Dub's Dread Golf Club
Played On 05/29/2022narrow fairways, good conditions both on fairways & greens.
Have you ever looked out your back door, saw your lawn up to 5-6”, and said, ”man, I need to cut that lawn today”
that’s the rough at Dub’s Dread. fairways are cut but very narrow- that makes the course. approaches and greens are in good shape. bunkers are really just dirt. Good value for greens fees, scenic location with notable history. staff & grill staff, all helpful, pleasant. I played from white tees, (Arnie’s), some average length par 3’s and 4’s. under repair 3rd hole, no drive second shot from 118 yards. Course designed by Jug McSpaden, 1960’s; notable rounds by Palmer, Nicklaus Snead & Nelson.
Stonelick Hills Golf Course
Played On 05/29/2021Beautiful, challenging course NE of Cincinnati.
My wife & I are playing golf in all 50 states, ( and possibly all trust territories). Review some of Stonelick Hills were spit on. Well designed by Mr. Osterfeld , and we’ll maintained. We live in NC, and didn’t anticipate this much terrain in Ohio. Amenities and grill were superior. Pace of play on a cold Saturday was fine. Ralph the starter was very pleasant. All in all, a great representation of fine public golf in Ohio.
Quail Ridge Country Club
Played On 12/11/2020Above average Sandhills track.
I don’t recall heavy rainfall in the last 5-7 days. There were a number of soggy muddy areas on fairways. #2,6,12,13,14,, all had fairways that were unplayable. Greens are in dormant, but stable condition. Some fast, others with uphill, undulating green surfaces- that couldn’t be read. Distance, wide fairways and raked traps all were positive attributes. Paced was excellent, our foursome played in under 4 hours. We will play here a number of times this winter.
The Legends at Orange Lake Resort
Played On 02/19/2017Community course within Holiday Inn Express vacation villas
played 2/19- tee boxes and fairways in good shape for mid-winter. Greens: very firm, have that "winter dormant" look and feel, a lot of undulation, and difficult pin placements. Distances, and slope all reasonable, 124-129 for Whites.
usual Florida set up, "hazard on the right, water on the left". Traps well maintained, a number of large hazard areas, not bunkers.
The 4-some ahead needed lessons, shank after shank, slowed down pace and spoils any concentration/rhythm. Some say a "resort course"- this is more a community course for intermediate-term renters and regional guests. Yes, I'd play it again. Bring plenty of ammunition!!
Falcon's Fire Golf Club
Played On 02/18/2017above average public-accessible course.
played 2/18- all aspects of the course in excellent condition. Greens Tiff-eagle and rolled well, some undulations, but overall, excellent. Slope 128 Whites, reasonable. Staff helpful. good distance from bag drop to car parking, unless you drop the additional $10-15 for valet. Course layout very reasonable, good vision of landing areas and hazards. Traps well maintained. Pace of play was very good, on-board GPS range finder makes this a quick study and easy decision making. Played with others who were around Orlando for a while- rated this course highly, in comparison.
Shingle Creek Golf Club
Played On 02/17/2017resort course, above average condition and layout
So, it's Orlando, it's winter and it's a resort.
Don't hit the walkers from the many conventions at Rosen's Shingle Creek who partake of the course at lunchtime.
having said that, this is a moderate to challenging resort course, at a good location. Staff was helpful, parking and bag drop are close by. Slope @ 125-128 Whites after course revamped May-Nov 2016. Greens and bunkers in excellent shape, fairways cut tight and layout was good, landing areas and hazards well noted. GPS in cart is a big help! Par 3's are moderate in distance and hazards. Standard Florida layout: "hazard on the left, water on the right".
Range balls included and practice areas easy to find. Pace of play was very good, (Friday mid day).
Palmetto-Pine Country Club
Played On 2/07/2013Can't move the slider bars (all or none) above. See below
Very nice, and user friendly private course. I didn't need a reciprocal endorsement from my home course Pro to get a tee time.
greens were 11+ fast, top dressed with sand two weeks ago, still very fast. fairways and dorment Bermuda apron and rough were uneven...but that's Bermuda anywhere.
Staff very accomodating, price was reasonable for in season, day before tee time, $87,
All in all, non-resort with very challenging layout. Distances are right on for slope rating.
