A gem of a course

This course was amazing. Greens were fun and challenging, Fairways and tee box's were in great shap. This course challenges you to think your way around the course. You can't just bomb it with the driver. Lots of risk vs. reward shots. I will return to this jewel.

Very fun course to test your skill.

This course is a fun but challenging course. The fairways can be somewhat narrow, but very playable if you get into the rough. The staff are amazing. Very polite and professional.

Poorly Maintained!

I played this course on Friday July 17th & 18th. With two others. We traveled from Tazewell Va. To play here in a High School reunion Tournament.

The first day's play was terrible, due to the condition of the course. The Fairways grass were so high that sometimes we could not find our balls that were IN the faiway!! Greens were very bumpy. Sand traps were in VERY bad condition as well. Sand had not been raked in a very long time and actually had gravel/pebbles in them. Course definitely has inadequate drainage which left many places in the fairway and rough that were so saturated that your balls would plug from the tee with Driver. Walking in the soggy mud and water was not pleasant for any of us. Fairway grass was a minimum 4" in hight with rough 8", Tee box's were approximately 2.5"-3". This is just not acceptable for a $40 Greens Fee.

We returned on Saturday to play in the Tournament and the course was in no better condition. Grass was not mowed any shorter. Pace of play is awful for the simple fact that after every shot you spend several minutes looking for your ball in the entirely too high fairway grass.
I asked a twosome if they played there regularly, they said they play there occasionally but play mostly at other area courses but play there for a change. I asked them if the condition of the course ie: grass hight was the norm, or just a fluk? The responded by saying " sometimes it is, and once in a while it's mowed lower but not often." So much for a benefit of a doubt.

The trash that was laying around the course and in, and sometimes around the trash cans next to the Tee's were not picked up from the day previous. It really is a shame. The course does have some pretty holes and elevation changes. There are many blind shots that I'm not a fan of though. Most of the greens are large with a few small greens thrown in. The greens have ridges and levels to keep it interesting.

In conclusion we will never return to this course again. There are too many quality courses in and around Beckley that are SO MUCH better than this with comparable greens fee's. As far as the range the mats are worn out and missing the rubber tee's. Some have them but most do not. Price per bucket $7.50 for a large bucket was good value but range balls are definitely what you'd consider "shag bag" quality.

This is the first negative review I believe I've ever written on a golf course. It's a pure shame.

Everything I was expecting from Glade Spring.

I had worked here in 91-92. I learned the game of golf on the Cobb Course, So I am no stranger to the resort. However I moved away from the area until recently. Have been wanting to come back and try the new courses that they have built since then. WOW! What else can one say. The Stonehaven Course was superb even in the poor weather in which my group played. The condition of the greens and fairways were second to none. Even in the poor weather we still enjoyed our experience and had a wonderful time. The Pro in the shop was very knowledgeable and polite. The staff were professional and courteous. I can't wait to go back for a rematch.... Thank you Glade Springs for keeping up the Top Notch Tradition....
