Tierra Rejada Golf Club
Played On 08/14/2014Two Very Different Nines, but Lots of Fun
I have played Tierra Rejada Golf Club several times, as this is the home course of the high school golf team that I coach. Living in the area, Tierra Rejada and Moorpark CC are my favorite places to play. The front 9 is full of target golf challenges as you play up on the cliffs. Wayward shots will be severely punished. The back 9 is down in the valley, is much flatter, and easier. There are several photo opportunities on this course, and wonderful views on a clear day. The course is in good shape, as the drought hasn't seemed to kill it like it has other courses. The staff is friendly and easy to deal with, and the prices are good for the quality of the course. I played on a $29 hot deal, and that is an absolute steal. Normal rack rates are priced fairly as well, especially during the twilight hours. The course is normally empty, so you can play a twilight round for cheap and be done in 3.5 hours. If you have never been, I highly recommend Tierra Rejada.
Angeles National Golf Club
Played On 08/07/2014Jack Would be Angry...
if he came back to Angeles National and saw what a dump this place is. What looked like a challenging, beautiful layout seems to have fallen by the wayside due to lack of course maintenance. I understand that we are in the midst of a drought in California, but to have brown fairways, unkempt greens, etc. it is highway robbery for the course to charge the prices it does. The poor conditions combined with slow play made it a miserable day. The staff was not friendly at all. Kurt was curt (pun intended because it's the truth). The starter, Stephanie, was nice and very helpful though. Needless to say I will never play this course again, and I hope others don't waste their time and money on a course that uses Jack Nicklaus's name in vein.
Valley at Marriott's Desert Springs Resort
Played On 07/16/2014A Summer Steal in the Desert
My wife and I had a great time playing the Valley Course on the Desert Springs Resort property. We stayed at the hotel, and played at 7:00 AM to avoid the heat. The weather was fine until we finished hole #14 at about 10:00 AM, and it started to really heat up outside. There was plenty of water to drink all around the course, so it didn't get too uncomfortable. As far as the course itself, it is in excellent shape, especially for a desert course in the summer. Everything is green and well maintained. I am a 13 handicap, and my wife is a beginner, but we both had a great time and we finished our round in 3 hours 40 minutes. We only saw 3 other groups on the course all day, and the staff was very friendly and they let the two of us go out on our own. Doug the starter will give you every hint you need to know about the course, and let me tell you his advice alone probably shaved 3 strokes off my score. We highly recommend this course, especially in the summer when the rates are low.
