South/North at Fernandina Beach Municipal Golf Course
Played On 04/09/2024Not Bad
I would love to play this course more often. I've been reading ads re: how this course is in great shape after years of not being in great shape. Take my word for it, the course is as it was, and has been, for over a decade. It has not changed one bit. Terrible tee boxes, terrible greens covered in small growths of weeds (or whatever), and the fairways are semi-good (lots of dirt areas, lots of rough, needing more work grass, etc.). Saying that, I believe that this is a fairly standard municipal course. But they should sell 9 of the 27 holes thay have and make this a great 18 hole muni.

Played On 04/18/2023Slow Play
This is a great course, but there are 2 main issues:
1) Slow Play - over the past several months the play has been seriously slow, a week ago it took 4 hours and 52 minutes to complete a round. The main drawback here is that the course rangers, when there is one, do nothing about it. Nothing. One of them says that everyone is moving along, when they are not. Ready golf is the key here, and many of the golfers do not practice it. This past week we waited on every shot on the front 9, and there were 2 holes open in front of the group. The ranger, filling divots, didn't do anything about it when we complained on # 7. At the turn they went for food and we got on #10 before them and there was no one in front of us for the entire back 9.
2) Cart placement on par 5s 13 and 18. Not this week but last week and many other weeks before, golfers chip to those greens then leave their carts in front of the greens. This leaves the group behind them having to wait on their 2nd shot while they putt then walk back to their carts. This is an unprofessional and dumb act. Especially on 18 since golfers are putting their gear away, etc. The course should make sure somehow that golfers know this beforehand.

Everything was great except the ball cleaners - no water, and this has happened several weeks in a row. Maybe it's just Tuesdays, not sure, but they need to remove the one inch of filthy water and put in about a quart of fresh water everyday.
Hello, nbkdc68. Thank you for visiting us at The Amelia River Club. We appreciate your 4-star rating and review. We hope you join us for another round soon.
South/North at Fernandina Beach Municipal Golf Course
Played On 06/01/2021Poor Maintenance
This course could be so much more if it was maintained properly, even on the North which was redone recently. Let's start with the Tee boxes - sad, very sad, dirt, very little grass, some aren't even very flat, (almost convex). The tee markers are haphazardly placed. Some greens are OK, some have very little grass, some have huge circles of deterioration. Some fairways are OK, and playable, but a lot are in terrible condition. Hit a great drive and to find your ball sitting in dirt - not good.

We play this course once or twice a year, just to see if it's still as bad as the last time, and it was. The West had good grass on the fairways, not so the South. But the fairways need to be mowed, the grass was way too long. Some of the tee boxes looked like a herd of cows trampled through them. We played the West in good time, but then onto the South where there was a 4-some, and 2 were teaching the other 2. It was horrible, and since we were now a 2-some (the other 2 decided not to play another 9), and they would not let us through. We finally left the course after the 6th hole on the South. No rangers to keep it moving, dirt on the South fairways, etc, etc. Get rid of one of the 3 9's, sell some land and make it a great 18 holer.

Love this course. Sometimes though it's OTHERS that take away from the overall experience. Over the past several years we have seen this so many times that we think the owners should take some minor action..
Why do golfers park their carts in front of the greens while they're putting? It happened during this round 3 times. First - #6, they played a shot about 30 yards from the green, on the left, then left the cart there while they went and putted. We couldn't hit until they sauntered off the green. Next, # 13, they played a shot from the right and left the cart 40 yards from the green while they putted, again we couldn't hit until they walked off, slowly, cleaned their clubs, and drove off. The worst is # 18, both carts (3-some) left right in the middle of the fairway, this time about 50 yards from the green, and anybody who's played 18 knows that your 2nd shot is critical over the ditch. This 3-some slowly walked off, talking about their round, cleaned their clubs, took their time, then drove off. #18 is the hole where this has happened many, many times. No golfer should ever leave their cart there. Simply drive around to the other side. There's a way to stop it - just put a small sign on the carts. let everyone know that they are holding up play by parking in front of specific greens. It's basically impossible to park in front of most of the greens, due to NO-CART signs and curbs, except for #5, #6, maybe #9, #13, and most of all #18. Thanks, we'll keep coming back tho.

Played On 09/01/2020A good round
This course has always been a good one, in spite of cheaper, relatively good courses nearby. Today we had no discourteous Slow-mos in front of us, thank goodness. Pace of play was very good even though we had some ladies and an older gentleman in front of us. They were excellent, courteous and knew the rules of play. So thanks for that.
Thank you for your review, nbkdc68. We will pass along your positive experience to our team at Amelia River Golf Club. We look forward to seeing you again soon.

Played On 08/11/2020Great Course, BUT
Once again we were in back of the same, older foursome that we were behind several weeks ago. This time they were not as slow as before, but they were slow, At several points there were 3 groups waiting on the tees. so everyone in my group and the 2 groups behind us simply waited on them. But here's the thing, these guys played like they had a $10 Nassau (they didn't), they would mark their ball even if it was a foot from the hole, they were disrespectful of the cart protocols, they talked on the green after putting as if they had no one in back of them, and on several, and especially the final hole, they would have a 50 - 70 yard chip shot, and they would leave their cart there, go putt out then walk back to their cart, Total discourteous behavior. Especially that last hole, their carts were in the fairway, 60 - 70 yards from the green, rather than behind the green, on the cart path where they belong. Consequently, after they were done and chatting away, they slowly walked back to their cart, and we had to wait for them to clear before we could hit to the green. Pure ignorance. And the course management should make sure every golfer knows that rule. They teed off at about 10:10.

Played On 07/21/2020Great, BUT
Love this course, but a member and 3 of his buds were in front of us from hole 11 onward. There were 3 holes open in front of them and we were a twosome. They would not let us through and they played as if they had a $10 Nassau working. We never said or acted as if we were bothered, but they acted as if they were the only ones on the course. They were deliberate, ignorant of golf etiquette, and even within a foot of the hole, they marked their ball, then putted out after the others putted. There was also 2 groups in back of us stacked up, all due to the discourteous golfers in front of us. Please tell your members to be aware of their place and the backups they cause.
Hello, nbkdc68. Thank you for reviewing the course. We apologize for the delay of play during your round. This is by no means the standard we strive to achieve. We are working to best control pace and allow everyone to finish in a reasonable amount of time. We will continue to look for ways to improve. Thank you for playing Amelia River Golf Club. Played On 10/10/2017Not Bad
The only, and I say only, issue is that on the back 9 we ran into a 2some, ahead of them a 4some, and ahead of them a 5some. Very slow on the back, waited every shot. 5 players is a bottleneck, and we hope the course doesn't condone it.
South/North at Fernandina Beach Municipal Golf Course
Played On 10/22/2016Course Was Ib Good Shape
Not bad for a course that gets a lot of play and a lot of criticism. After all the rain we've had, the grass on all of the fairways (West/North), seemed very nice and adequate. There were not a lot of golfers around, which is unusual for a Saturday. Also, do not get the hot dog. One of the worst ever, nitrates galore, too big, and the bun was sandwich style (never good for a dog). Bring back the good dogs, small in nature, excellent meat, etc., and never cut the bun all the way through.
The Amelia River Club
Played On 12/27/2012Open, challenging, well maintained course
Good course, no homes around it, but also NO RANGERS. Yesterday we were behind 4 of the slowest golfers in the world. The had at least 3 holes open in front of them and would not call us through. A RANGER is needed to keep the play moving along. Also, at least 2 of these golfers hit multiple tee shots on several holes, hit into almost all water hazards, and destroyed our games while waiting on them to putt out.
