You'll like this course

Tee boxes are all well maintained. Fairways are closely cut and fairly firm. The rough is fairly penal, as is most bermuda rough around the south due to the serious growing that bermuda did during summer months. You need to find the short grass off the tee to have a go at most pins, otherwise you'll be grinding hard even for your bogie. Greens are good to great, running at between a 10 or 11 on stimp. The practice putting green is super fast and matches the speeds you'll see on the course. They have a very large short game practice are with lots of bunkers, rough short grass to hit onto. The short game are contains two greens. I would recommend this course to anyone (that will put up with driving this far).

If you have options to play somewhere else, go there....

I have wanted to play Providence for at least 10 months since I knew they had Champions Bermuda greens. However, I just never had the interest in driving that far. Well today I booked the round and here's my review.

The place is just dirty - that's the feeling. Parking lot, side walks, walk ways, stair case to club house - all dirty, very dirty. Unkept and dirty. The young fellow in the club house was friendly. I walked in to get something to eat 'cause I was hungry. They had no menu anywhere, but just a bunch of snacks, candy and chips. I grabbed $5 worth of crackers and candy, paid up and was out the door. The girl behind the counter was nice and friendly.

Got to the cart. Gas powered and dirty... Floor of cart looked like had never been washed. Who cares, I'm here for golf. Go to putting green - green was running perhaps 10 on stimp. Good. Green was true and smooth. Good. I'm ready... I play Gold/Tips - total yardage around 6,500yds so this is going to be a birdie fest - I'm a +2.7...

I get to first tee... short par 5 of 510yds. Tee box was fair. Looked down fairway. Hole was fair. No trouble anywhere - it's bombs away. Birdie. Next hole, short par 4 of around 420yds. Tee box was poorly maintained, again no trouble anywhere. Bomb it down middle, PW in to 4'. Birdie. Next hole Par 3 of 168yds. 8iron to 10', par. Next hole... same ol' same ol'. I finish the day with 8 birdies and 2 bogeys for a very easy 6 under 66.

Why aren't I excited? Most people would be thrilled with that round. Well, the cart paths were just awful. My back got more jarring than a pickle factory. The fairways were nearly as bad to drive on. The cart bounced up and down violently all day and the course beat me up in that way. There were no challenging holes at all.. The #1 handicap was a short par 4 - driver, gap wedge. Boring...

The average schmoe might enjoy shooting a round lower than he/she is used to, but for the advanced golfer looking at a challenging day of target golf, this is not the place. The greens were the best part of the day for sure, but I do not think I will return. Just not memorable for the reasons I would like.

Sorry Providence... For my money, if you want to enjoy champions bermuda greens and play some moderately challenging golf I'd go to ashton hills or cherokee run.

Good to work on your iron game

I play here at least once a week. It's a good place to go to really see the state of your game. The longest holes are 180-190yds. The shortest are 110yds. I bring my sand, gap and pitching wedges. I bring my 9, 8, 7, 6 irons. I do bring a putter, but I don't like to putt here... I will from time to time, but the greens are not true AT ALL. They have no "technology" to roll/compress the surface of the greens so your ball will bounce and jitter all over the place. And, when you chip/pitch, your ball will not react the way it will when you play firm/fast greens. Therefore, I don't typically like to pitch or chip here.

The greens are mostly small to moderately small. So, this is good for target practice. I also like to come here to work on my yardages and gaps.

I'm a better overall player on other courses because I come here to hit iron shots. For example, I played all 18 holes in 1hr 10minutes. I hit 18 tee shots all with very specific targets. You can't do this at a driving range...

I recommend coming here.

Ok, but not a favorite.

I played here a few times in 2009 or thereabouts, so this is the first time back in years. There's not much I can write honestly. It was just not very memorable. Several very quirky holes, and only one maybe two "good" holes. #11 is a long par 3 - that's a good hole. And there's a 566yd par 5 that I think is #15 - that's a good hole. I'd say if you're close by, then fine - play here. But if you can drive a little bit, there are better options.

When I arrived, the pro shop people were very nice and friendly. The carts are motorized, not battery powered - seemed new. The tee boxes are good. The greens were in good shape, but pretty slow... Fairways were good. Nothing really special.

Before my round, I went to putt a little, and there was a tattooed 20 something on the range hitting balls in cargo shorts and a tank top - yup - a tank top. That's what you're looking at folks. If your club is letting ne'er-do-wells onto the grounds and they are not enforcing the etiquette of the sport, you know it's not going the way they want, and that's a sign...

