Pebble Beach Golf Links™
Played On 05/07/2019Simply spectacular
I was so looking forward to playing the 18th hole. By the time I played 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11 ... 18 was somewhat an afterthought. If you can, you must play Pebble.
St. Andrews Links - Old Course
Played On 05/07/2019Hallowed Ground
Standing on the 1st tee, the R&A behind me, the valley of sin to my left, and that very wide fairway in front of me. I can't find the words. If you have the means, you must stand there.
Cold Spring Country Club
Played On 05/04/2019Gimmicks
6 par 3s and 6 par 5s. Many gimmick holes, including a 225 uphill par 4. Just not for me.
Longmeadow Country Club
Played On 06/01/2018Pure Arrogance
Played as a guest of a member. Arrived early. Drove my cart to the driving range before my member partner arrived. Starting hitting balls, when the pro arrived and very sternly let me know carts were not allowed at the range and escorted me off the range. The player next to me called him. Guess its what you would expect from an elitist country club.
GreatHorse Golf Course
Played On 10/02/2016Simply Spectacular
I was able to play at this magnificent establishment as a guest. Overall, GreatHorse is spectacular, you will not find anything like this in our area.
First, the amenities are elite. Spectacular lodge overlooking a magnificent skyline. We had drinks outside watching the sunset at a table with a built-in fire-pit. Awesome.
There is a pool, and tennis, and a fitness center, and everything else you might want or expect.
Now for the golf. For those of you that remember Hampden Country Club, it's the same layout with some major improvements. Fairways are wide, immaculate, firm, and tight. There now must be a million bunkers. #1 and #10 are still downhill par-4's, but 10 has a double sided, bunker filled, unbelievable fairway giving the option of going for it! ... or playing safer tee shot out to the right.
And now for the greens. Tilted, undulated, tight, and FAST. And I mean FAST! I found myself wondering if this is what Augusta is like. You just gotta be on the correct side of the hole, or else. BEWARE! ... the average player is going to struggle on these greens.
For me, for the golf itself (not thinking about those awesome amenities), for this area, for the track itself, I'd still take Crestview or Westover, even Ledges. I could not handle those greens at that speed, would drive me crazy. And after all, it's still Hampden CC ... on super steroids.
I'd definitely recommend anyone to get there if you can. Then up to you if the total package is worth the cost.
Mill Valley Country Club
Played On 09/03/2016Once was enough
Greens were in very good shape and rolling very well; best part of this golf course. Staff was very friendly. Only paid $25 for a weekend morning tee time with a cart. Truth is, it wasn't even worth the $25.
The course is (hate to use the words) a cow pasture. Tee boxes and many fairways were dry, cracked, and not maintained.
Mill Valley claims to be the toughest course in WMass, and that's probably true.
Fairways are tree-lined and narrow. On many slight fairway misses, the contour will take your ball to the woods.
Several tee shots are to a 90 degree dogleg, requiring a well placed iron shot. To me, not too interesting.
Par 5's requiring an iron shot from the tee; even an iron for the 2nd. To me, not too interesting.
Many of the greens are severely sloped. I was below the hole; putting uphill about 25 feet; and once the ball stopped near the hole; it rolled back to me. Would we call that difficult? ... unfair? ... dumb?
#8 is the crown jewel; a 430+ yard par 4, twisting left a couple times. Unless you are a PGA tour player, there is no chance to get to this green in 2; might take 3; or even 4. Difficult? Unfair? Dumb?
Apologize for the negativity, but just trying to provide ample feedback for anyone thinking about playing here. Once was enough for me.
Westover Golf Club
Played On 08/13/2016Best condition ever!
I've been playing Westover for years, and it's in the best condition I've ever seen. If you haven't been here, or maybe in awhile, give it a look. Still one of the best tracks in our area.
Cold Spring Country Club
Played On 08/29/2015It's OK, but ...
Six par 3's and five par 5's. 9th hole is a funky 200 yard par 4 straight up a hill. The entire course just seems tricked-up, like I was looking for a clown's nose or a windmill. Just not for me.
St. Anne Country Club
Played On 08/03/2015Nothing special here
It's OK, just nothing special. Track is short and basic. Clubhouse is basic. Sorry, just average.
The Ranch Golf Club
Played On 09/06/2014Overrated
My group and I made an infrequent visit to The Ranch yesterday, and sad to say, we were very disappointed. Of course, the track itself is still excellent (especially #9 and #16) , but conditions have become quite ordinary. My group is not an "elite" group, we play everywhere, public, private, muni's, etc. But when we checked in, and were told, "$95 for the round, and $5 if you want the range," gotta say we annoyed. Really? $5 for the range? I'd rather pay $100, and then kindly reminded about the range. The pro never looked up at us the entire time. Range was beat up, the marked hitting areas were very used up and worn. Fairways were just ordinary. Greens ordinary. Nothing like the "perfect" conditions that we have seen in the past and were expecting again. The best part was the 19th hole; still a terrific ambiance, views, and food/drink. I can no longer recommend the Ranch at $95. The overall experience just did not measure up.
Crestview Country Club
Played On 09/04/2014Hard to find better in WMass
The track and the conditions are excellent. Crestview is easily in the class with The Orchards and Crumpin- Fox. Fairways and greens are always in top condition. And hard to beat those four closing holes!
Ledges Golf Club
Played On 9/15/2013Would very much recommend The Ledges!
Conditions were better than most courses in the area. Tee Boxes and Fairways were in excellent condition. Greens are faster than most courses and the ball rolls well. Only complaint on the greens are the multitude of pitch marks, those not repaired, or in process of healing.
Golf shop pro's were friendly and helpful.
Restaurant is very good for an after 18 cocktail and lunch.
