Scholl Canyon Golf & Tennis Club
Played On 12/19/2015Tricky and fun
The course is not long but requires deliberate shot making. Fall asleep at the wheel and watch your ball roll off the green and your score balloon before your eyes.
The back nine is particularly fun as it winds its way through the rocks and hills. Awesome views of LA and even the ocean on clear days are a nice feature of this course.
Rancho Park Golf Course
Played On 02/15/2015Solid but slow
The track is pretty good (especially for a municipal course) but you must be ok with the fact that the pace of play is notoriously very, very slow here. The 18 hole round took nearly six hours with a near half hour delay at the snack bar on the par three hole 12. Seems the works get so gummed up on that hole that every group hits the snack bar to keep up their morale.
As long as pace of play is not a factor regulating your enjoyment then you should thoroughly enjoy this course. If slow play takes away from the fun for you I feel it only fair that you have been warned in advance. Playing through will only cause you to miss holes and still be packed in tight anyway.
The Stadium Course at PGA WEST
Played On 12/19/2014For the skilled players
This course is for "golf nerds". If you are not a consisteny straight ball hitter you will find yourself endlessly floundering here. If you are a true golf nerd you will find what you are looking for here and must add this to your tract record.
I see many reviews pointing out the slow pace. I played the course at a fast pace and ended up passing three very out of place groups throughout the layout. I am not sure whether to conclude that the patrons and management alike are laxed at times (no one seemed to be angry and the three groups stopped to let us pass without is asking) or if this is something the management considers to be a serious problem that will be solved. if you come to the stadium you may encounter some very laxed vibes out here and you may end up having to pass some slow groups. Try not to let that ruin the experience of playing the legendary stadium course.
I will say once again you need to be able to hit straight here and place your shots. If you are not a true golf nerd you would likely have more fun at some of La Quinta, Palm Desert, Rancho Mirage and Palm Springs easier tracks- don't worry, they are all beautiful just mostly far easier.
Malibu Golf Club
Played On 07/27/2014A hidden gem
I enjoyed the inspiring layout and its demand of my ability to navigate.
If you come to play this summer keep the drought in mind as you will likely find the need to play winter conditions on the fairways. The course offers some reasonable deals on greens fees.
I found the Malibu club worthy of the trek and will likely return.
Westchester Golf Course
Played On 07/13/2014Gets the job done
Westchester gets an automatic adjustment up for rating because it provides a reasonably attainably decent golf experience within one of the most absurdly busy and expensive places in the world. LA has its muni courses but you more often than not must be prepared to fight the crowds and race the sunlight. Without the dough to settle into a country club, golf in LA is not impossible but tougher to enjoy than in less crowded cities. Westchester can be discouragingly crowded and slow at times but it has also yielded full rounds in 2 hours.
I'll give another plus for the fact that the layout and challenge beats your typical pitch n putt/executive course and the lights allow for some accommodation for the hectic schedules of us Angele. I can not get much golf elsewhere on week nights given my 6 pm quitting time.
If you like watching planes in action then you will like the backdrop. If you are annoyed by the sound of airplanes you will not want to play this course.
Overall westchester is a decent place to keep your game tuned up and have some fun. LA is better for having it.
Shadow Ridge Golf Club
Played On 07/05/2014Pin Seekers wanted
While the fairways graciously accept most decent drives (let us not mention foul drives) they require navigation through undulations around or over bunkers in order to set up a promising approach.
The slope of the greens require high trajectory and the undulations accuracy or else be ready to be on the money getting up and down or lagging. Beware of prospective three-putts.
I appreciate the variety and adornment of this course, the wonderful staff and the well kept fascilities. Thank you Nick Faldo, Shadow Ridge and Marriot for a fun round.
The Classic Club
Played On 07/04/2014Pristine
The classic club is a very fun test of your course management skills and, should you choose, will also require you to bring the heat on the majority of its holes.
The grass is so lush that you'll wonder whether you'd rather want to hit off of it or kick off your shoes and just stroll through it. The Palm Springs/Coachella area in general seems to have great courses with very pristine greens and fairways but the Classic Club is amongst the top tier caliber of golf courses. Very well done and thank you very much for the great golf and extremely accommodating and friendly service.
