Royal/Sabal at Grand Palms Golf & Country Club
Played On 12/11/2018An off-beat but enjoyable round
Couldn't resist a $20 GN tee time, and glad I didn't. The course was well maintained, if a little soggy. Fairways tight, bunkers perfect and consistent, and greens a little scruffy (snowbird tracks; it's high season), but rolled true with fairly subtle breaks.
The three nines feel a bit tight, but they're long enough. Lots of water but decent landing areas. Unusual number of long par threes and short fours, and some blind tee shots that bear studying (before hitting away.)
Omni Amelia Island Resort - Oak Marsh
Played On 08/07/2018A slice (pardon the expression) of golf heaven
A lovely course in an idyllic setting. A few forced carries and intimidating greens, but overall not too much of the Pete Dye-ishness that elsewhere causes railroad-tie-a phobia. Friendly staff, great practice facilities, and overall well kept but not too fussy. Put it together with a great Golf Now price and it made for a pretty near perfect morning.
The Biltmore Golf Course
Played On 11/08/2017Always a pleasure
Always a pleasure to play Biltmore; especially if you like the old classic courses. There's not a railroad tie in sight, good shots are rewarded, bad ones not, and when the wind picks up, as it does most days, the course shows its teeth.
Crews are still picking up from Irma, so there's a little more work going on and unfinished landscaping then one might prefer, but it doesn't interfere with play.
Thank goodness for GolfNow; even for this beauty I'm not paying rack rate in the high season.....
The Club at Emerald Hills
Played On 11/05/2017Great course, but needs some attention
A great layout, requiring accuracy and thoughtful play. Staff were friendly and easygoing, but there were no rangers (we didn't see a single one) to maintain pace of play. Our front nine was seriously derailed by a foursome including three rank beginners and no etiquette whatsoever. Having skipped the tenth, pace was fine.
The other issue was that greens were pretty chewed up and painfully slow.
Still, worth the effort.
Miccosukee Golf & Country Club - Dolphin Course
Played On 11/01/2017Not bad, but....
There's a lot to like about Miccosukee; interesting and difficult layout (especially when the wind blows, which it usually does), decently maintained greens, fairways and rough, decent staff, and a 19th hole that's nothing fancy but consistently good and a bargain. The one glaring exception is the bunkers, which even days after rains are hard-packed and inconsistent.
Pricing could also be better (it would be nice to see a senior rate again), especially since there are so few places to play in SW Miami Dade.

Always a pleasure to play this classic, particularly when you can find a hot deal tee time (this one at $40!)
Like many Florida courses, the wind is its principal defense, though the ample bunkering and water in play on many holes will keep you honest.
