About
Hello! I love to play and enjoy every aspect of a golf course. My favorite courses are heavily wooded, quiet, have white sand bunkers and a solid pace of play. I play a few country clubs now and again so I like to compare public courses to private ones.
I live in Minnesota and try to play as many of our courses as possible.

Giants Ridge Golf & Ski Resort - Legend Course
Played On 08/19/2017My favorite Minnesota course
This course is wonderful. It was in perfect condition and the greens were rolling fast at 8AM. The staff was friendly, they accommodated our request of playing as a twosome. The driving range was missing balls but they arrived within 15 minutes of us stepping up. The tee boxes were incredible, perfect views and almost every hole was worthy of some extra time to look around. We played both the Legend and the Quarry, and I liked the Legend more. I loved the layout, although I was swinging driver, wedge on almost every hole. Not a lot of shot variety.
Rush Creek Golf Club
Played On 08/16/2017Love it
Great conditions, nice clubhouse and restaurant, good views and a challenging course. A recipe for good things. Par 3's are beautiful and a good test. Maple Grove is not Minneapolis but it is worth the drive. Getting my tee time was easy and the range was very nice. Some holes we were waiting but other than that, pace was fine. Awesome restaurant and outdoor patio area overlooking a few of the holes. My favorite golf course restaurant/bar combo. This course is also a PXG fitter/dealer, and PXG doesn't just ask anyone to do that. A vote of confidence and my recommendation to give the course a shot
Columbia Golf Course
Played On 08/16/2017My "After work" track
Columbia is a nice golf course. It is a Minneapolis Parks course, so you know it is maintained pretty well. Heavy divots in some of the greens but that is not really the courses fault. Pace of play can vary, i have played here 9 times this season ranging from prime-time weekend slots to 6pm twilights. Just like other Minneapolis courses, it can get a little crowded. A little patience is needed at this course now and then but I can deal with that. Brand new Yamaha carts this year, very nice addition to Columbia. The staff is nice, I enjoy interacting with them and they help boost my opinion of the course. Frequent weddings about 25 yards off the right-side of the #18 green can turn your final approach shot turn into a mental game. Just have to trust your swing and let it fly. Valid concern about putting one in the crowd though. Course is a little loud for my liking. It is in a busy part of Minneapolis so you get heavy traffic noise and a train basically cuts the course in half.Clubhouse was nice but the training facility is by far their best amenity. Give it a try, I enjoy it even though its not overly tough.
Francis A. Gross Golf Course
Played On 08/15/2017A good course for a close to home round
This course is pretty nice, like all of the Minneapolis parks clubs. They are maintained well, facilities are pretty nice and the staff is average but not bad by any means. The layout is not my favorite, it feels a little clumped together but for the area it is in I can accept it. The par 3's are the best part, they are challenging and I always enjoy them. My only real complaint: slow rounds. There are usually a lot of people on this course and it jams up. Especially at the tee for #3. You will be waiting if you play this course, but if you don't mind then you will be just fine. Overall, I feel it is a nice course for a round after work or if you don't feel like driving too far out of the city. It is worth playing.
Midland Hills Country Club
Played On 08/14/2017A solid country club
I have played this country club a handful of times, and I really like it. They have a very nice pro shop and clubhouse, staff is pretty nice and the range is one of my favorites I have been to. Multiple targets, different sized greens and other things you can aim at. The course is maintained really well and the greens are close to perfect. People fix their divots, but its a country club so people probably have an added interest in keeping their club nice. They have some water hazards on the front 9 and the back 9 is more wooded. This is a city country club but for the most part you don't realize it while playing. There is only 1 hole that runs along a freeway, so you have to be a little careful there not to go right. Mental game. They have nice outdoor bathrooms, which is always a plus. I love playing here and can't wait until I am back.
Eagle Eye Golf Club
Played On 07/22/2017Just incredible
I took a trip to visit a friend in July and we decided to play a few times while I was in town. I picked Eagle Eye and I am very glad I did. This track is incredible. Absolutely awesome golf experience. The clubhouse was phenomenal, staff was welcoming, food was great and the course was immaculate. I could not stop talking about this course. It was exactly what I like in a golf course. Awesome views, quiet area, good pace of play and very well taken care of. I can remember all 18 holes and it takes a lot for me to do that. This course is tough, so tighten up your groupings because you will be challenged. Par 3's are awesome and the 5's will make you prove that you can play the game. Carts were brand new and very nice, ranger was helpful and offered advice on how to play certain holes, the yardage book was a great collector item and I can't say many more positive things. I would fly to Michigan again, just to play this course. 10/10 recommend.
