our balls and went home.

Courses need to be more proactive about this type of play.

BTW, course was in good overall shape for the season. A little dry (tee boxes were very hard) but otherwise in good shape. for October in north Texas.

Clearly they are having money problems

I played this course last year and like it. Played it last week and it was pathetic. They have not watered in weeks, if not months. Greens are not even green, let alone the fairways. Way behind on mowing as well. Just not kept up. Seen metro area courses during the winter that are in better shape.

Guess the locals like it because while I was by myself and only saw one other person the whole round, when coming up #9 there had to have been 50-75 players all queued up at the parallel #1 hole. Anyway, to drive an hour to get there...not worth it if that is to be expected from now on. Waited a good 10 minutes at the pro shop for someone to check me in. One person was running the shop and the snack bar. Range was overrun as well. Only good thing about the day was unlimited range balls as part of the green fee.

Great, straight-forward course

Nothing fancy about this course, just straight-up golf. That being said, it is not a push-over muni course, either. Water is on a lot of holes, but rarely do you have to go over it though. Lateral stuff you just have to steer clear of. Enough elevation changes to make it interesting including 11 and 18 which are way up, just inviting you to knock the snot out of your drive. Boxes, fairways, greens and even the rough are in good shape. Only hit one trap and it was soft on top but packed under 1" or so, but I still got under the ball so it cannot be that bad. Range is awkward to get to, having to drive around 8 & 9 which probably annoys the players on those holes and it takes several minutes to get from there to #1. Carts are dogs that with two adults, really struggle. Not a problem, just an observation.
Will definitely be back

Very nice course for early February

Still winter but course is in good shape with greens rolling true. Recommend your first time to be with someone who has played there before as course moves up/down/left/right with several creeks coming into play and some shots are relatively blind. Packed with people trying to get in a game before the super bowl. Pace was slow, took almost 5 hours. Management needs to do something about local kids blowing air horns from backyards and behind trees, especially at 14th tee

The course is NOT part of Santa Barbara Resort

I have not played this course. Tried to. Booked direct through the course. On vacation, family had a "Resort for a Day" pass at Santa Barbara Resort of which this is adjacent, but apparently not a part. Was told I was to cancel my resort pass and instead, pay the fee of $230 at the pro shop instead. Transport to the resort/course was a mess as neither the resort nor course have their own shuttles, they contract transportation, and despite being told by Quarry staff that we would all be on the same shuttle, two showed up, one for me and another threesome, and one for the rest of my group that was only going to partake of the resort amenities. After a stupid wait of at least 45 minutes, one shuttle driver told me to pay the balance of $100 for the resort pass and I could then ride with my family. Arriving at the course, the lady at the pro shop said the $100 is not transferable as the resort and course are separate entities, and if I wanted to play, I would have to fork over the full $230. They said if they did get the $100 moved to the course, I would have no resort privileges afterwards, despite being assured on no less than three occasions that I would. So I had a choice, pay $330 for a round of golf on a course that by the way, they just aerated (great timing that would have been nice to know beforehand), and sit like a bump on a log until the rest of my group was done at the resort, or walk back to the resort since that was apparently paid for. I walked to the resort. But, not before being told I had to pay for the meal they prepared for me. Tired of the nonsense, I acquiesced and forked over $30 for the box meal and a coke. The coke was not part of the meal, I paid extra. Which by the way, they also stated there were no refreshment carts so I would have had to hump 18 holes of drinks had I played. Get to the resort, open the box, and it is a small ham sandwich and an apple. Total rip-off. While the staff appeared friendly via email and in person, there is a distinct language barrier. Needless to say, should you end up in Curacao wanting to golf, I would think twice about just how badly you want to play.

