About

I love traveling around to courses within 2-3 hours of San Francisco. If a course has a 4 star rating or above, I'm usually willing to make the drive. I live in San Francisco, but consider Yocha Dehe my home course. I play multiple times a week and I generally post single digit handicap scores. I appreciate courses without a lot of houses on them and friendly staff members in the clubhouse. I've played a ton of varying courses and appreciate a well maintained club that's reasonably priced. They're out there... so I'm willing to travel to them instead of playing crumby ones just because they're close to wheee I live.

The Course at Wente Vineyards

Over crowded, slow, packed with foreigners.

Frost delay. Packed. Left after 6 holes. Don’t put up tee times online if you’re already scrambling from a frost delay. By 1:30 the place was at a standstill with no rangers on the course. Yocha Dehe is twice the caliber of Wente and always manages their pace of play better. I’ve yet to play a round at Wente without egregious waits on every hole. It’s a shame too, Wente is an awesome course, but the consistently slow pace of play combined with foreign, out of the country hackers everywhere is making me seriously reconsider playing again. It’s a 1.5 hour drive for me to get there and I didn’t make that sort of a trip to twiddle my fingers during a 6 hour round.

Under repair

The course is undergoing a massive effort to bring it back after being scorched this summer. Things are already turning around, but a few of the greens are still struggling. Everything else is always a pleasure.

Awesome.

25 bucks, empty course, great course conditions, beautiful surroundings. At some point this place has to catch on. It baffles me that such a spectacular course is often pretty empty...and cheap! If you're in northern CA, this is a must see. Its well worth the drive. Some of the tee boxes need the divots filled and the sand in the bunkers is closer to a light grain dirt. I'm guessing the wind would blow fluffy sand away. Those are my only complaints. 3rd time playing and will be back again.

Lots of work going on...

The course is undergoing a huge effort to bounce back after the hot summer. They're aggressively tackling all of the problem areas and the greens are bouncing back. Give this place a month of cooler temperatures and she'll be ready for tournament season for sure. Still very very playable and always a beautiful place to go. Staff and amenities always 5+stars. Special shout out to Cory, Kellen, Paul, Joe and Dillon. You guys are awesome and always make me feel at home.

Overbooked, slow, rude pro shop staff.

Young gentleman with the half sleeve tattoo in his right arm in the pro shop was super rude, completely swamped course with 3-4 groups on every hole after teeing off at 3pm. Play came to a complete standstill at hole 12. Ended up spending the rest of the afternoon fishing golf balls out of the vineyards. Pro shop closes at 5pm so forget about getting your money back. Eaglevines consistently does a better job of managing pace of play. Course conditions Are good but it's hard to enjoy them with 10 minute waits for every shot on every hole.

Challenging, scenic

Greens perfect, bunkers a little ratty around the edges, fairways good, tee boxes good, general cleanliness good, layout excellent, great for advanced players, nice facilities, golf carts a little clunky, practice facility good, pace of play excellent, windy. Chardonnay is a little better maintained, but eagle vines is still in good condition and very in to play.

Weird.

No clue who's rating this place 4+ stars. Good supervision from the marshalls, Greens were perfect, bunkers needed to be edged badly, inconsistent sand in all the bunkers (some had a strange red gravel in them and others with traditional sand) fairways decent but had lots of weeds, dead spots and swampy areas, tee boxes good condition. Front nine was a total bore, flat and really basic. Signage, ball washers and tee markers all beat up and old. Tons of houses on every hole, all trashy looking with junk all over the yards. Back nine was better with some really nice holes. I'd say there's about 4 decent holes out there out of the entire 18. The rest are completely unremarkable. This is not a course for advanced players. Lots of pony tails, tank tops and blue jeans on the course too. Clubhouse was a dump. Gas golf carts annoying. One of the locals told me it's the only course in the valley area. Maybe that's why it's getting such great reviews, zero competition? Whatever the reason was, I'm seriously not seeing what all the fuss is about. First and last time playing there.

Frustrating afternoon, no supervision.

Now I played all through high school on the team so I'm sympathetic to sharing the course with them now that I'm older. I think 3-4 hours for a 9 hole women's match is Ridiculous. Our coach would have never allowed that. No starter on the tee, golfers jumping ahead of the match and other players unsupervised, huge mess on the course and no marshall anywhere. Several golfers heading out on the back nine ahead of other golfers without any consideration from the club house about those making the turn. If you're going to let high school players on the course for free, please remember your PAYING customers and supervise the event. Never finished the round. Ended up skipping all over the course avoiding the match and the jammed up golfers. Disaster.

Windy

Played on a very windy day. Not my first time on the course. The bunkers are a little shabby with lots of wet packed clay like sand. Greens rolling nicely, Tee boxes in good shape with a few bumpy spots. Nice fairways with the occasional crab grass patch. Nice driving range with actual grass to hit off of. Challenging course from the back tees, especially in the wind.

Fun value

The place is in surprisingly good condition. I played the East course and would play it again for sure. There are several breathtaking views from some of the tea boxes and greens. The course is fun and challenging but also very playable. The facilities and the golf carts or somewhat out dated, but the price is right for the caliber of course. Greens rolled a little on the slow side and several bunkers could use new sand in them. Some of the tee boxes and fairways also had several patches of large weeds and crab grass. Overall the east course was a great value and lots of fun. A little TLC out there and a facility facelift could easily make this a 5 star location.

My favorite course

I play here a couple of times a week and drive there from San Francisco. I never leave unhappy or displeased with the course, staff and facilities. The pace can be a little slow on the weekends, but normally they do a good job managing it. This is a must see course if you're in Northern California.

Sad state of neglect.

Friendly staff and beautiful views. Greens are a disaster with competing strains of grasses making for a ridiculous bumpy mess. Burnt fairways, lumpy trashed tee boxes, dead animal carcasses on several holes, trash and litter strewn about, overgrown rough, unkempt wooded areas flowing out onto the course, bunkers filled with more mud and rocks than sand, trashed driving range with little to no grass on the hitting surface. I don't think that this is what Arnold Palmer had in mind. Hopefully Troon can turn this place around because a beautiful course like this should be taken care of. I was told tee boxes and bunkers are scheduled to be cleaned up. I was also told that "Troon can only improve the course as much as the owner is willing to invest in the process." Sadly I won't be back anytime soon. Yocha Dehe and Diablo Grande are much better Troon courses for the money. Hiddenbrook does have one thing going for it, its dirt cheap. Guess you get what you pay for...

Neglected

The course is in deplorable condition. Burnt fairways, mud filled bunkers, Greens checkered with two grasses make for a ridiculously bumpy mess, lumpy barely covered tee boxes, several rancid animal carcasses on multiple holes, driving range trashed, and litter strewn across the property. Arnold Palmer's name should be removed from the property. According to staff they're currently working on refurbishing the tee boxes and then the bunkers in the spring. Maybe TROON can bring this place around again. I won't be returning anytime soon. Sad to see such a gem of a course falling apart. Apparently the owner is unwilling or unable to fork over the Necessary funds to properly maintain the facility. I hope he sells it and opens up a put put course. Sounds like that's a better fit for him since there's no maintenance involved with one.
