Fun, strategic course playing through and along marshland

This is a highly enjoyable course. It has the good strategic features and variety that I've seen on a number of Nicklaus courses. The holes on the back nine out on, into, and along the marshes give a great scenic experience. Other than having a massive tree right in the middle of the 9th fairway, which is one of the nuttiest things I have seen regarding playing a golf hole, the course is filled with good risk-reward options. The fairway width is fair with areas to play away from trouble usually, and the greens have good slopes and undulations. The two par-3s from the bridge over the marshes are a bit do or die. It's a nice walk other than some green to tee treks. Definitely a top-tier course and fun to play.

Bold and fun!

I played True Blue and Caledonia in the same day. Maybe because Caledonia gets more acclaim that I wasn't expecting so much, but I loved True Blue, maybe even more than Caledonia. They are quite different: Caledonia is a tighter layout with a beautiful scenic environment. It's holes are strategic but in a way that blends wonderfully throughout the property. True Blue is big and bold, with big features and wider hole corridors that time and again make you think about how to play the hole.
Caledonia is a bit more target golf with the playing strategy apparent on most holes. They bend and roll and the variety is good. True Blue has more visual deception and risk-reward options. True Blue is also a pretty course, but Caledonia is amazing in that regard. True Blue has more very long green to tee distances if you are a walker.
The green sites on both are very fair. You generally have a preferred open angle in from one side or the other, except for shorter holes meant to be attacked with a short iron. The greens have interesting slops and tiers but are not severe. These are two great courses.

Very nice, great conditioning, repetitive greens and lacks enough distinguishing golf features

The course is pretty and the conditioning is excellent. The hole lengths have good variety. Fair amount of width off the tee but a good number of holes have water right in play. It's a nice layout but it seems repetitive after a while, especially the green sites. Other than the par 3s they all seem to be elevated with bunkers front left and right. There are a handful of very nice memorable holes with good features, but quite a number are straightforward and nondescript. The course is conservative in its presentation. And I like when water features on a hole without being too intrusive or overwhelming. This course has a lot of water in do-or-die setups. It's a good course that feels big. It has lots of long green to tee distances for those who want to walk it. I would give it 3-1/2 stars due to the soundness of the course layout and great conditioning.

Wonderful routing, terrific greens, and good variety

I really enjoyed this course. The layout is routed beautifully off the mountainside making great use of the elevations and property features. There is a good variety of long and short holes. The greens are great, with nice slopes, ridges, false fronts, and are tied into the surroundings. Most have a opening to run shots up but are protected through slopes or bunkers on one side or the other. Some nice dogleg holes are used and some pretty views of the mountains play into the experience. Although trees are located throughout, you never feel confined off the tee and you have plenty of room. A top-notch experience.

Enjoyable course, nice variety and layout

This is a very nice property and a good layout, using the nice amount of elevations and drops well. Hazards are smartly placed and the challenge is fair but not too challenging. The holes run through lots of trees. Fairways aren't narrow but wayward tee shots can get lost. The greens have very good slope and mounds and are pretty quick. They usually have a bunker on one side or the other and open fronts. There is also a creek that runs through many holes that play into decision making on carries. Variety is good too, with a number of long par-4s and short par-4s and short and long par-3s. Most of the course and hazards are visible and in front of you, but there are some nice spots with blind shots. A good course to play if you are in the area.

Great setting, good layout, poor conditions

If this course was in better condition it would easily be four stars. The setting is beautiful, and not just the water views. The natural landscape is terrific and the layout does a great job weaving through the features. Unlike other Trent Jones courses, the holes are strategically laid out with staggered hazards, greens open from one side or the front, and nicely shifting fairways. The property also has nice elevation changes here and there and good variety of hole lengths. It is very windy which often affects club selection. The biggest drawback was the conditioning. The tee boxes were like some bad muni's, and the greens were a bit choppy. But overall a fun play.

High end, second shot course

This is a beautiful course with a high-end, luxury feel and excellent conditioning. Mostly wide off the tees and strategically well placed hazards for approach shots. It's not on the water but there are lots of ponds. They don't choke the holes however. Many greens are nicely placed beside rock formations. There are nice variety of hole lengths and fairway movement. The greens have some movement and slope but nothing excessive. Carts are a must as there are long distances from greens to tees. Overall, a good fun course.

A good solid muni course with Trent Jones features

Eisenhower White is a better than expected muni course. Most greens are large, pushed up and have bunkers left and right (typical of Trent Jones courses). The fairway corridors are fairly open with some trees but not overbearing. There is significant mounding between holes and the course has substantial bunkers in the faces of mounds and pot bunkers. The greens have some really good slopes and some ridges. The holes are fairly straight but the fairways weave through mounds and bunkers nicely. There is good variety in the hole lengths too. The course is also easy to walk. Not the most memorable or spectacular course but a good, solid, enjoyable round of golf.

Ok course, basic

The course is ok and has a few interesting holes but otherwise is nothing exceptional. It does have a number of elevations and big drops. The holes are otherwise simple straight back and forth. The greens are decent with some movement and in good shape. I could lean between a 2 and a 3; Not bad if you are right nearby but not worth a trip to play.