Out of my price range, but will find a way to get back

Day after Christmas so it was sort of my gift to myself, playing at a "hoity toity" resort club instead of my usual under $40 courses. Met by a bag boy on the curb. Cool. Pro shop guy was great and wanted to make sure I had everything I needed. I arrived 90 minutes ahead of tee time so he told me I could go out whenever I was ready. Grabbed my cart with bag loaded and my name on it (cool) and headed to the range. Biggest disappointment. Range is a small cage about 30 yards long and only about 6-8 bays. Hard to make swing adjustments under those conditions. Marshall/starter was very nice, helped me and the other of two-some with local rules and what to look for. Absolutely loved the course. Must play in the short grass or you are on a steep uphill/downhill lie or in rocks. Loved the elevation changes. Caught up to a 2-some in front of us and joined with them. They had played before which really helped. Only course downfall was the inordinate number of ball marks on greens. Played another Vegas course two days earlier and it was the same way. Cannot believe people do not repair ball marks, especially on a nice course like this. Food at the turn was good and bag boys washed clubs and had them at the curb by the time I changed my shoes. Will be back. Glad the Raiders are not destroying this site with their move to Vegas. Would rate 5 stars if not for the range (I hit an easy 60-100 balls before each round to work out kinks) and the disappointment with the number of ball marks on some of the greens. Going back, just have to save a few nickels first.

Never played a Par-3 except at parent's RV timeshare so actually was expecting something similar. boy was I wrong. This is a fun course and it plays 12 holes. Lots of elevation changes and limited areas when you go off-line. Cost another $10 for the cart but since I had my full bag (played 8-SW only), opted for the cart instead of lugging it around. Great place to work on short game. Was not that busy, played on my own and the 4-some in front of me was not problem. Nobody behind me so I played a second ball a few times. Only downside of the course was the absurd amount of ball marks on greens. First of two Vegas courses I visited this week and the other, a resort club, was the same way. WHY DO PEOPLE NOT REPAIR THEIR BALL MARKS ON GREENS????? Had a lot of fun and cannot wait until I have the time to play one of the full courses. Range was decent but not great. Significantly elevated tee boxes so that hampered gauging proper distance, a little short for longer drivers, but as it was sand/rock, it was even difficult to exactly where you landed some times. $10 for a large bucket so price is comparable.

Not bad, but not great

GREAT day that started off fine. Played as a 2-some. Nice couple let us play through on 7 but when we hit 10, it was a constant wait. Actually paired up with the two in front of us but still horribly slow. Foursome of older gentlemen in front of us seemed to be in their own world when on the green. At the par 3 15th, we waited with the 2-some behind us as well they had everything backed up so badly. Marshall finally came around when we were on 18....about 8 holes too late.
Fairway grass was fine considering the season but leaves everywhere. Lost several balls on the fairway due to the leaves. Go OOB....forget it, just drop and keep going. Bunkers were HORRIBLE. Some were under construction, those that were not consisted of a quarter inch of packed sand over hardpacked mud. You could literally walk across the sand and not see any footprints. Ridiculous. On the other hand, the greens were really good, especially for December. Plugs for moved cup locations were done sloppily though as I hit two that dramatically altered my ball path.
Pretty basic course but much better than a regular muni course, and with some challenging areas. Have played Lakes also and will probably be back, but not on a weekend and not until next spring/summer so the leaves will not be an issue and they have time to fix the bunkers. Staff was nice as well.

Can be worth the trip

Mid-day mid-week round and I was by myself so pace was really fast. Even when I came up on a 4-some, they actually waited for me to finish the prior so I could play through.
I really like the course as it can be technical in spots and elevation can really come into play. Out in the open so wind has to be factored in most of the time as well.
The only complaints are about the greens. One is a seasonal thing as they were recently sanded so a bit rough and they played really fast. Just the time of season.
The other is I think Fred and Jeff went overboard with the varying terrain on some of the greens. Real easy to see your ball land on a green (actually pretty large overall) in regulation only to roll 60 feet away due to the crazy slope at many of them. Pars turn into bogeys or worse real easy due to the greens.
Overall, worth the trip (I actually am pretty close though) and they advertise discounts frequently so that is a bonus too.
