Classic Ross, Routing Gem

Western Golf and Country Club is another classic Donald Ross gem in the metro detroit area. Routing of the course is fantastic. 14 of 18 holes route along the Rouge River that dissects the middle of the property. Ross did a great job of making the hazard in play on so many holes. topography is very interesting for a piece of land in Redford, lots of peaks and valleys. Players can expect a good amount of raised greens, which is a good test for the approach game. Greens, as to be expected at a private club, were firm and true. Compared to some other Ross gems in the area the greens are a bit subdued with most featuring the classic Ross back to front slope with a single knob or two. Course is a lovely walk. Highlight holes included the par 4 4th, par 5 15h, and the par 4 17th.

Northern Michigan Must-Play

Lochenheath is a fantastic 18 hole private golf club just on the outskirts of Traverse City. Members or guests can expect to find friendly staff and top notch food before they even step on the practice tee.

As for the course itself, it is a challenging Steve Smyers design that will test all facets of a players game. I found myself with a different iron/wedge into many of the greens, which speaks to the overall variety of the course. The collection of par 3s on the course are truly some of the best one-shotters in the entire state. The design navigates the rolling terrain of the property very well and makes for some fun, interesting golf.

Enjoyable Edgewood CC

Edgewood is a very typically mid tier country club layout and track in the Metro Detroit Area. All 18 holes are packed in tightly in a somewhat smaller piece of property. What the track lacks in overall length it makes up for in the dynamics of the greens. Due to the size of the property the layout is unique, only 2 par 5s and 3 par 3s (two of which are back to back). This sets up a very tough stretch of 7 straight par 4s of various lengths to end your round. Club and Course conditions were prestine, as you would expect for any country club. Look forward to getting another opportunity to play this course in the future

Friendly Classic Ross

Dearborn CC is a lovely classic Donald Ross design. Like many of his private tracks in the metro Detroit area, you can expect very gettable par 5s, switchback par 4s and par 3s that will test your accuracy and execution with mid irons. Green complexes offer some fantastic areas of pinnable locations, which no doubt would change the strategy on individual holes day to day. Again, with most Ross designs in the area, its very difficult to lose a ball on this course; something all levels of player will enjoy. Final 3 holes are one of the toughest closing 3 in the area (all 400+ par 4s with demanding greens)

Decent Track w/ Interesting Approach Game Options

Cattails was a nice track, with very straightforward holes that offered up some interesting green contours to make the round somewhat memorable. Front 9 is fairly straight foward with many dead straight holes. however, good variety in the design in that the routing features a variety of hole directions which brings in different wind directions if those elements exist. Back 9 is much more dog-legged and wooded; unlike the Front 9, the Back 9 offers some opportunities to cut off corners. I often chose to accept a longer approach with a mid to long iron on the back 9. Most of the fairways offer a variety of contours (upslope/downslope/right slope/left slope) which also challenges the approach game. I inquired about a walking rate, to which they did not offer. Still i decided to walk and must say it was disappointing that it is not offered because the course is a pretty easy walk. My twosome that walked was able to keep pace with the cart twosome in front of us the entire round. Played 18 in 3 hours and 45 mins, walking on a relatively not busy Saturday late afternoon. Will continue to visit as i thought the course does a good job of testing all of your irons due to the doglegs.

Palmer Design that Falls Flat

Having played all other Arnold Parmer Design courses in Michigan. I can safely say this was the least inspiring one. Found the course to be a bit too tricked up. Too many tee shots into complete drop offs or doglegs that could make for very long rounds for the first time player. the two uphill par 3s are a bit too extreme, then there is a down hill devils drop one that is just as extreme. just overall the design felt forced with difficulty instead of designing the holes with the average player in mind. Clubhouse and Practice Facility were fantastic, which was welcome for the warmup. But overall conditioning of fairways was poor (very patchy, spotty) and tee boxes seemed to not have very good rotation as it was a rumble strip on some of them trying to hit from.

Hidden Gem in Northern MI

Hidden River is truly a hidden gem of the Northern Michigan golf scene. Played this prior to a buddies trip at Boyne Highlands and left our buddies trip talking more about how solid this track was.

