Los Lagos at Costa Mesa Golf & Country Club
Played On 08/18/20201st time back since COVID
Course conditions were pretty darn near perfect. Not sure what they've done recently to improve the receptivity of the greens, but they were great. The 30 day+ closure of the course for the onset of the pandemic, gave the course time to recover. Pin placements accessible and conditions for scoring was ideal. Pace of play was 4 hours. All practice areas are open with social distancing guidelines in place. Payment was easy and touch free. Staff made the course feel safe.

Played this wonderful course 2 times within 2 weeks and I heard lots about this course over the years. Played the Babe 15 years ago, but always wanted to give this course a try. US open qualifier course and I can see why. Visually deceptive, long and greens can be challenging. They had the tees up 30 yards, which allowed me to have many scoring clubs into the greens. Bunkers were firm sand and the rough cut low. Fairways seemed spongy.

I played as a guest of a member and have nothing but great things to say about this course. Lucky to have played, hope to be invited back. Championship layout, greens roll beautifully. Rough was surprisingly sticky even though is was cut relatively short. Wind can make the course play much longer than what the card shows. Practice facility is top notch. Food was great!

Had a great time playing this challenging but fair track. The rough and fairways seem to be kikuyu grass, which is an awesome choice of turf grass for this hilly terrain and elevation changes. It helps stop the ball and keep the ball from rolling all over the course. Bunkers appear to be sod, so you'll need a low bounce SW to play a splash shot. Pace of play for a weekday was perfect. I'm sure the weekends, things can get backed up. Staff was friendly. Easy check in and stress free tee off. Only concern is the cleanliness of the golf cart, in this time of COVID. I usually walk, but with the hilly terrain and extreme elevation changes, walking is not an option for me. The greens appear to be poa annua and were rolling just fine for midday. The course was fun because of low wind conditions. I got to use all my clubs. Lots of hybrids off the white tees, but still used Driver 9 times. I will definitely be back.

First time playing here in over a year within the covid-19 pandemic. The booking software was different to accommodate prepaid tee times at walker rates. I'm a walker, so I was able to simply head up to the tee box straight from my car., when I arrived for my 11am tee time. If you need a cart, simply head into the pro shop to purchase a cart. Right now, only single rider carts and carts seem to be limited. I would encourage you to walk.
The pace of play is 4 hours, thx to the pandemic...course is in great shape and greens are rolling just fine.
All practice greens and sand/pitching areas are closed. Range is open with social distancing in place.
Staff was friendly and I felt safe on this course during my round. Outside dining looked like it was open for business and the snack bar was open too, but I've been bringing all my own snacks and drinks. No trash cans on the course so please refrain from littering and take your trash home with you.
Masks required. Please wear them.

First time back here since late February. The booking software was different, but didn't offer prepaid tee times. Paid in the pro shop. Cashiers were behind clear barriers and the POS was contact less.
Pace of play was a 4 hour pace...thx to the pandemic. Course is in the same condition that it always seems to be. Greens are rolling just fine, but fairways have the typical drainage issues or dried out areas.
Staff was friendly and I felt safe out there on the course. No trash cans on the course so please take your trash with you. Mask are required. Please wear them. Snack bar seemed open, but I bring all my own snacks and drinks.

I play here regularly, and do so because of the greens. Challenging and roll as true as you can get for a public course in OC.
Course has some drainage problems, probably because the designer attempted to trick out the course too much. Not all greens break towards the water.
Course layout fits great to my game. Holes #9 & #16 are the longest holes on the course, but it's all good because the play down wind. Bombs Away!
Ambassadors on the course to check play. They should advise all players to wave up on the Par 3's to help with the pace a little bit.

Played On 08/19/2017Greens still need work
I played this course with a old friend of mine. I haven't played on this course in over 15 years, back when I was a Junior Member of the Men's Club.
They have definitely put some work on the course. Fairways are in better shape. My favorite change was turning the 9th hole into a Par 4. The hole typically plays into the wind. So, attempting to carry your Driver 250 yds over sand traps with a backstop for a green, is a risk/reward opportunity. I wish the would extend the fairway out to the right, as a bail out spot for those attempting to go for the green.
#17 played all the way back needs to be a Par 4 or otherwise, shortened. It plays into the wind.
More practicing options with pitching areas and a sand practice area. Awesome.
Greens are still very bumpy and slow. Mgmt needs to put more of the money into better rolling greens. They call them "green fees" for a reason!

Played On 06/07/2017Great course layout
Love the layout when I play here.
Just wish the grounds crew is better with the pin placements. Some days they're too close to the edge the greens, so your approach shot may not hold. You can play the approach to the fat part of the green, but run the risk of your putt rolling off the green. #10 front pin placement seem to come to mind and #13 front pin placement.
Pace is on the poor side, but that's probably due to the back-to-back par 5s right off the bat and the 15 handicapper thinking he can reach these greens in 2. Not the courses fault. Just hit a Driver, 7 iron and move on.
Course needs more Marshals around to check pace, and to require everyone to wave up on Par 3's, hole numbers 4 & 7. That should help improve the pace of play.
However, the weekend golfer shouldn't expect to complete a round in less than 5 1/2 hours. 5-5 1/2 hours have become the standard nowadays for weekends.

I played this course pre El Nino 1996 and post El Nino 1996. I revisited this course for the first time in over 15 years. Back then, the front 9, is now the back and vice versa. I enjoyed playing the old back 9, old #10 (Now the first hole), because NOW the old #1 Par 4 460 hole now #10 plays downwind. Gives the average player some help on the long par 4.
I also enjoyed the rebuilds on hole #13 and on #14. Pre El Nino 1996 those two holes had 2 of the most gnarliest greens you would ever putt. However the El Nino flooded those holes and that portion of the course never recovered.
Great course! Great Layout! Always enjoy playing here. Good food and amenities. Practice facilities are great too.
Will be back soon.
