Dependably enjoyable

As usual, course was in terrific shape, particularly the greens. Not a tough layout, but very pretty, with enough challenge to keep a once-a-week golfer such as myself interested. Too bad this course become unaffordable during "the season"- enjoy it now, while prices are very reasonable! Excellent practice area.

New management, new problems

Have played this facility for over 20 years, through various managements. Current management seems intent on cutting costs at expense of service. When I arrived I checked in and asked for a small bucket of balls to warm up. They had only one size- 60 balls for $8. Way too big for me. I asked for a smaller size. Desk attendant says she could remove some golfballs if it was too much for me, but that wouldn't change the price. Smart aleck! I went to get my cart and none were immediately available. Have never had this experience at any other course in the valley! Obviously they do not have enough carts to go around. I was told that I could get a cart in 5 minutes, as soon as foursome on 18th was through. So, I was going to be given a cart which had not been cleaned, and might run out of juice? The cart is essential to get to the driving range, but I was so angry I walked, carrying my bag and the practice balls. There is one starter, at the driving range, but he is miles from the first tee of the course we started on, Indian. It would be better off if they converted him to a marshal and let him rid around the course, as pace of play was slooowwwww! Course condition was only fair, some of the greens were lumpy.
Restaurant OK, and I can't dump on the employees much, they can only work with what management gives them. I give the new management maybe a year before they fade into the distance and a new group takes over. Service, service, service, there are too many other nice courses in the desert I can play I will not be back here for awhile.

Old reliable

Have played this course for twenty years, and it continues to deliver one of the best values in the Coachella Valley: $55 after $12:30, including free lunch. Course is in fine shape, offering some challenge, but not terrifying. A few holes require carry over water and make you think twice about the lay-up!
Food in the restaurant is top-notch and pace of play on a Friday afternoon was great;- our foursome finished in 3.5 hours, even though no marshals were present. Highly recommended for a fun time.

Late start, couldn't finich

New system this season: a starter at the driving range. However, our tee time was delayed by 20 minutes for reasons not explained. Few things aggravate me more than being delayed off the tee: I show up on time, why can't the course be on time as well? Course was in good shape, but pace of play was on the slow side: 4 hours and 40 minutes. As a result, the 12:16 tee time, which should have allowed us to finish, became 12:36, so we could not play the 18th hole. At $49, this course sports one of the lowest green fees around, but I will not return until I hear better news about starting times, and they get marshals on the course to speed things up. I have played here for 20 years, very disappointing!

Please disregard this review. I wrote if for Indian Palms but Golfnow will not let me remove it, even though it was clearly a mistake!

Great summer golf

Earlier this year I reviewed this course and negatively commented on abject slow play conditions. My most recent visit shows this condition has been corrected, albeit perhaps by light summer play. Whatever the reason, it was a great session of golf, and I am glad to see this venerable old course exhibiting its many attractions. The condition of the course is excellent; fairways are lush and the greens are smooth and true. Wide-open fairways cater to the erratic driver, but this course has some challenging holes for the straight hitter. Warm-up facilities are excellent and located close to the clubhouse. the downstairs pro shop is still closed and under reconstruction after the flood from last September's storm, but should be ready to go before too long. The food in the upstairs restaurant is very tasty, and there are often 2 on 2 lunch specials accompanying the golf reservation. Try this course, I believe you will enjoy your experience,

WONDERFUL COURSE, SLOW PLAY

I haven't played this course in over ten years, since the major remodel. The course has gorgeous mountain views. It was in immaculate condition, with sleek fairways and smooth, dependable, moderately fast greens. The driving range points east, which makes it almost impossible to watch the flight of your ball in the morning.
My primary beef here was pace of play. We teed off at 7:50 AM and were promised a fast round, with light play. It ended up taking 4.5 hours, and it was really hot (over 100 degrees) when we got off the course. The marshals appeared ineffectual in improving the pace of play. This might be acceptable pace of play during the season, but during the hot weather it is torture.

Old gold

Step out onto this course and you travel instantly back to the 1950's, when courses were short, practice ranges were narrow, and clubhouses did not have restaurants. That's not a criticism; just an observation. In fact, I suspect you will really enjoy this course if you are not looking for Himalayan challenges, but rather a pleasant afternoon with friends on a well-maintained golf course with lovely mountain views. The greens were lovely, and very slick on downhill putts. There are few serious hazards, just a little water here and there, and some not very threatening bunkers. That doesn't mean the course offers no challenges; hit it wide of the fairway and your advance will often be blocked by towering palm trees which border the short grass. The driving range accommodates only about eight golfers at a time, and at busy periods there is a waiting line. The staff was very accommodating and helped resolve an error in our booking. All in all, we really enjoyed our day and expect to return at some point in the not too distant future.

Disappointed

It pains me to write this review, as I have favorably reviewed this course in the past. My bad experience today began with waiting 5 minutes for the cart assigner after I checked in, to receive a cart. He never showed, and time was running short, so I went off to the driving range to warm up. Fortunately one of the garage employees was able to secure me a cart, thank you.

When I arrived at my appointed time at the first tee, no starter was present. Out in the fairway, playing very slowly, was the foursome two slots ahead of me; on the tee was the foursome one slot ahead of me. So, I was delayed ten minutes teeing off. Sit around and twiddle your thumbs time.

