Arizona National Golf Club
Played On 04/16/2022Never Disappointing
Course is in great shape this time of year, although the bunkers leave a bit to be desired. Kinda rocky in some and most are pretty thin. Greens were wicked quick and the fairways were very nice. No thin spots, very consistent. Hard to go wrong at this course. Even in the off season when things get a little less perfect, the greens fees are adjusted accordingly and the value remains high.

Played On 08/02/2020COVID is not helping here
Staff was great, greens were firm and clean (as expected) and the weather was 68 and foggy as expected. The best part of the course besides the greens was the secondary rough! Was lush and tough, but fair. The fairways were mediocre at best and the tee boxes were not good on most holes. Can’t really rate the bunkers with the “no rakes” rule in order. The people there are great, but without the after-round cocktail and sandwich, the $116 price was a little steep. I will definitely go back after the COVID restrictions lift, but not before at those prices.

Played On 06/22/2020A Tin Cup Classic
Really in great shape for the heat of the summer in southern AZ. tees off at 9:20 and was back in the Catalina Foothills by 2. Fairways were tight and good, most teeing grounds were in good shape, AND made it on in 2 from the Tin Cup “try it” spot! Friendly staff, really spectacular value.

It had been a good 10 years since I'd played last. Amenities still get a 4 star even though the clubhouse is in mid-remodel. They are grilling on the 10th tee box and have beer and canned cocktails available in the Pro Shop. For $62 on a Sunday at 9am, you can't beat it!. Fairways were decent, good roll. Greens in fair shape, albeit a little slow. Pace of play would have been better, but there was a group 3 in front of us that were just plain slow. The Marshall did everything he could short of throwing them off the course. It was only a 60 min drive from Livermore, but of course the drive home (we played 2) was a nightmare at 6pm on a weekend. Looking forward to going back and scoring better, as it can be a tough course even though it is relatively short. The front is a par 34 with one par 5 and three par 3's. Go play it! you won't be disappointed.
Merlot/Chardonnay at Poppy Ridge Golf Course

SO glad I live 5 miles from here! There are other nice courses close, but not a fan of the long rounds at Callippe and can't swing the $125 for a round at Wente too often. Greens are great even when in transition from punching, fairways tend to be firm with minimal over watering issues. For those who are higher handicaps, BRING PLENTY OF GOLF BALLS! Great views of the course with zero traffic or urban noise. Good staff, players tend to be friendly, nothing pretentious, just a great Second Home of the NCGA.

Played On 02/14/2017Best Valentines Gift Ever!
I couldn't have had a better Valentines day. Wife went to work, I played golf! I've played here many times before, but the online rate of $49 with a cart was so good, we went around twice! ($25 replay). They fairways were surprisingly good considering all of the rainfall NorCal has gotten over the last month. The greens were receptive but not soft, rolling very true. The bunkers were, of course, destroyed. This weather has been tough on bunkers everywhere. Free drop. No question, this is a challenging course, more so when the rough in in US Open condition like it is now! Hasn't been much opportunity to mow, so...
If you've never been, go. If you've been, go again!

Played On 08/03/2016Even $25 seems steep
Since removing 18 of the 36 holes and combining them into one course, the layout has become a hard to follow random mess of holes. Greens are decent, and that's about it. The carts are so beat up they are borderline dangerous. If you can find a level spot on a tee box it's covered in quack grass. The "water hazards" are sad, dried up pits overgrown with weeds. Even on the cart paths (when paved) the grass and weeds are growing up through the cracks and over the edges. Even the flags for thi pins are faded and tattered. Where did the millions of dollars recently spent on this course go? The wood-fired pizza oven?? Speaking of which, the food in the bar was very good. Pace of play got excellent because there was no one in front or behind us at 2:30 on a beautiful Wednesdsy. I've played this course on occasion over the last 12 years and will no longer.
Great review! Thanks and it's good to know that balls aren't plugging at SJO. I can feel better about planning a visit soon. Also, didn't know about the reasonable replay rate. Congrats on a happy marriage BTW!
