Westover Golf Club
Played On 07/09/2019Westover is great
Westover is a long challenging course from the tips, and is one of the longest in the area. You’ll do well to put the driver away on some of the long par 4’s and choose to get into the fairway and approach with a longer iron. Greens were rolling true and the course looks great except for bunker sand has become packed and hard in many cases. Use fluffy mason sand, not corse sand please. Staff is great and the refreshments cart is always buzzing around making sure you’re not thirsty. Westover is one of the very best municipal courses I’ve ever golfed.
Quail Hollow Country Club
Played On 06/26/2019Challenging mountain top course
Quail Hollow is a short par 70 course cut out of a mountain top. Walkers beware! Conditions were great even though the region has had record rainfall for months. Greens rolled fast and they are small so get your scoring irons ready. Only a couple par 5’s, but the variety of par 4 designs is the signature of Quail Hollow. Staff and members were welcoming. We didn’t eat, but we certainly had time as pace of play was incredibly fast as we finished 18 with a cart in just over 3 hours. Yes, just over 3 hours! If I lived 2 steps closer I’d be a member. If your fav club is a driver then this isn’t your course, but if you like vistas and a course that demands the use of many clubs in your bag, you must play Quail Hollow.
Chicopee Country Club
Played On 07/10/2018Great front 9, but quirky design overall
This course has a great front 9, but it’s over rated a bit. Very busy course, and pace of play is slower than most. The back nine has a strange design. One hole has a net to keep balls out of the practice area and club house, and then there are 2 par 3’s in a row that play to nearly the same yardage and elevation. The back 9 seems like a design after-thought. The greens are the best aspect of the course. Very well manicured. There are few courses that I would not recommend because we all love golf and each course offers something new, but Chicopee is over rated in my opinion.
Westover Golf Club
Played On 07/19/2017Long with punishing rough
Westover has a couple very long par 4's and a few par 5's, so long hitters have some advantages. The rough could use a medium cut to transition from fairway to long rough. If you're off the fairway, you're hitting a flyer or chunk every time. It's always busy but efficient at getting you on the course. Beverage cart is great. Staff is good, conditions are good. Great course to walk as it is basically two plateaus so no up/down.
Ellinwood Country Club
Played On 07/10/2017Great course
Ellinwood staff are friendly and get you onto the course quickly. Conditions are always great. The first par 5 and a few par 4's are very challenging with interesting layout. Small greens, so get your approach shots and putter tuned. Cart paths are awful, but why speed around? Relax and enjoy, or walk. This is a favorite of mine. Worth the drive!