Good layout with lots of fun holes

This is a fun course to play. The design feels old school with decisions on how to play, strategic hazards, and good contoured greens. The template holes are based on the classic ones but much simplified. The Road Hole here is oddly a par 5, and while it has a good green wrapped around a deep bunker, it doesn't have the false front or the hazard behind like other road holes. The Biarritz is well done but much narrower than the others I have played. The Redan is a reverse redan but the green doesn't throw the ball front to back like classic redans. That said, it doesn't matter because for what this course is, it is good and the holes are fun to play. It is an easy walk with most tee boxes right near the greens (except for 9 to 10). Some holes are tight and/or some tee boxes are right in the danger zone of incoming shots from the previous hole. There is some good elevation and use of ponds without them being too penal. There are also a nice variety of long and short holes. Conditioning was just ok. I would happily play this course again.

Excellent course and strategic design

Pound Ridge is one of the top public courses in the immediate NYC area. I contemplated giving it 5 stars because it is so very good. The course has lots of undulation and elevation and great scenic views and aesthetics. The greens are terrific with slopes and contours. They usually have a preferred open angle in. The hole corridors for most holes are decently wide but if you miss you are in trouble. The fairways are mostly fair but use visual tricks to seem narrower than they are. The narrower fairways are smartly on the shorter holes. The one negative to me was the lackluster closing holes. Those last few holes are long and narrow and a step down from the previous 15 holes you just played. The course has some terrific blind shots, a handful of greens pushed up to ponds, and very good conditioning. A great thing about this course is it makes you think off the tee. The angles and hazards are smartly placed for risk reward choices. The course is walkable for the fit given the elevations, but with a few spots of long green to tee walks.

A good course with nice waterside holes

This is a better than average course. I reviewed once with 4 stars and now 3 which is about right (3-1/2 stars). It has good variety on length of holes, nice fairway movement and doglegs on a number of holes, and some really nice water holes. What holds it back is just ok conditions, flat land for the entire course, not a lot of contour to the greens, and a handful of unmemorable holes. But it is a nice step-up from your average muni.

Ok course with highly repetitive greens

The course has a decent enough if somewhat boring layout, absent a handful of interesting holes with some doglegs. Most others are straight and mostly flat with bunkers off the fairways. But the problem is that it seems like every single green is the same thing- elevated with big bunkers front left and front right with high faces. By the 12th or 13th one in a row with the same thing, it detracts. And the greens are quite simple, some minor slope but not much else to them. Conditions were pretty good. If the greens had more variety I would give three stars.

Nice layout, large-scale bunkers, lots of construction

The course has good bones from a layout and strategic viewpoint. It has a nice variety of holes. It has water in play and some punitive pinched landing areas. Playing right at the base of the mountains is cool. The course conditions were not great and there is massive construction happening all around the course. It is not very walkable. It is a fun course and with better conditions and after all the construction is done, it could be 4 stars.

Excellent course and top notch overall experience

The course has a beautiful setting, is on a good property with nice movement and elevation. It has good variety of length and direction. The greens have nice slope and some ridges and undulation. Water is in play an a number of holes but otherwise the playing corridors are fairly wide. The course is not walkable due to long distances from many greens to tees. There are some areas that look manufactured, particularly the waterfalls, but it is all nicely done. The bunkers have a relatively hard sand. The course conditions were very good and the wind was strong the day I played. It is a terrific course and just below a 5 star level.

Fun waterside course with good variety

This is a fun course with well-designed strategic holes and water views. The fairways twist and turn smartly, and even though water is often in play you have options to play safe. The course makes good use of cross-hazards and a good mix of distances and greens well suited to the approaches. The bunkering is good with several deep bunkers off the greens (although the sand is not very sandy). Nice width off the tee and easy green to tee transitions. The course is flat, so an easy walk but not much elevation challenge throughout. The greens have subtle slopes and contours. Overall it is an enjoyable round.

A very good muni course

I previously reviewed the course and gave it three stars, but it is worth more so I am reviewing it again to average out to 3-1/2 stars. What I noticed moreso playing it again is how good are the greens. They have noticeable but not overdone slopes and contours, as well as good shaping. The bunkering is also nicely done. This is a strategic layout with good variety.

Fun holes off the bay, otherwise a nice, straightforward regular course.

I played the Blue and Red nines, with the Blue being the one with the holes on the bay. Those have pretty views and a few very cool holes because you are right off the water. Two of the par-3s are notable for the water and views. The Red nine layout was very basic, with lots of straight flat holes back to back. Overall the greens on both were good. They had interesting slope and some challenging bunkering, and were in very good condition. Fairways on both nines are generally flat. Some holes have some blind shots or decisions on carrying water or playing safe. The wind is a factor on many of the holes on the Blue. It's a decent course if you are nearby and want to get out for a round.

Pretty course, good conditioning and decent layout

This is a nice course in good condition, especially the fairways and greens. It is a pretty property. There are lots of tree-lined hole corridors, but they are wide with wide fairways and I never felt tight off the tee. Greens are large and usually very open to running shots up on them, at least from the middle and one side of the fairway. It's a nice walk with some rolls and slope but no severe elevations. The greens have some big slopes and contour, and played fairly slow, which is appropriate based on their movement. It feels like a paint-by-numbers above-average course with very good conditioning and a pretty setting, with decent variety in length and hole shaping. It is a nice course to play if you are in the area.

Good course, nice views, some fun holes

Lido is a good course with some very nice water views. It has a good number of strategic holes that make you think how to play them. Strategic bunker placement and doglegs. It also has a few mediocre holes. Conditioning is just ok. I gave it 4 stars before so 3 now seems right, it's a good 3-1/2. Wind is usually a factor. The course is flat and open, other than water and OB. The greens are mostly elevated and bunkered in front. Lots of mosquitos in the summer. Overall it is a fun, interesting course.
