Crown Park Golf Course
Played On 05/02/2023Nice course a bit outside Myrtle Beach
Course conditions were pretty good the staff was very friendly.. Several holes required some finesse off the tee - you can't always grip it and rip it. The course was full, but pace of play was pretty good. I definitely will be playing here again.
The Challenge Golf Club
Played On 11/05/2020Too many putts!
I played with a couple of my co-workers, and we chose this course because it was in a convenient "mid-way" location, so none of us had to drive too far.
We were teamed up with a single for the day.
The course was in good shape for November. Grass on the fairways and tee boxes was surprisingly green and full.
The layout of the course is decent, but not spectacular. While not extremely narrow, you can find yourself in trouble if your tee shots are errant. Not much water in play, but some very well placed bunkers can catch you.
Greens looked good, but they didn't seem to be consistent with respect to speed. While most were quite fast, there were a couple that were much slower. My entire group found them very difficult to read.
Bunkers were difficult to play from, as the sand was thick, heavy, brown sand, and attempting to play a "normal" sand shot was not practical. I guess we are spoiled by playing courses near the coast where they use a fluffy white sand.
Regardless of how poorly I scored, the course was definitely in great shape for November, and we had a good time.
I would recommend this course to anyone looking for a place to play in the area.
Black Lake Golf Club
Played On 07/04/2019A gem "up north"
Nestled in the "middle of nowhere", near the small town of Onaway, Michigan, you will find a beautiful and challenging layout. We had first available tee times, so pace of play was excellent. I can't tell you if afternoon rounds will be as fast, though. Staff were very friendly and helpful, and the course was in great condition (other than where some people can't seem to repair their ball marks). Carved out if the woods, wild tee shots will hurt you, but the course is not overly narrow. Bring your insect repellent - you are in Michigan, adderall. We played twice during the week, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Barony at Port Royal Golf Club
Played On 01/19/2018Nice course, but i played poorly :-(
Course layout and conditions were great. Staff was friendly and helpful. Greens were fast and true. My short game killed me, but that's not the courses fault. I'll consider playing here again the next time I'm in Hilton Head
Hilton Head National Golf Club
Played On 01/13/2018Great course, cold weather made it empty
The weather was pretty chilly and Breezy so I pretty much had the course to myself. Conditions of the course were very good for January, and of course layout is nice. Although shot placement in Club selection is important, this course doesn't provide an overly punishing set of Hazards if you aren't on your best game. Greens were in fantastic condition, rolled true and fast.
Carolina Shores Golf & Country Club
Played On 09/16/2015Showing some age, but uncroweded and inexpensive
First, I chose this course because of good reviews and a great price on GolfNow ($34 after tax and fees). I now understand why the price was as low as it was.
First, the good: The course layout is nice, with lots of doglegs that require a bit of shot placement (but not requiring pinpoint accuracy). Some of the holes are a bit narrower than I like, but I was having an off day with my drives, so that might not bother others. Staff were very friendly and really made you believe they appreciated their business. Pace of play was phenomenal (because the course wasn't crowded at all).
Now, the bad: Old, nondescript clubhouse, with essentially nothing available for sale - I needed some taller tees, but they only had one size. Make sure you have all the equipment you need before you show up here. Cart paths were in terrible shape, partly due to tree roots, but also due to neglect. One even had a sink hole at least two feet deep. Fairways were adequate, but definitely not plush. Rough was pretty much weeds, with lots of bare spots. Greens were somewhat bumpy, and slower than most courses in the area. Many tee boxes were nearly bare. It really feels like they are doing the least amount of maintenance possible in an effort to keep from going bankrupt.
Also - if you expect to drink while playing golf, don't expect a beverage cart here - get your drinks at the turn. I don't consider this a negative, since I normally bring my own water, but if it's hot, and you aren't prepared, you're going to get thirsty.
Having said all that, I still had fun playing here, and was quite pleased with the friendliness of the staff. They really appreciate your business and want you to come back.