The first three holes are designed wonderfully to ease you into the round of golf ahead. Two straightforward (driver not necessary) par 4s and a mid length par 3 really help to get your swing in place. Once you take the drive to start #4 you are transformed to an entirely different piece of property. The land is vast, with all your next holes routed through and around a lake. These holes, have wide landing areas for tee shots and well protected and angled greens to challenge approach shots. Front nine rounds off with a lovely devlis drop style par 3 that is much difficult than it looks

The back nine then shifts into a more woooded environment on the property. Playability off the tee is still very reasonable, this is not claustrophobic golf. Biggest challenge on this course is approach shots and layups that are uphill (#7 and #16 come to mind), giving you a great sense of insecurity on hitting the correct lines. Fantastic design in that aspect

Conditions are absolutely stellar. A fantastic large grass range awaits your warmup. Clubhouse is state of the art too. Will 100% visit this course again, loved it

Just Pure Golf Experience

Kingsley Club is the purest golf experience i have had the pleasure to play. The terrain and topography is absolutely stunning, greens are complex and true. Many tee shots are blind over huge mounds and ridges with generous landing areas if the correct line is taken. Practice facility is the best ive seen in the state as well with many pins as well as a large bunker to practice fairway shots (you will hit some of those throughout the round). The clubhouse is the modest of any club ive had the privilege to play, and its supposed to be that way. Kingsley Club is ALL GOLF, no frills. Come and enjoy what is easily one of the greatest tracks in the entire state.

Solid Addition to SW MI Golf

Thought the piece of property and land was very impressive, highest point in battle creek area it seemed and you can see clear from one end of the course to the other. very impressive how the holes are shaped to the land and not vice versa.

The green complexes were absolutely fantastic, all the greens i thought were pretty small in size. which became even smaller when you take into effect the complexes. even in early growth thou they played rather firm today but rolled so true.

the start of the round, holes 1-5 were pretty uneventful, felt like you just go back and forth (one hole north, one hole south, etc.) with 4 par 4s. Once you get to the par 5 6th thou the round really started to become something great

i do have to say i think the back nine is one of the finest collections of holes ive played in a while. the 3 par threes are absolutely phenomenal. the par 5s feature favorable landing areas and great greens made pars feel great, imagine birdies feel even better. the stretch of 10-14 was just spectacular.

overall i would def say as the course grows in it will only become even better. peak season i would pay in the $105-85 range for this course when its fully grown in. Doaks associates did a spectacular job routing the course with the land and i left thoroughly pleased. Wind howled all day and made for a very difficult scoring round, but still had a great time. highly recommend it

Classic Ross Design with Pristine Conditions

This course is an absolutely fantastic Ross design. the strategy is evident from every tee shot as bunkers are properly placed in the landing area that is accessible from each player from every tee. Greens are classic Ross style: small, heavily contoured and raised. A missed green is punished with difficult pitches and chips over collars. As a top private in the Metro Detroit area, excellent conditions and hospitality are to be expected, and DGC hits the mark there. Truly a layout that has stood the test of time and requires strategy for even the best of players

Typical Nicklaus Difficulty with Awful Routing

This is a very well maintained golf course. conditions, even in november, were pretty pristine. I am not particularly fond of many of Jack's designs and this was no exception. The biggest gripe about the course is how it is COMPELTELY UNWALKABLE. there are at least 4 transitions where you drive over 5 mins to the next tee. While the majority of golfers may not care about this at all, designing with the option of walking in mind is always appreciated in my mind. I have no idea how the Champions Tour guys walk it at the Senior PGA, there must be carts that shuttle them.

The practice area is stellar, could spend an entire morning utilizing all their facilities cause they are awesome. Course has some charm when you get to #7-9 stretch, playing out to Lake Michigan. But after those holes you drive another 5 mins to the 10th, only to begin another bland stretch of holes, then drive another 5 mins and play one memorable hole in the par 5, 15th. Besides that stretch there really wasnt any other holes worth memory.

If you did what i did and utilized the "temperature pricing" that i did then its worth the play in the fall because the conditions are still that good for the discounted rate. But overall its a course that leaves a lot to be desired with a lack of design strategy in any of the holes.

Fantastic Facility

Boulder Pointe is a great facility. All 27 holes are designed very well with great variety on all levels of par. Each Nine brings its own unique characteristics that are signified by their names (Dunes/Bluffs/Peaks). Any routing is a good test of golf. Course plays very fair from any set of tees, with the back tees being a good challenge if you are a single digit handicap. Highly Recommend

Northern Michigan Golf in Oakland County

The Woods course at Twin Lakes is the most difficult 9 on its property. The toughness you will experience on the nine hole journey will be evened well with fantastic Northern Michigan style holes. All par 4s are very playable, where two good shots will reward you with a good opportunity at birdie. Fairways are wide enough to help play, but errant tee shots will make your life difficult in the trees. Twin Lakes is easily one of the best condition courses (any of the 3 courses) in Oakland County and is a must play for any golf enthusiast

