Berkshire Valley Golf Course
Played On 08/27/2023Do not go early on the morning if you want to play regular green
I like the course and I think is one of the best in the area. First 5/6 holes are spectacular, but in general the lay out is very nice.
Also price is fair for such a course.
What I did find not acceptable is that I played at 6:30 and greens were not wiped out so basically I finished my round at 10:20 with greens still wet and slow. So my suggestion if you want to play the course and enjoy proper greens is to get an afternoon tee time
Ballyowen Golf Club
Played On 08/26/2023Course layout is very nice and so is maintenance and staff. Definitely one of the best Public course in NJ. Maybe first tee time at 6:10 is a little “aggressive” as there was not so much light for the first two holes. Greens were in great shape even though a little slow. I was paired with two other players and we were allowed to tee off before a foursome who was supposed to play before us and ended up finishing the round in 3:30’!
Only comment is that $217 is a little expensive compared to other nice Public courses in the area.
Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club
Played On 08/28/2017Need to improve the "desert style"
Hole by hole the course is not bad and actually quite fun to play but the property need to impove the status of all the desert part of the course. I understand the management has decided to transform big part of the rough in desert but in order to make it playable also the desert part needs to be well maintained somehow! Also, the first nine holes are very close to the motorway and therefore quite noisy. Much more fun was playing the second nine both for the noise and the layout. Overall not bad and a quite good deal for a twilight rate of $35 after 2 PM but I don't think I'll go again, at least until they will do some proper car path which should avoid all the dust we got from the cart in front of us!
Mt. Woodson Golf Club
Played On 08/26/2017Great accuracy needed
I liked the course very much. Probably a little short even played by the blue tees but on the other side fairways are quite narrow and therefore a lot of accuracy is needed. The other thing I liked is that you never see other players as every hole is not close to the previous one and the next one. Both fairways and greens were in quite good conditions and overall was a lot of fun to play the course, which offers also very nice views. Will definitely go again.
The Crossings At Carlsbad
Played On 08/23/2017Best course in the area
As I did in the last three summer when I visited the San Diego area, also this year I played The Crossing which in my opinion continues to be the best public golf course of the San Diego area (and I have played all of them including Aviara, Maderas, Steele Canyon, La Costa and the two Torrey Pine, which obviously have better views). If you add the $45 twilight rate we got I believe it is an unbeatable experience. The only negative are the electricity cables crossing the course several time. Apart from this is a challenging and enjoyable course. Fairways were immaculate and greens in very good conditions even though they could have been a little faster.
Singing Hills Golf Resort at Sycuan - Willow Glen
Played On 08/18/2017Not a bad course but not very challenging in my opinion. I would not suggesr it to a low handicap player. Condition was pretty good and green very nice.
Blue/Red at Shawnee Inn & Golf Resort
Played On 09/02/2016Nice course but not very challenging
I believe Shawnee is a quite enjoyable course but ideal for a >10 hp. The red course in particular is not very challenging and, even if I played from the blue tees, it is not very long. Frankly expected a little more from a Thillingast course.
Had more fun on the more recently built White 9 holes which have more doglegs and are more ondulated. Greens are quite small but last Friday they were a little slow. Pace of play was ok but on the first nine we had a group of 4 (father, mother and 2 kids) where only the father knew how to play. Golf balls were hitten everywere and they had no idea of etiquette on the course. When I complained at the 10th tee I was told that as we were a twosome we should have expected to wait (but that was not my point!). Fortunately on the second nine they were sent on the Blue while we played the White.
Overall an ok experience but if you want a challenging and really beautiful course drive 10 minutes North to Great Bear!
Great Bear Golf Club
Played On 08/30/2016What a course!
A great course which I suggest to play to anyone who happens to be in the area. A great surprise for me as I have played many courses in West NJ. I usually don't love the Jack Niklaus design but I have to admit this is a great design. All holes are "unique" also because you never see another hole from the one you are playing. Every hole is surrounded by a wonderful forest. Conditions of the course were very very good and even if the greens were aereated only a couple of weeks ago they were among the fastest I ever found around here. If you are in the area do not miss the opportunity to play such a nice course at a very decent price ($75 for an 8am tee time on a weekday)
Rancho Bernardo Inn
Played On 08/18/2016Nice but not great
Good course even though played the first nine holes in the fog (and my tee tme was not particularly early in the morning!). A little too flattish, in particular the second nine holes. In my opinion not a great design even though an enjoyable course. First nine holes definitely better fhan the second nine. Don't think will go again as in the area have played better ones.
Friars/Presidio at Riverwalk Golf Club
Played On 08/15/2016Very convenient golf course at a fair price
Enjoyable course very close to the city center. Played on a Monday at 6.15 and the course was already quite busy!