I played nine holes with assigned partners from Canada, who were very nice people. WE noticed that some of the tee boxes were in awful condition, with chewed up grass. I quite after 9 and half holes and 2 and a half hours, because I refuse to play a 5-hour round.

When I drove by the foursome in front of us, there was a full hole open in front of them. Ditto for the foursome in front of them. The course was making no effort to speed up play.

It's been tough on the management, as their club house was flooded in the September storm, and it will be months before they get back to normal. But they should be making a special effort in other areas to keep loyal customers happy. Slow play is poison! I won't be back until I hear better news from this course.

First review after the deluge

I see I am writing the first review of this course, one of my favorites, since the early September rainstorm which flooded the clubhouse and led to closing of the facility. It is good to see Woodhaven up and running again, and I was curious how it survived the storm. The clubhouse is still closed, and they have opened a small pro shop on the top level to handle golfers. I wasn't aware of that and traipsed around the building several times before someone pointed me in the right direction. You should know that the golf carts are also checked out in the parking lot, which is actually more convenient than it was before. I was one of the earliest golfers of the day and had the driving range to myself. The warm-up facilities are excellent, including the chipping and putting greens. Greens are still very slow compared to normal, but this is to be expected to soon after re-seeding. The staff is cheery and helpful despite the temporary adverse conditions of a clubhouse under remodel. The course itself was in excellent shape, save for a few tee boxes which hadn't yet fully grown in and were very thin on grass. I was afraid I would damage them. You will have to give you putts and extra hard rap, and if you are putting uphill you may need more club than a putter! I was paired with a pleasant gentleman from Oregon and we had a great time- we flew through the first 15 holes in less than three hours, until we backed up against some foursomes which had teed off earlier in the morning. All in all, not much to complain about here, and a lot to like. I am looking forward to the renovated pro shop, although I don't know when that work will be completed.

Watch that Pace of Play

Few things upset me more than being stuck behind a slow foursome. Today it took us 4 hours to complete 14 holes and I flat quite. Looked as if it was going to be a 5-hour round. When I drove by the foursome in front of us, they were a full hole and a half behind the folks in front of them. Where's the marshal? On the positive side, this is a course with generous fairways and generally good conditions, with lovely mountain views.. On the second nine they are remodeling several holes and it is not pretty. Several of the regular teeboxes were not ready and they installed temporary forward tees. The free breakfast egg and muffin sandwich was very good. Overall, I would wait until they solve their pace of play problems and complete construction to try playing this course again.

Caveats

I have played at this golf facility many times in the past and always enjoyed myself. Consists of three nine-hole course, one of which is closed for overseeding. Enjoyed myself as well this time, particularly as there are so few courses open in October at the east end of the Coachella Valley! I two have two comments: one, we played Wed morning and the practice range was closed for maintenance. Two, one of the nines we played, Royal, was roped off from start to finish. This considerably slowed the pace of play. Neither item was mentioned at the time of my reservation. All in all, I would still return here, as there are many positives, and I am grateful to have a place to play in October for reasonable cost.

A Piece on "The Rock"

As a La Quinta resident, I have played Silverrock many times. Despite the ongoing construction to move the aqueduct, the course is still in wonderful condition and a treat for the senses. Of course, with only nine holes open, one must play those nine holes twice to get in a full round. But we had fun trying to outdo our front nine on the back nine.
The big beef I have with the course is that it is classic "target golf". Almost every hole is fronted by bunkers or water. On many holes, one can not play a Scottish-type "run-up" shot to get on the green. That's probably because the course was designed for play by the pros, but since they don't play here any more thought might be given to a redesign to lighten up on the level of difficulty.
We (senior golfers) compensated by playing from the green tees, which are forward of the white tees. This made a very significant difference in the level of difficulty, and in our enjoyment of the course. If, like us, you are not comfortable with 170-yard (or longer) carries over water or acres of sand, give those tees, or even the red tees, a try. The course doesn't know you're moving up, and no one else really cares either!

Shady business, thank goodness

I played with two friends, teeing off at 7:30 to beat the heat. We played around in 3:45 (we were paired with a congenial fourth), which got us off just as it was becoming a bit uncomfortable. This is a good course to play during the summer, plenty of shady trees (to hit into or park under). We all really like this course, it is of medium length difficulty and provides opportunities for low scores if you are hitting accurately. Condition was generally excellent, although they appear to be in danger of losing a few of the greens, which were particularly slick on downhill putts. Not many terrifying obstacles on this course, just a venue for fun and camaraderie. I hit a ball long and left on #9, by the clubhouse. On my way driving out I found it in the middle of the parking lot! One of the best values in the Coachella Valley.

A fun day on the links

I went out with two golfing buddies. We hadn't played this course in years, It was perfect golf weather' 75 degrees, sunny, light breezes. The warm-up facility is excellent; strangely, we had it all to ourselves. We began our round a few minutes early; the desert crowds are definitely thinning out as we move into May!
The course was a lot of fun to play. No terrifying hazards, a minimum of water, and not bunkers blocking shots to the greens, one could run them up the apron. The course was in very nice condition everywhere. The views of the mountains are stunning, and one gets treated to the sight of an airliner landing occasionally at Palm Springs International (no significant noise, though). We finished in less than 3.5 hours, even though we felt the threesome ahead of us could have played faster! Lunch at the restaurant was also tasty, served in a pleasant setting with those ever-present mountain views. Staff was cordial and helpful. We will be back to play again soon!