Bedford Valley Course at Gull Lake View Golf Club and Resort
Played On 07/21/2017A quaint Michigan gem
I played here Mid July and loved it. It is the quietest course I have ever played. Extremely thick forest all around the course. Really incredible track, in my opinion. Great conditions, nice tees and firm greens. The clubhouse was very nice and the staff was friendly. Nice golf carts and they had nice bathrooms out on the course, which was a definite boost to the value. Great holes and a challenging course. My friend and I both loved it. If you are errant, you will lose a lot of balls. Pace of play was nice, everyone moved along well. The hole design really helps move play along. There were not any bottle necks on the course that I ran into. Definitely give this track a try if you are in town, you won't be disappointed. A real treat for locals, as well as tourists,
Brightwood Hills Golf Course
Played On 07/20/2017A alright par 3 short course
I have played this short course a couple of times now and to its credit, the conditions have gotten better over the last 2 years. Do not go any time close to opening, the conditions will not be nice. Mid to end of season the grass is decent and its playable. Clubhouse is fine, small driving range and 1 practice green. They offer carts although you might as well walk for the cost savings. Some of the holes are very short, if you want to tune up your wedges or putting this place would be a good fit. Don't plan to play anything longer than an 8 iron though. Pace has always been fine, staff is average. It is a city course that seems neglected at times. Its worth it to drive to Island Lake and play there instead, if you want a short course that is maintained.
Island Lake Golf & Training Center
Played On 07/11/2017A good wedge tune up
This is by far the best par 3 course in the metro area, in my opinion. The course is well taken care of and looks wonderful. The clubhouse is nothing special and the range is somewhat packed together but their assortment of things to aim for is pretty fun. Practice green is nice. Some water on this course which provides a little challenge. I have walked every time, no real need to take a cart. Greens were a little slow but that could have just been the day. They have a little area where you can get food but it didn't even look like it was in service. There was also a lot of stuff laying around in the clubhouse. Boxes and such. I try not to be too hard on it though since it is a par 3 course. Pace is alright, short holes means waiting some times. It is close to a freeway so you will hear road noise. You won't swing anything longer than a 7 iron so take note. I like it to sharpen my wedges and short irons.
Medina Golf & Country Club - Par-3 Course
Played On 07/10/2017A nice CC
What is not to like about Medina CC? Only thing could be the drive to the course. Other than that, its a really nice place. The course is going through some renovations which will make the course even better. The conditions of the course are top notch, the grounds crew does a great job with that. The greens are really quick and the bunkers are taken care of. There are some risk/reward holes and some spots where you can really go after pin. The staff is okay, they are knowledgeable but the golf pros are the only people I have ever felt welcomed by. The clubhouse is great and the food is good. I enjoy playing here and am excited to get back
The Ponds Golf Club - Red Golf Course
Played On 06/14/2017Can't decide on how I feel
This course is average in my opinion, the conditions are fine and the staff is alright but I just can't fall in love with this course. I got my first eagle on the 2nd hole and I will always remember that hole but I can't say any of the rest of them stuck out in my mind as something I have to play again. Value is fine, the carts are old and need updating. Especially when a lot of tracks near the Ponds have recently purchased new Yamaha carts. I was quite surprised at how old these carts seemed. Clubhouse is okay, more of a restaurant with a piece of it devoted to the golf shop. Nothing impressive but it gets the job done. I have always liked their food and people seem to enjoy the bar. Driving range is across the street but its a range you can swing your driver so thats nice. Decent track, but for the money, I am going to play a different course.
Papago Golf Course
Played On 02/15/2017The little brother of the Arizona big hitters
I played a round of 18 at this course on my way to the airport to head home from a business trip. The staff was accommodating and I appreciated that. I did witness a staff member get involved in a pretty heated phone conversation which went on for about 15 minutes while I waited to check in for my tee time. This also held up a lady who was coming in to buy a patron pass. That was not a great start to my Papago experience. Only 1 thing though, so its hard to totally knock them. The course was well maintained, greens were nice and the views are great. A little more of an active spot in the city but it was fun watching all the helicopters and planes fly over. The clubhouse was not the greatest, especially after playing Grayhawk the day prior. Very small and low cost type environment but that is okay. The driving range was average, backdrop with the mountains was cool though. No restaurant but they do have some small food items in the clubhouse. The course was enjoyable and I am going to try and swing by again in January. It was wonderful to be able to play here and get to the airport in 10 minutes. It is not Troon North or Grayhawk, but this is a very nice course in its own right.
Talon at Grayhawk Golf Club
Played On 02/09/2017Incredible
I loved this course, I only had the chance to play the Talon but will be back in a few months to play the Raptor. I loved every aspect of this course. Clubhouse is incredible, the bar and restaurant area is extremely nice, great tees and greens. Booking my tee time was easy on their website and they treated us like we were at the Ritz. Private club feel at a public course. I love the rock n roll driving range, its a very neat piece to the course and something I look forward to checking out again. Perfect tees and greens, bunkers were top notch and I couldn't recommend this course more.
Sanibel Island Golf Club
Played On 01/05/2017A fun island course
Being one of the only public courses on Sanibel Island in Florida, this course holds it own. I was surprised at the lack of a range, but they had a nice practice putting green at least. The clubhouse is nice and they have a great restaurant attached to the clubhouse. Staff was extremely friendly and really made me feel like a valued customer. It was not very busy, so the pace was set by me, which I liked. Greens were nice and firm, well maintained. Course has some very cool holes and very neat par 3's. They warn you of Gators hanging out in the traps, I only saw one swimming but that was cool. This is a very quiet course and a nice place to spend an afternoon.
