Pine Lake Golf Club
Played On 05/08/2023Embarrassing Course Conditions
Unleveled tee boxes, Ball is above or below your feet on most tee shots, Fairways are comprised of long leaf weeds that are cut short,, several greens barely had any grass which makes putting nearly impossible. If you’re looking to go out & knock some balls around. A hot deal rate is acceptable. No way on earth should one pay full rate for this course. There’s many other well maintained courses in the area for only a fraction more than this course’s full rates.

Played On 06/16/2021Great Layout
Was in town on business & was searching for a quick short notice round. Called the pro, shop attendant was super friendly & stated “c’mon, we’ll get you out there”. Upon arrival the attendant remained super friendly. The course layout is awesome! A mix of straight & dogleg fairways as well some long challenging par 3’s & elevation changes. Most of the tee boxes were good, a few needed some work. But, all were still very playable. The traps were filled with white sand. The fairways were in excellent condition. My only “gripe” if you will is the greens were super slooooow, putting on shag carpet slow. It appeared the greens had been aerated in recent weeks. . So, the greens should come in, in a few weeks. The back 9 is where the long hitters can shine. Overall the course is definitely worth playing.. I wouldn’t hesitate to play it again.

Played On 04/24/2019My go to course
I live only 30 mins away so I often play here. I would have a guess that I’ve played here 25-30 times in the past 3 years. The course is located within a state park & there’s not a single house. The front 9 takes you through the woods, the back 9 takes around a large Lake Russell peninsula. The layout is challenging but fair. My favorite hole is #5, a double dog leg - par 5. Hole # 5 requires a perfect tee shot...too short, you can’t hit through the dog legs, too long you’re in the traps or woods. All the greens are very tricky because green speed is determined by the exposure to full sun vs partially shaded. The recent reviews mentions weeds on tee boxes & lots of crab grass. I played during that time & I have to agree the crabgrass made putting very frustrating. However, I played here on 4.24.19 and 99% of the weeds & crabgrass have been abated. Only one green had crabgrass & it was very sparse. I’ve played at several HHI & Bluffton courses ranging $ 70 -$90. Arrowhead’s layout & course conditions remind me alot of Dolphin Head GC on HHI. Arrowhead is just as nice as HHI area courses & half the cost.

Played On 05/09/2019Best Condition in Years
I’ve played this course many times over the past 4 years. I played here this afternoon and I must say, It’s in the best shape that I’ve ever seen. 95% of the tee boxes were level, the fairways have grown in & were cut to perfection, the greens look like lush green carpet and rolled smooth and true. However, the greens are a bit slower than I like. Hopefully greens will be cut shorter in the coming weeks to increase the speed. The clubhouse attendant was super friendly. The carts have been replaced & now have USB charges which is great for using a distance app. Since I played on Thursday afternoon (when most people are working), the pace of play was as fast or slow as I choose to go. If you’ve never played here, I urge you to give it a try. But, bring your A game because the elevation changes will definitely test your club selection skills. I’m looking forward to another round here soon.
Pinecrest Golf Club
Played On 05/07/2017Has Potential to be a Great Course
This is a super long course. I do not recommend walking all 18 unless you're super fit.
Difficulty - Course has some blind water hazards and some very well placed fairway bunkers that you must carry or refrain from the driver.. If you don't drive the ball at least 275 yards with accuracy on a consistent basis, it will be like a day at the beach on a few holes. Bunkers surround a few holes. Break out the sunscreen, shovel and buckets if you come up short on the approach. Overshoot the green (easy to do since they're rock solid) and it's beach city USA.
Pros- Most fairways were in okay conditions which allowed a fair roll.
Cons- Several tee boxes and most of the greens need lots of attention. Most of the greens were hard as stone and mostly bare. It's too bad about the conditions because PineCrest has the layout and design to be a very nice and challenging course.
Pace of Play- Tee times seemed to have been scheduled about 15 minutes apart which allows most 4sums to be hitting their 3rd shot before the next group tees off. IMO, the perfect pace of play. Many of the other area courses could learn a thing of two from PC about tee times.
Overall Thought- Pinecrest reminded of a lot of upstate SC courses where most greens become scorched due to mid Summer heat and lack of water.
At this time, I would not recommend to a friend due to conditions. If PC was in upstate, SC; it would be a $25/30 in it's current condition. Since it is in a tourist area of the low country; IMO, it should be a $35/40 course in it's current condition.
Dolphin Head Golf Course
Played On 05/05/2017My Favorite Island Course
I take a few employees/coworkers/friends to HHI every spring for a guys weekend of golf. I booked the round through golf now on April 4th.. My 4some arrived and on May 5th about 25 mins ahead of our tee time. We walked into the proshop to check in and the gentleman became a bit aggravated when I told him that I booked on golfnow. He shook his head & stated "You guys are killing me, we've told golfnow to stop providing noon tee times for today, you're the 3rd person with a noon tee time today; you booked this morning right!?" I was surprised by his attitude, mannerisms & comment because it was totally the opposite of the welcome we received in 2016. I explained that I booked our round on April 4. His attitude immediately changed and he became friendly & helped with beer accommodations. IMO, the gentleman shouldn't have displayed his frustration to guest because guest have no control over the course or golfnow. The course was in just as beautiful condition as it was in 2016. Tee were boxes flat, fairways cut to perfection and the greens were perfect; not to hard, not too soft and they were smooth. Unlike 2016, the pace of play was a bit daunting. Tee times seemed to be assigned about every 7 minutes and multiple 2sums were not paired up to make a 4somes. We had a 3sum and 4sum in front of us and multiple 2sums behind us. This pace of play became cumbersome due to the bottleneck. For my group, It was hurry up and wait all afternoon. It was a mental challenge trying overcome being pushed all afternoon with nowhere to go. Maybe this was a result of a third party and why the gentleman became aggravated when my 4some checked in. My 4sum was relieved when the round was over. Dolphin Head is my favorite island course. From experience we learned that Dolphin Head conditions are the same as one of the $120 courses. To anyone reading this review trying to decide where to play, save yourself at least $60 and play DH instead of one of the pricier courses if you don't mind not having GPS yardage assistance Even after our 2017 experience, we'll be back next year!
Highland Walk at Victoria Bryant
Played On 03/25/2017Dolly Pardon doesn't have elevation changes like this
Due to elevation changes club selection is essential and braking out fairway drivers is a must! Driving the ball from a few of the par 4 hills tops allow long hitters the opportunity to dance or get close to the green from the tee box even at nearly 350 plus yards away. A couple of blind dog legs allow one to make risk vs reward decisions. Take the risk and hit an accurate shot, be handsomely rewarded. Miss the risky shot and you're certain to lose a few strokes on a single hole.
I've played this course several time and the fairways appear to always need some work. The green conditions are hit and miss depending on time of year. There's not very many bunker to worry about. The front 9 is narrow and plays mostly short. The back 9 is wide open and plays mostly long.
HW's price point is great for a day of practice and hanging out with a friend or taking Jr. out to teach him about loft & carry. I would not attempt to walk any of it unless you have some mountain goat in your ancestry.

Great layout , course conditions & friendly staff. Excellent value! Don't allow it being a state park course detour you. This course is in the league of such courses as dolphin head & crescent point in hilton head, sc.
