Links at Challedon
Played On 06/02/2023Variety of holes
The course was very fair. Greens looked faster then they actually were. Pace of play could be a problem. Holes offered a variety of shots and approaches. They were short on staff in bar/restaurant area.
Barony at Port Royal Golf Club
Played On 10/28/2020Course is very playable
Would have given 5 stars if greens were a little faster. Course appears tighter than it actually is. Only one quirky hole. A lot of holes require carry over water.
Ocean Resorts Golf Club
Played On 07/09/2018Local knowledge a must
Can't beat the price as many courses often charge twice as much and limited tee times especially in the summer months. Pace of play may impact enjoyment. You need a lot of local knowledge. Several severe dog legs and layups in front of unseen water hazards. Most holes are used friendly.
Hilton Head National Golf Club
Played On 09/28/2017Country Club greens
Greens ran true and fast. Easy to short side yourself with raised greens. I rated this course a 5 but it could have been a 1 based on pace of play. Observant ranger noticed our group was behind a group of 12. After playing 1st hole there were still 8 people on 2nd tee. We were allowed to start on back and played at a leisurely pace of 4 hours.
Golden Bear Golf Club at Indigo Run
Played On 09/26/2017Stay out of rough and sand
Tight driving areas. Most greens did not require a carry, unlike most Nicklaus courses. Fair layout. Rough was very penalizing. Sand very wet and hard. A lot of holes had water as an obstacle.
Ford's Colony Country Club - Blackheath Course
Played On 03/24/2017Deceptive. Not as open as it looks
Great demanding course. Plenty of water and deep fairway bunkers narrow your landing areas. Changes in elevation. Lots of holes require a carry unto the green or off the tee. Greens have subtle breaks but need to be maintained a little better.(keeping from rating a 5).
Williamsburg National Golf Club - Yorktown Course
Played On 03/22/2017Greens have to get better to recommend
Courses have a ton of potential. What separates good golf courses are their greens. These had bare spots and were bumpy unlike other courses in the area. Currently under new management and their plan is to upgrade the greens. Unfortunately played front nine of Yorktown which was very fair and wide open. Only a few holes required a carry off the tee. Back nine played Jamestown which was tight, difficult par 3s and local knowledge of dogleg distances.
Harbour Town Golf Links at Sea Pines Resort
Played On 10/26/2015Worth the price
Course had been closed for renovations until September. Fairways played soft and greens were extremely slow. Great test of golfing ability especially with swirling winds. All par 3s required a carry onto the green. Layout involved both long and short par 4s, several doglegs, water hazards and plenty of sand. High handicappers will struggle because greens were small and required a high ball flight to stay on the greens. Bermuda collars made chipping precise. The walk up 18 is very scenic.
Hilton Head National Golf Club
Played On 10/24/2015One of the cheapest places to play
Greens were great. Unfortunately we played in the morning dew and they had just over seeded their greens. Pace of play in the off season was fantastic, less than four hours. Great course for golfers who don't hit a high ball, there were no force carries to any greens. Judging how the ball hits bermuda collars is tricky. Had wide fairways, big greens and several short par 3s. I thought the back played harder and longer than the front. If you stay on the island you may have traffic issues reaching this course during peak season. It would be very difficult to walk this course although between greens and tees the ride was very scenic.
Mulligan's Pointe
Played On 08/03/2015Playing winter rules in the summer
The layout of the course is outstanding. Mostly wooded with water in play on some holes. Greens were in great shape. Fairways, collars, tee boxes, and rough were in poor condition. There are very few 18 hole public courses in lower Delaware and the closer you get to the beach the courses raise their rates ($85 - $150) and are very crowded. If you can get on for under $40 and play winter rules the course is worth playing.
River Marsh Golf Club - Hyatt Chesapeake Bay
Played On 02/04/2015Great course for mid handicap
Several short par 4s. On long par fours and the par fives little to no trouble in front of greens. Holes 17 and 18 are worth the wait. Course was not conducive to walking especially from hole 18 back to clubhouse. Course was in great shape for the middle of winter.
GlenRiddle Golf Club - War Admiral Course
Played On 7/30/2014Choose correct tees
I played from the blue tees about 6300 yds, my playing partner played from the whites which only played about 5800. Must hit a straight tee shot. High handicappers will struggle because several holes required a carry to green. Short par 4s were quirky requiring correct yardage of tee to avoid trouble. Par 5s on back were quirky as well requiring a lay up on tee shot followed by hole opening up on 2nd shot. Greens are fast and small.
River Run Golf Course
Played On 7/24/2013Heat and rain have created poor conditions
Was shocked at the conditions of this course. Played course after a week of temperatures in the 90s. Several greens were simply unplayable and should have been closed. Other greens had damage from mowers. Even a 2 foot putt was an adventure. Too be fair, my playing partner said the course was in excellent condition in early July. The par 3s over water were great. Wouldn't play this course for any price unless you are out for a practice round improving your iron play.
