Westin Rancho Mirage Golf Resort & Spa - Pete Dye Resort Course
Played On 09/06/2016Fun Pete Dye course!
This is the quintessential Dye design - Deep swails and bunkers, water features lined with railroad ties, and undulating greens. Some people don't care for Dye's extreme mounding and bunkering but I love it! It's what makes it interesting, different, and challenging. Although this course is not very long and certainly far from his more difficult creations, it still has some teeth and is not your average "resort" course. I would recommend this course for any skilled golfer that enjoys a challenge. Not for beginners or high handicappers!

This course probably has the best par 3's, from a challenge and variety standpoint, of any public access course in the valley (my fav's anyway)!
If you haven't played Shadow Hills South before you should give it a shot. The par 3 North course, soon to include a few par 4's from what I hear, is excellent with beautiful desert landscaping and water features!
I have played the South course numerous times and have always enjoyed it. The greens have come back well from the aerification of last month, tees were in great shape but fairways were a little spotty. This is a testament as to what happens when a winter overseeded course has high cart traffic on clay soil. The transition in the summer back to its bermuda grass base is challenging. The fairway of #1 looks the worst but it does get better. I just played preferred lies if my ball ended up on a bare spot in a fairway. That being what it is, the course is still a good track.
Finally, Byron in the golf shop was a wonderful ambassador and host - down-to-earth, gracious and accommodating, and explained directions and food & bev options. Thank you Byron!

Fun course, well designed for the space available - lots of condo's! Good mix of holes with lots of water features. Not long but has personality and challenge. Greens were very slow but very healthy and the course was very lush and green. Will definately play again!
Escena Golf Club

Nice course and loved the greens! Some bare patches due to high winter traffic and standard fall overseeding practices, just like most every public course in the desert, but for the most part it was in great shape. Tees, fairways and greens were like carpets! Fun to play!

Fun course that was a moderate challenge. The course was maintained fairly well and very green with lots of trees. Greens were generously large, most with fun undulating slopes and rolled at a nice pace. The bunkering on the course was just right, a couple on just about every hole, to not only frame the hole but to give the course challenge, beauty, and add depth perception.
I liked the start of the course as it let you warm up a bit with a couple of short par 4's then a par five. None of the holes were extremely demanding but provided enough challenge to always keep your interest. Overall a nice test that won't beat you up!
