Great parkland layout

Played several courses in the area, during a 10 day stay. The two courses here were on the top of my list to repeat in the future. Picking the right set of tees is essential to scoring well here. Played both the tips one day and from the whites another, when paired with another twosome. The tips will challenge your driver, and you will need it a lot. The fairways are fairly wide, but not excessively. Marginal tee shots will get you in the rough but a missed tee ball usually results in a lost ball. The hole layouts were interesting and varied. There were many memorable holes. The par threes are a good challenge form the tips, and good yardages for high handicaps, from the forward tees. I hit a variety of shots and clubs on the holes, so it never gets mundane. The Bermuda rough can hide the balls, in places where it is a little thicker, so keep your eye on where it lands! But it is not so deep that you cannot recover, with a well struck shot. The greens were very smooth and consistent from green to green. Only a couple had minor bad spots, but the pin positions easily avoided them. . You need to think your way around this course to score well. A little pricer than some other courses in the area, but not excessively, and what I would consider reasonable, for the caliber of the course.

Worth the drive!

Over a 10 day period, I played several courses in the Williamsburg area. This was my favorite. The conditions were superb and the layout fabulous. They have a great practice facility. The clubhouse is a smaller temporary structure, but a new one is currently being constructed. Moving onto the course; there were many memorable holes. I played both the back tees and the next to last tees. I really didn't look at the yardage, the day I played the back tees, until I got part way through and was thinking this is one bear of a course. It plays around 7500, from the tips! I played well, and felt pretty good walking away with a 90. I would only recommend the tips for a scratch golfer, or better. Even the next set up is very challenging for a single digit. You need to have your tee ball in shape, when playing this course. The fairways are fairly generous, but a bad tee shot will often find the trees and usually results in a lost ball. The rough was not too severe, and a well struck shot would allow you to recover or at least advance the ball substantially. The greens were smooth and I loved putting on them. They were fairly fast, but not so excessive that a higher handicap player would feel intimidated. This course is a little out of the way, if staying in Williamsburg, but is well worth the extra drive. It was less than 30 minutes from my hotel, though, so not too far. Because it is a little further out, I don't think it gets the traffic the local courses do. I had some longer waits on some of the other local courses, but moved around quickly, both days I played here. I would highly recommend you play here!

Nice layout

This is a very nice layout. Many interesting holes. Greens putted very nicely. Pace of play was good, until we hit the back nine, and we had to wait on the group if front. The only negative is the course doesn't seem to handle wet weather well. We played a few days after rain. The course was in good shape, however the bunkers were not maintained at all. A few had some puddles, but the ones that didn't were not manicured in any way. We either raked a place and placed out balls, or dropped outside the worst ones. I would probably give them a second chance, however I am two strikes and out, when there are other courses in the area that dealt with the same rain and their bunkers were in good condition.

Great layout!

This is one of three courses, at Ford's Colony. I played Black Heath and Marsh Hawk. The courses wind around housing, but it rarely comes into play, except for shots struck way off line. Both were great layouts, with many memorable holes. Both courses were well maintained and the greens were in great shape and putted well. The pace of play was great in the morning round (4 hrs), but afternoon was a little slower (4-1/2 hrs), however still on a good pace. This is a great value for the cost/versus the caliber of course. Hitting fairways was a premium, as the Bermuda rough tends to hide the balls well. At times you had to be right on top of them to find them. Keep your eye on where they land! This is one of my favorite facilities in the area. The staff is helpful and friendly The courses are challenging, interesting, and in great shape, and the dining areas are super, with great selections. I would highly recommend.

Must Play

The selection of courses is limited in this area. This is one I would definitely put on your list. Price is where I would expect it for a vacation destination and the caliber of course. It weaves through a development, but I only felt claustrophobic on a few holes. Even those were playable with an iron or hybrid off the tee. Even though it is in a development, it is not lacking for views, as the massive red rock formations were visible from practically everywhere. The conditions were great and the greens rolled well. I would rate the green speeds as fast, but not excessively so. Staff was friendly and accommodating. Our bags were loaded as soon as we arrived. We were given plenty of helpful direction and advice. Someone was there cleaning our clubs as we exited the last green. They would be a great model for other courses on customer service. Excellent job staff!

Beautiful views

Beautiful layout with great conditions. Set in a development, but only felt claustrophobic on a few holes. On those you can lay back with an iron or hybrid and still have a decent shot at the green. Pace of play was very good until the back nine, where we had to wait on the tees some, but not excessively. The views of the massive red rock outcroppings were a good distraction for my poor play that day. The price is about what I would expect for this level course, in a vacation destination Staff was friendly and professional. They got us loaded right away, gave us good information, got us out earlier than expected, when an opening was available, and were there cleaning our clubs as we walked off the last green. They should be a model for other courses on customer service. Excellent job staff!

Cold day in Houston

Booked through a Golfnow hot deal. Played in 40 degree weather, so course was wide open. For this time of year it was in good condition. Nice smooth greens. A few bare lies in the rough, but that is expected for winter golf. Played from tips and it was a good challenge. Course knowledge would be good, as some holes should be seen once, to see how it is best played. A few holes were difficult to decide on sight lines off the tee. This course was built on a landfill. My only caveat was that you would have thought that since the architect practically had a blank canvas, he would have thought of a routing that would have made walking the course easy. I would not recommend walking, as there are some long traverses from the green to the next tee. Visually a very nice course, with much diversity in the hole layouts. I would definitely play again.

Good Value

Played with my wife at 9am and again at 1:30. Pace of play was super in the morning, 3.75 hours., but afternoon was 4.5 hours. Front nine was really bad, 2 hours 40 min.. No marshal seen in afternoon. Course is a great course for the money. Conditions were very good and greens were fairly fast and true. I played back and it was a good challenge. I enjoyed it, even though I had my worst round in years. Not the golf course's fault. lol. Women's tees were fair and wife enjoyed it. She is a little above beginner level. Clubhouse looks like it just underwent a renovation. I had a fish sandwich that was excellent! Staff was friendly and helpful. Only negative was the slow play in the afternoon. Would definitely return. scale of 1-10, course difficulty-7, course maint. -8, staff 9, pace of play 6, facilities-8.