Play this course for a quick 18, at much lower prices than some other courses in the area.
Sandpiper Bay Golf & Country Club - Sand Nine
Played On 09/15/2015Played the Sand and Bay Courses
We got a very good rate from GolfNow, and went out as a twosome. We had a single player matched up with us, and we played as a threesome. The course wasn't jammed, soace of play was very good, and we seldom had to wait for the group in front of us.
The Piper course was closed for renovation, so we played the sand course for the front nine. Greens were in good shape, and rolled fast and true. Fairways and tee boxes were also in good shape for mid September.
The second nine was played on the Bay course. Once again, fairways and tee boxes were good, but the greens had recently been sanded, which was an irritation, but they still ran true (just not as fast).
Neither nine was overly narrow, but they do punish wild hooks/slices, with plenty of trees and some out of bounds. This is not a course where you have to be pinpoint accurate with your drives, though.
We didn't eat at the course, so we can't say if the food was good, but they did have a beverage cart that made regular rounds, so we didn't go thirsty.
If you are looking for an immaculate, extremely challenging course, this isn't it, but at around $36, it's definitely worth the money spent (and better than a lot of similarly priced courses)
Eagle Nest Golf Club
Played On 09/14/2015LOVED this course!
Great price through GolfNow, for a course that is a hidden gem, in great condition!
Don't let the road into the course fool you - there are two entrances, and the one we took felt like a country farm road going into the middle of nowhere, then suddenly, there's the parking lot for the course.
We played as a twosome, and flew through this course in about 3 hours. While we were first off the tee, it didn't look like there were many golfers behind us. (Perhaps because it was early Monday morning).
This is an older course, but it is VERY well maintained. Tee boxes, fairways, and rough were in great condition. Greens were beautiful and rolled as true as any we have played. I've played courses that cost twice as much that weren't in this good of shape.
The course layout is fun, especially the last couple of holes, which are billed as the toughest finishing holes on the Strand (although I don't think that's true anymore). You do have to make some good shots here to score. While it's not sadistically narrow like some courses, getting too far off the fairway may land you in "tree jail", as the course has lots of mature trees.
Staff are welcoming and friendly, clubhouse is well stocked. We didn't use the snack bar, so I can't comment on that aspect.
If you are in the area, and not anxious to pay big bucks to play a big name course, Eagle Nest is definitely worth playing!
Bear Creek Golf Club
Played On 01/16/2015This course pales in comparison to Jack's Long Bay course
The pros:
1) Course was in decent shape for winter golf.
2) Pace of play was great (naturally - it was a winter weekday)
The cons:
1) This course is not anything special. Compared to the Jack Nicklaus designed Long Bay (near Myrtle Beach), you might even say this course was a let down.
2) The 18th hole was a very nice hole, but that's about it. There were no other holes with any character, and nearly all the greens were flat, so the course isn't that challenging, even for a duffer like me. .
3) Greens were a bit spotty, but that can be expected in January.
4)Back nine seemed to be a little tighter than the front, but not really any problem.
In summary, this is just an average course. I thought Hilton Head was supposed to feature upscale courses, this one is not.
The Reserve at Orange Lake Resort
Played On 05/08/2014sGotta hit em straight
this course is well maintained, but it is to challenging for someonewho does not hit the ball straight.I ended up playing most of the course with my 5 iron just to keep it in play. If you can hit it straight, you should score well. No real pro shop here. Check in is at the resort's convenience store. Don't expect a luxury experience-just golf on a decent course without spending the $100 they want at other courses. I played in the afternoon, and the course was empty. Played another round at 5 pm, and finished in about 2 hours. My kind of pace. But if you can't hit straight, stay away from this course.
As point of clarification, our course is designed by Rees Jones, not Jack Nicklaus. Also, we are known to have one of the more challenging courses on the Island. Our course record from the back tees is only 68 since our renovation 7 years ago! Thank you for your patronage!
