16th Hole Turtle Point Photo submitted by GalCallaway on 10/05/2014
Turtle Point at Kiawah Island Golf Resort
Played On 09/24/2014Straight Off the Tee is the Key!
I really enjoyed this course which surprised me because I met some golfers the day before I played that said "it was too narrow, unfair, too hard, etc."
I had a great time while playing from the forward tees. Yes, some fairways are narrow but not all of them are "too narrow."
The one hole that was really narrow was the 16th hole (see photo) but it was a lot of fun to play!
I would say if you have a really bad hook or slice you will have a hard time but if you are normally straight off the tee, have a mild fade, or mild draw, you will love this course.
Quail Brook Golf Course
Played On 08/16/2014The right mix of fun and challenging
This is an excellent public course. I like it because it is challenging (the pin placements can be really tricky and the greens fast) but it is fun and the pace of play was great. We finished in 4 hours and 10 minutes on a busy summer Saturday.
I do recommend you ride for 18 holes. The first nine are an easy walk but the back nine is on the other side of the road and so the walk/ride is much longer between holes. However, if you really like to walk ask the locals for the shortcuts.
The staff is great and very friendly and welcoming to women. The head pro is Mike Havay. I took lessons from Mike before I ever played the course, and he is a great golf teacher.
It is a great price. My friend and I were paired with a Pro from Conn. (he as visiting friends in NJ) and he said the fee was really fair given the wonderful condition of the course. If you have a county card the value is even better!
Rainbow Golf Club
Played On 06/07/2014Nice Local Feel to the Course
We decided to do a weekend trip to the Catskills and found the Rainbow Club on a website list of Catskill courses. The website had a pretty view of on island green which is why we picked it to play.
The woman in the pro shop was friendly but the snack area was very dark and not inviting. The carts were older and it just felt like a local muni-course. The island green was disappointing visually (compared to the website photo) but the course was not busy so pace of play was great.
Overall, for $35 with a cart it was a great value and fun but I would not go out of my way to play this course.
Windham Country Club
Played On 06/02/2014Nice course for Women
The course itself was in beautiful condition(we were told by staff the owner just spent 2 million on improvements.)
It is a great course for women because if you are striking the ball well you can reach the green in regulation (which is not true for the newer, longer courses favoring long hitters.)
The big down side is that there are NO signs on the course and no rangers to manage slow play. We were lucky that a very slow group let us play through but I can't imagine how the folks felt that were stuck behind that group. We played quickly once we were ahead of the slow group but I gave pace of play a low rating because of no signs and no rangers.
We were also lucky that when we had a question on where the next hole was on the course, a friendly ground crew seemed to be near by to give us directions.
I do recommend this course for the quality and condition but they need to address the issues that will impact pace of play (no signs, no rangers to move along slow groups.)
Also we at at the pub -- food was good but it was expensive. The town of Windham has a lot of great restaurants and is a 5 minute drive. Have a drink on the deck but go into town for your meal.
the picture looks more like hole #14 on Turtle Point.
