Native Oaks Golf Club
Played On 11/15/2020There are better courses to play
Course is in poor condition. Granted they are overseeding and recently aerated but there is so much standing water on the course that it’s not enjoyable to play at all. Tee boxes are soaked and it’s hard to find spots that are dry enough not be technically ruled casual water. I quit after 9 because it was so bad. Much better options out there.
Maderas Golf Club
Played On 10/13/2020Maderas is in great shape
Have played this course many times. Played today and it was in the best shape I’ve seen it. Tee to green was 5 stars. The greens were a little slower than normal but understandably soft given the heat wave we’re in.
Cottonwood Golf Club - Ivanhoe Course
Played On 10/19/2019Slow and rundown
They could really use marshals to monitor the pace of play. At one point there were three groups backed up on a par 5 because of one extremely slow group. Carts and facilities are awful. It’s clear there is no regard for customer service. It’s too bad because this is one of the few classic layouts in San Diego. If the layout wasn’t so good it would hardly be worth playing here.
The course is in really bad shape
I’ve played this course off and on for years. This was the worst shape I’ve ever seen it in. Lots of bald areas on the fairways, bunkers are in terrible shape, greens are bumpy and slow, and several of the ponds are empty. It seems like the course is going under.

Played On 06/16/2018Going downhill fast
It seems like since the news broke that the course will eventually be closing to make way for residential and retail development, there is zero care for those of us who have been loyal to the course for years. Pace of play, conditions and overall staff attitude have gone completely downhill. This weekend was a new low. We played behind at least 2 sixsomes that we could see and the whole time without a marshal in sight. Called the shop to ask them to help speed things up and got a 9-hole voucher for my trouble. After 5-1/2 hours for 16 holes, I doubt I’ll ever use that voucher. No thanks. Waht a disappointment.
Carlton Oaks Lodge & Country Club
Played On 05/25/2018Pretty bad conditions and pace of play
Overall the course has potential. It’s challenging and the layout is good, but the pace of play is awful and the conditions were bad. On hole 6, they’re doing some maintenance and had the Par 4 set up as a Par 3. That’s fine, but the way it was set up was stupid. It was an 80 yard shot set up on a downslope side hill lie. What’s that all about! It was also nice that they had a tractor parked in fr? It of the green. It was like obstacle golf. IDK if I’ll play there again. It needs a lot of maintenance.
Chula Vista Golf Course
Played On 02/03/2018Still a great layout
The course is in decent shape considering how much play it gets. The greens were pretty fast and rolled consistently. There are some bald patches on the fairways but given the drought conditions, it’s better than a lot of other local courses. Great to see this course survive all the years.
Friars/Presidio at Riverwalk Golf Club
Played On 08/05/2016Despite the drought, in decent shape
Most courses in SD are brown from the drought and the heat wave, but for the most part, Riverwalk has managed the conditions pretty well the greens are rolling true and moderately fast. Fairways are pretty decent. Rough is a little longer than normal. Love the layout of the course. Not particularly hard but the wind is always a factor and makes club selection critical. Fun course.
Cottonwood Golf Club - Ivanhoe Course
Played On 03/19/2016What a disappointment
I've played this course more times than I can count, but this was the first time in a very long time. Total disappointment. While the layout is still great, classic and challenging, the condition of the greens and the the lack of any sort of pace of play regulation made it a long and pretty miserable day. What a drag. This used to be an awesome course. I don't think I'll be playing here again.
SilverRock Resort
Played On 06/23/2015Terrible conditions
I get that it's summer and that we are in a drought and that they need to aerify to maintain the turf, but wow, what a disappointment after really enjoying this course on our trip at the same time last year. They seem to have poorly managed the watering - the course was soggy in most areas and completely parched in the rest. The greens were awful - Dustin Johnson would have five-putted some of the greens. Overall, not worth the time to play it. Won't be back.