Bucket List Course - Tough Track

Tullymore is definitely a bucket list course for any Michigan golfer. There is a reason it is in the Golf Digest top 100 public for so many years running. Conditions are pristine, facilities are top notch, and course is very memorable. In my time playing it i did find the layout of the entire course to be a bit wonky. 3 out of 4 holes on the front nine are par 3s, and the hole inbetween is a very very target golf par 4. There are at least 3 other target golf par 4s that i thought effected the playability and enjoyment i had. It was def a players course, very strategic. Course plays very difficult for the first time player. By the end of my rounds i was happy it was over, but also intrigued to play again as i felt i had a better idea of how to play the course. Would def recommend this course to anyone. Could possible be one of the cheapest rounds inside the Golf Digest Top 100 Public

Solid Track in the Boyne Family

The Alpine at Boyne Mt. is on the lower tier of the 10 Boyne golf courses, but that doesnt mean it is not worth of playing. The course weaves down the back side of Boyne Mountain Summit and offers a wide variety of layouts. With 5 tees to choose from it is a fair fair golf course for any level of golfer. If you an early riser, a round can easily be completed in 2.5 hours, ive done it many times at this course. Overall its a solid golf course that would be more publicly lauded if it was located in the lower part of the state or wasnt under the umbrella of BoyneGolf

Mt. Rushmore of Metro Detroit Public Golf

The Orchards is easily one of the 4 courses on the Mt Rushmore of Metro Detroit Public Golf. It is a stern test that will require precise and accurate iron shots. Greens are moderate sized, and the area around the greens can be punishing with thicker rough and usually tricky bunkering. There is a nice variety in the layout with some holes guarded by woods and other routing through the near by housing developments and allowing for great playability. This is easily on of the most expensive public tracks in the area; however, this is a MUST PLAY for any nearby Michigan golfer

Truly a Place to Preach

Erin Hills is an absolutely remarkable golf course and destination. The views throughout the entire course are breathtaking. The course itself is a stern test of golf, first time players would do well to tee it one forward as the HIKE (and i emphasize HIKE) will kick your butt, regardless if you are a regular walker. The variety of holes and shot options make it a very memorable experience. Some highlights are the par 4 blind tee shots on 2nd 8th and 12th. The par 3s very fair and reward shots that hold the green. There is an aura to this place like you are going to church to worship. If you have a chance to play it DO IT, youll thoroughly regret it if you dont.

Best Public Track in Michigan

Forest Dunes is IMO the best public course in MI. The layout is a very manageable and enjoyable walk . The variety of holes make the round very memorable. The front nine plays through the woods massaging players to shape the ball both ways off the tee, the memorable par 4 5th is a great "choose your route" hole that makes it very playable. The back nine then routes out into dunes style terrain. the driveable par 4 (#17, a Weiskopf Design Staple) is a great risk reward hole which can help your scorecard prior to the lengthy par 5 18th. the Bye Hole is a wonderful final 19th hole, designed to help settle four-some bets that is a great way to end the round. The entire facility (lodging, clubhouse, practice) is *****. DO NOT MISS THIS PLACE ON YOU NORTHERN MICHIGAN GOLF TRIPS

Standard Muni Course - Very Playable Ross Design

Rackham is a very standard municipal style golf course. Playing 6500+ from the Tips, it is a shorter layout but one that does require solid ball striking to score well. The classic Donald Ross Design features small, well guarded greens that require precise distances to hold. Any ball that in on the green in regulation has a fair chance for a birdie. The course is very friendly for mid-teen handicappers and above... it is nearly impossible to lose a ball here, something some of my friends thoroughly enjoy about the place. For the better player, many holes require strategy off the tee, (iron/hybrid to the middle of fairway with a longer approach, or take on doglegs with driver) is a welcome challenge. Overall it is a very servicable and friendly golf course that deserves the amount of play it receives on a yearly basis

Classic Nicklaus Track

The Bull at Pinehurst Farms is a classic Jack Nicklaus design. Plan to encounter many strategic par 4s that will require correct club selection and accuracy off the tee. The course routing is very enjoyable, with both nines starting you comfortably in the open before heading into the tree lines area, which is where the teeth of the course can be found. Conditions, even in April, were fantastic all things considered. This was a very tough track, but one that left you rewarded when you executed good shots. Highly Recommend this course, truly a must play.
