Horrid Pace of Play

I’ve played Antelope Hills at least 14 times in the past several years during our annual June trip to Prescott.
Each year it seems the Golf Course Management is becoming more interested in maximizing filling tee box usage capacity than providing players with a good round experience.

When we played Sunday, 31 May 2020 as a 2-some, there was a 5-some in front of us. Never once asked us to go through. We waited 5-10 minutes on every hole every shot. There was a Ranger who stopped by to “chat” with them for 5 minutes on one of Par 3 tee box. When it was our turn on the tee box, I asked the Ranger why they were allowing 5-some groups on the Course. He said it’s allowed. They don’t show up on the tee-sheet (max is 4), but after they pay the Pro-shop they can form their own groupings. On this very same day, we saw at least three other 5-some players in front of them, one even walking. Who knows how many others are out there on the two Course, North and South. The Ranger said it was not against their Policy to allow players to form their own 5-some pairings. As a note, there were three 2-some players behind us. We asked the group behind us to join us but declined they wanted to just play “casual “ golf, I.e. hit several balls.
We should have finished in less than 4 hours, it took us 5 1/2 hours on the round.
Beware of long rounds Management allows 5-some groupings. And no required pairing of 2-some. Just been forewarned.

First Class Golf Course

I've been a fan of Dove Mountain well before WGC Accenture Match Play began 14 +years ago and since they left.
Every time I'm there I remember how the Top 64 Golfers in World played their shots. Even when it snowed there during third round of WGC Match Play.
Beautifully maintained tee boxes and fairways. Few Greens were showing some sign of wear but overall they were in very good shape. Greens are small and sloped and falls off like US Open greens. Bunkers are abundant and strategically placed for all playing abilities, so you will eventually be in several fairway and green-side bunkers during your round. Various Tee boxes are available for all skill levels, Blue tee box will test even the very best of the single digit players. But, well worth the challenge it provides. Good for your humility and levels all off egos.
The Practice Range and Putting Green are as good as they come, and Staff is excellent. Carts come with their Course GPS. Its even designed so it won't let you drive close to the Greens. Smart technology at work.
All around a great 1st Class experience, just don't expect to play to your handicap. And you will thorough enjoy the layout, its view of the Mountain and abundant Sahuaro cacti. By the way DO Not go looking far for a stray ball, especially this time of season into Fall; Diamondback rattlesnakes are now out and even worse watch for those Jumping Cholla's. Consider you've been forewarned.
Enjoy !

Overseed of Greens did not take well.

Sadly to give this review, but Canoa Ranch overseen of the greens did not go well. There over half of their greens are showing bad and bare spots that the rye seeds never germinated. Personally, I don’t think it’s fault of their greenskeeper, but due to the untimely heavy rain from Mother Nature the week of overrseeding. It looks like seeds were washed away in large places by the rain, because there are no grass growth, So, it was disappointing to see and putt on the greens, I hope some interim repairs can be done to fix the unfortunate condition. Otherwise golfers will have to endure the damages on many greens fir remainder of new season.

Course has some nice views of Red Rock cliffs. The new back nine has a nicer layout and views than from nine. Greens cannot be read. Trust that most everything breaks away from the cliffs. Couple holes that will not be the case, but overall expect more break than the eyes tell you. And rough can eat you alive. If you can play to your handicap you've done well.

Your feedback on Red Rock cliffs on the course can really help a first-timer. The views are spectacular and the greens tend to break away. Thank you for golfing with us!