Then there's the smell of raw sewage. Raw sewage? Yup! I asked a fellow I was scheduled to play with (who happened to live in the neighborhood) "is it just me, or do you smell poo?" he said "there's a sewage treatment pond right there" and he pointed to a spot to the right of the #10 tee box. It was ripe, let me tell you.

Overall, a good course layout but not a favorite because...

First, I paid for a full foursome as a "treat." I don't normally do that, but these guys deserved it...

Because it was a Golfnow hotdeal round, I felt like the desk clerk was fairly rude to me and "my guests." He was clearly a tad bit dismissive. I have advice for guys like this... "Your business manager wants to get public play, so they post on Golfnow. People buy it, deal with it and be happy and welcome people to your golf course - we have options in terms of courses to play."

The day prior I had played in Conyers. That course was much better in terms of layout, greens, etc., and the price was less than half...

But, Manor is a good course with true greens, nice tee boxes, good mixture of holes, etc., The cart girl was extremely friendly and we bought drinks (oh yeah).

I will play here more, but will not go out of my way simply because of how the proshop staff treated us at check-in. Just leaves a bad feeling about the overall experience.

One of the best courses in Georgia. Yeah baby, very yeah!!

I have lucked out recently by choosing fantastic golf courses that I have never played. About a month ago I was playing with a fellow who mentioned he normally plays Cherokee Run and how it required great skill to get around on that course. Ok, that's like telling a cat there's a mouse in the next room - I knew I had to play it. He said nothing about the condition of the place.

Ok, so I drive there and the parking lot is nearly empty... I'm thinking this is a bad sign. I go into the club house and there is a bar (good), a banquet room (good) and a well stocked pro shop (good). I sign in, get my cart, load it up and head to the putting green. Champions Bermuda (good), at least 11, maybe 12 on the stimp (fantastic).

First hole - fantastic tee box (good). Middle of fairway - pristine - looks like Emerald Zoysia, certainly not fescue and not Bermuda (fantastic). For my approach I've got 131yds to raised green and a front left pin where the green runs away left to right. I had a super stiff wind in my face. Knowing I needed extra club, going at the flag was not an option. Knowing the green allowed me to hit extra club if I take my approach more to the right was a great option. I realized this course architect was good. Ok, it's an Arnold Palmer design (fantastic).

I finished the round of golf and all thru it I was completely blown away that this course is here and available to play - it is a real gem. There was only one bad hole on the entire layout - Hole #12. It's a short Par 5, but there's a giant pine tree fronting the green. From where my drive came to rest I had 230 to the center of the green. And I was on the left side of the fairway - a great angle if you look at the hole design. For me to take on the green required to hit a huge carving three wood, with at least 30-40yds of cut. Not anything I'm afraid of, but 99.9995% of players do not have that shot. Later, I viewed the hole design, and there is nothing on the original layout that shows that tree. Therefore, clearly it was a decision by a bone head to leave it there. If they removed that tree, this would be one of the greatest 18 hole golf courses in Georgia...

On the website there's a quote, which reads "If you think anything of Augusta and what you've seen over the years... I certainly think Cherokee Run is one of the great golf courses in the world." - Arnold Palmer

I believe it! I've played all over - some of the finest courses in the country including Harbour Town (RBC Heritage), TPC Sawgrass, Atlanta Athletic Club (2011 PGA Championship), etc., and this is easily right up there as a fantastic layout that will test your mind, your swing and your putting.

I had four birdies, some wonderful par saves and two bogeys. You'd best be putting really good, because these greens are fast and you CANNOT be above the hole or on the opposite side otherwise you're going to three [or four] jack.

One of the best courses [public or private] in Georgia... I've not played Augusta National, but have played just about all the greats this state has to offer. I think Arnie has done it about as good as he could have with Cherokee Run.

An aside...
Later that day I was talking with a friend. I told him I played Cherokee Run. He said he had played it many years ago and didn't come back, saying the condition was terrible. He mentioned it was either owned or run by a Koren who didn't spend a penny on it. He was aghast at my description of the place, so clearly something has happened since he played and now. Therefore, if you have played in the past and it was not well kept, you've gotta go back. Literally, there was nothing about the course that was not near perfect. I didn't even mention the cart paths... They were perfect - looked like the concrete was just put down yesterday - no "surprise back jarring" on this course.

I enjoyed this course...

