Franklin Canyon Golf Course

Played On 03/23/2016Aerated Greens and Tee Boxes
Golfnow had a warning (exclamation mark) next to tee time, but no information about why the mark was there. We didn't find out that the tee boxes and greens had been aerated (and greens covered with sand), until we arrived. Also no warning that the driving range and snack bar were closed. The staff provided a discount for playing, and were apologetic. Course was in good shape, and other than a few wet spots the course was fairly dry 36 hours after rain. The sandy greens were heavy and slow, and playing cart path only turned the round into 5 1/2 hours. The rough was 3-4 inches and heavy, applying a severe penalty if you were off the fairway. At the turn, we noticed the driving range and food service was open. The weather was great (70 degrees, 5-10 mph wind). I will return when the rough is lighter and the greens heal.

Arrived early for a 9:45 start. Clear 55, light breeze. Two days after moderate rain. Signed in and the staff offered an early start since there was no waiting. Went to the driving range, which was not crowded. A little practice on the putting green. Excellent condition. The course is relatively flat, a little long, and has not totally recovered from drought. Thin and bare fairway spots. The greens are excellent. Usually sloped, but not much undulation. Many tee shots plugged, due to the softness of the fairways. One temporary green (I think it was the 11th). The course will probably play better with 5 or more dry days preceding your round.

Mid day start on a weekday. Light traffic on the course. Greens were good, a little fast. Drought has effected the condition of some fairways. Bare spots are harder to play from. Lots of slopes and contour require adjustments to club selection. Hazards are unforgiving. Doglegs make the course more challenging. Setting up approach shots is rewarded with lower scores. I plan to play again.
Mare Island Golf Club
Played On 09/13/2015Excellent day to compete with NFL opening day.
Several two and threesomes in front and behind us. Pace of play was never an issue. 82 degrees at start time. Only windy on the higher holes. Wind effected play on three or four holes. Elevated tees added to enjoyment and challenge. Brown patches on fairways, but the greens were in fantastic shape, although very fast. Food was great. We caught Happy Hour at the turn ($3 Well drinks). OB's are unforgiving. Tried to hit out of a lie near blackberry bushes. They drew blood. We will definitely return.

Booked 2 for 1 PM Sunday start several days in advance. Under $50 to play. Wedding at the location, parking was still available. Paired with another twosome. The course played slightly challenging, mostly due to wind from the west off the bay. Greens were bumpy (match partner said they'd been micro-plugged recently), making longer putts more difficult, but in very good condition. The restricted areas didn't come into play. Fairways in good shape considering drought. The pace was OK. We finished in 4:45.

Busy course. Foursome in front played at a leisurely place. Out at 11 AM, in close to 3:45. Good condition, not a lot of water hazards on the course. Most fairways were relatively straight, with two or three sand traps near the green. A couple of sharp doglegs.
