Streamsong Resort - Red Course
Played On 12/19/2023Tremendous experience
I had the opportunity to play the Red Course in December, my first time at Streamsong and one of my few encounters with resort golf. It was an incredible time and definitely worth the money. In addition to a challenging course with scenic views you don't get in Florida, the staff could not have been friendlier and more accomodating. Playing alongside my cousin, we particularly enjoyed our caddie, Michael Bradley. Yep, the four-time PGA Tour winner. He could not have been more gracious and personable, adding to a very memorable occasion.
St. Andrews Links - Old Course
Played On 07/11/2016Greatest course in the world
This was my second time playing the Old Course, and the first since 2010. I can't say enough about it. There are no ocean views and the course is always full. But it's the Old Course and it doesn't disappoint.
The majority of the holes are memorable because you're seen history made on them before. There is nothing like that first tee shot, with people coming up 18 and some walking through the middle of the fairway. A tee box full of players and caddies and a crowd gathered to watch.
The key is to keep it left at all costs and you better have control of your lag putting on the double greens.
I would rather play this course a third time than almost any other course a first time.
The North Berwick Golf Club
Played On 07/10/2016What a treat
This is a must-play if you are in this area. If you're not, you should make the trip. I usually don't remember much about individual holes or stretches, but a few on this course stuck out.
The first 12 holes are good. The last six are tremendous. The 13th has a rock wall in front of the green that would seem contrived at an American course but feels classic here. There are a number of blind shots and a forecaddie would be a great benefit. But it helped to be playing with some guys who had been here before.
The views and the originality of the holes make the round worthwhile, and it's cool to begin and end in the middle of the town.
Great experience.
The Renaissance Club
Played On 07/09/2016Great surprise in Scotland
The second of a four-course Scottish trip, this was the venue I had never heard of and was supposed to be something to do in the morning before we played North Berwick. It turned out to be a highlight. The clubhouse was immaculate and our forecaddie was tremendous. He was so good that a person in our group gave him a box of ProV1's as a gift.
The rough was unusually high and the greens were overly sloped. But it was a nice layout and, again, our forecaddie helped make the experience even more pleasurable with his ability to find even the most offline shot.
Playing 18 here had me geared up for the second 18 that day. Look forward to returning some day.
Gullane Golf Club - No. 1
Played On 07/09/2016First course in Scotland in a while
This was my first time playing Gullane No. 1 and the first time I had played in Scotland in six years. The experience was great. The staff was extremely friendly and there was never an issue with pace of play. It was fun to walk again, the first time I've done that in recent memory. The course was in great shape. The first hole was smooth sailing, but the narrow, uphill second taught me the importance of keeping my ball in play. The elevation changes were very impressive and you could see Muirfield at some of the peaks. The 17th hole was particularly memorable as it was straight downhill and just begging me to hit a driver as hard as I could, which is what I did. I think I might have hurt myself. But it was fun walk and a good game.
Kings Ridge Golf Club - Kings Course
Played On 01/19/2014Good option
This course is good if you're in the Clermont area. Slightly shorter than neighboring Legends, it's still a good test. Does get backed up at times and have been there twice now when they have run out of golf carts. It's also quite a trek to the practice area when you don't have a cart and want to kill time waiting on your delayed start. Overall, a good track and inexpensive.
Legends Golf & Country Club
Played On 12/18/2013Best value course
I have played this venue a handful of times and, all things considered, it's my go-to course. It's in close proximity to my home, rates are very reasonable, and the layout is a solid test but not too long nor overly difficult. The food is good; staff very accommodating.
Sanctuary Ridge Golf Club
Played On 11/14/2013Got in 11 holes
Got washed out the day I played, but not the clubs fault. I'd rank the course behind Legends and Kings Ridge, in that order, in the Clermont area. Too much elevation and if you get sideways, it can be dangerous driving along those mounds. Good price, though, and a decent change up from Legends and Kings Ridge.