Played the Mission and the Friars. Mission very short Friars definitely better layout even though the fairways were quite burned compared to the good status of the Mission.
Not a memourable golf experience but definitely a convenient solution if you need to be in San Diego center at a very reasonable price (paid $49).
Steele Canyon Golf Club - Canyon/Ranch
Played On 08/30/2015Nice course but expected more
Nice course in quite good conditions, but from a Gary Player course I would have expected something more.
The Ranch 9 holes efinitely better than the Meadows, but after the fitst 5 holes, quite challenging and also spectacular (the 3rd in particular) I expected more. Hole 6, 7 and 8 not very strong, better the 9th. The Meadows is quite flattish and there are not great holes to mention.
In summary a nice course to play but nothing exceptional.
The Crossings At Carlsbad
Played On 08/29/2015Wonderful course
Having read the reviews of many golf courses in the Northern San Diego area I played many other golf courses before going to the Crossing. That has been a great mistake as I enjoyed the course much more than both La Costa golf courses and not less than the highly rated Maderas and Aviara. If you consider that that cost is basically half, no doubt of playing The Crossing first! Course and green are in great conditions and the course is definitely more challenging than the above mentioned ones. In addition you get spectacular views and elevation changes with many holes played from tees well higher than the fairway. On the negative I would mention that there is a lot of driving involved as some hole is quite far from the previous one (it takes almost 5 minutes of cart to get on the 12 tee!) and that tha staff does not do a big effort to be nice: we were the second team of the day at 6:18 and it took us 4:40' to complete 18 holes with rangers not saying much to the slow first group....
Omni La Costa Resort & Spa - Legends Course
Played On 08/23/2015Not very challenging but enjoyable course
The course is nice and the staff quite welcoming (especially Lee, the starter, is great). The day I played was also in quite good conditions and pace of play has been great (less than four hours!). Course is not particularly challenging for a good player but enjoyable anyway. Only negative is the price. I believe it does not worth the regular price.
Maderas Golf Club
Played On 08/15/2015Great course conditions
Beautiful course in incredible conditions. Had a lot of fun playing it for my first time.
Course is not too long but requires a good level of accuracy.
Fairways were in perfect conditions and green as well, even though I like faster greens.
I f I have to find a "negative" comment I would only say that the course misses some character, i..e., I do not remember many holes after having played it.
Ballamor Golf Club
Played On 08/27/2014Very enjoyable course
Played on the early morning and found the course in great conditions. From the blu tees the course is a lot of fun even though not particularly difficult, especially if hitting good drives (Twisted Dunes much more difficult). Staff very nice and overall a very nice golf round. Definitely worth visiting if in the area.
Crystal Springs Golf Club
Played On 08/22/2014Challenging golf course but very enjoyable
In my opinion the most interesting golf course of Crystal Springs and probably the most challenging of the North New Jersey area. You really need to think about every shot, especially from the tee as is very important to place the first shot in the right part of the fairway. You need to be very accurate in every shot. Played following a day of heavy rain and course was in great conditions anyway. In addition even if I was the first on the course and played as a single did find only very few people working on the greens, which were all very well prepared. Even at the fill price of $85 I believe is a must play, more than Wild Turkey and Ballyowen.
Ballyowen Golf Club
Played On 08/18/2014Beautiful course but overall not the best golfing experience
I had a 6:20 tee time amd played alone. Unfortunately I had to wait at every single hole given the number of people who were working on the greens. That is unacceptable for $110! In addition the people working on the course was not very friendly and did not pay a lot of attention to the fact tgat I was there waiting.
Apart from this the course is very nice and was in great conditions as well. Played from the black tees and it was a quite challenging experience (especially the 4 par three (all above 190 yards)
I'll go back but would not go as a single early in the morning.
The Architects Golf Club
Played On 08/15/2014Great golf course
played last Friday early morning. unfortunately the greens were just aeriated but theyewere decent even in such condition. the layout of the golf course is great. there are many challenging par 4, especially if playing from the back tees. definetly one of the best public golf course in NJ.
I'm playing here tomorrow. Were the greens ok to putt on even though it was just aerated?
Sunset Valley Golf Course
Played On 08/12/2014Great municipal course
Liked very much the layout and the corse conditions. greens especially were in a quite good shape.
Wild Turkey Golf Club
Played On 08/11/2014just wonderful
great course in great conditions. A must play if in the area
Thank you for joining us earlier this month. If you are able to join us again I recommend trying the Canyon course as it has many memorable holes similar to the first 5 on Ranch. Also be aware that we are doing some course improvements that should make the Meadow course more interesting by the end of the year. Hope to see you again soon.