After receiving a GREAT offer on an 18 hole round, I reluctantly made the purchase without knowing anything about the course, and only knowing I'd be driving 60 miles round trip. The driving range leaves a lot to be desired, and the "pro shop" was just odd. But once my tee time arrived and I saw the first hole I was excited. Beautiful first golf hole. The green(s) were just amazing. Lots of speed and plenty of undulation. The rest of the course did not upset, and I thoroughly enjoyed my round. There were a couple of holes which had "Death" areas that were not well marked, that unless you had local knowledge, so if your tee shot went there, you were dead! Honestly, I wish golf courses would hand new customers a course "map" which might go hole to hole and say "On this tee shot you want to avoid left because there's a ravine that you cannot escape from."

Anywho, I do plan to return to this course and look forward to it eagerly. In fact, I have mentioned to a couple of my golfing buddies that we should go play there...

If you like golf, then this is a review you'll want to see...

The drive to get here is awful.. The course is in the middle of nowhere, and I mean nowhere... Deliverance music and deliverance people all around - really make sure your car is in good condition.

Ok, back to golf. From the first tee to the 18th green, this place is a treat. The tee boxes are in good condition. The fairways are about as good as they get, anywhere. The greens are relatively good, having been aerated a couple of weeks ago.

All in all, this course is a fabulous place to play from any tee box. I play the tippy tips and there was one hole that stretched me out... A 470 or 480yd par 4 uphill. Me thinks it was hole #15 or so. I hit a monster of a tee shot to the middle of the fairway and had long iron remaining to a right to left green. Just a beauty of a hole. Saw a wild turkey up at the green.

Do yourself a favor and go play here. You won't be disappointed.

Do Not Waste Your Time!!!

Over the past few years, I have played Lanier Golf Club a hundred times or more. I've always paid the going rate of $35. So, I've paid these people $3,500 to play their course. About a year ago when they reopened with greens they said "were great" I paid full rate and the greens were literally sand pits. They were awful, the experience was awful and the staff was rude!!!

Today, I called and talked to a lady. I said "I haven't played there in a year, would be willing to try and if I like I'd post a positive review. I've played there tons, always at the retail price and have never asked for a refund, although I deserved one last time." She said, and I've heard this before "Oh, I hear the greens are great!" Then she said "Sir, I'm tired of hearing that word [awful]. What is your question?"

Talk about arrogant, dismissive staff!!! I will not go to this course. I would recommend people stay away from this place. There are too many good courses with people that realize theirs is a retail business. You can't treat customers like this and stay open!!

MY RECOMMENDATION? STAY AWAY FROM LANIER GOLF CLUB!

One of the Best you'll find - old school style

Stonemont (not Lakemont) is one of the best "driving" golf courses you'll find in metro Atlanta, especially from the back tees. You have to be in complete control of your tee ball to score on this course. The course has been in existence since late 60s or early 70s so the trees left by the designer are big and mature. This means tree lined fairways - yup - tree lined fairways, and to me this is why you want to play here; Straight long par4 holes that require you to hit controllable drives that find the fairway!!! A great test of golf.

Now, if you don't find the fairway, for the most part, your ball will have to be played around trees in order to find the green, or you'll have to take your medicine and punch out. But if you find all 14 fairways, your job is not over - the greens are fast and pretty undulating. You have to be on your toes to get down in two if you're GIR, and good luck with birdies here, because scoring requires fantastic iron shots!

Overall, this course is one of my favorites!!!

Course is a good value with good personality

There are quite a number of holes here that provide a lot of interest. The greens are fast and in good condition. If you hit a long ball, there are some great risk reward holes, like #1 and #18 - both longish par 5s. To reach each requires your best shot (when does it not?) and you'll want to shape a right to lefter. From 2 to 17, there is a lot of fun out there.

If you want to drive a little out of your way (it's up I-85 near Chateau Elan), Reunion is a great value.

You'll want to play Branson!!

If you're in Branson, MO, you need to play here. Everything about the golf course was nothing but spectacular. In fact, seldom do I buy a golf hat, except when I truly had an enjoyable and memorable golf experience (tee boxes, fairways, greens, etc.,). I did buy a golf hat here and bet you would too. A great golf course!

Murder Rock is a lot of fun!

From the history, to the club house to the beautiful views and elevation changes, this was a treat. I thoroughly enjoyed my golf outing at murder rock, although the story of the name is a bit gruesome. In fact, the rock is on the course and when you find it you'll find a bit of eery intrigue.
