The King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort
Played On 04/11/2017Low Country Gem
My wife and I decided to try a round at the King & Prince Resort on St. Simons Island on a Tuesday afternoon while vacationing there. It's at the North end of he island located in a resort and upscale development of homes that surround the property. The clubhouse is located by a lake on the interior of the property that is picturesque (both holes 9 and 10 play across portions of the lake) and staff is friendly and helpful. The practice range, putting green and chipping area are all adjacent to the clubhouse and hole #1. We had reserved a 3:12pm tee time at $45 rate (including cart) but got there early to look around. As it wasn't crowded at all, the staff allowed us to go off early (1:45) without charging the difference that the earlier time would have cost had we booked it originally. The course was in near perfect condition. The fairways are ample and very well maintained and the greens were in near perfect shape- moderate speed and not overly firm. Fairway bunkers are strategically located and trouble awaits if you miss fairways or greens. There are pretty long distances between some of the greens and next tees, so walking is not an option. Mid week afternoon starting time was a good choice- we saw only one other twosome when we played and they never held us up- we played 18 in 3-1/2 hours even with teeing from different tees, the long cart drives between some holes, taking extra time to putt a second or third time after completing a hole (there was no one behind us) and searching for the two balls that we lost. The views from much of the course are of giant moss oaks and beautiful marshland and the breezes off the water and low humidity in early Spring kept us cool and most of the bugs down. The drive over a series of wooden bridges for Holes #13, 14 & 15, which are on a peninsula surrounded by low country marshland, is memorable. They are among the most beautiful three holes I have ever played- the vistas are so nice you just want to stop and take a picture. But bring a few extra golf balls as these and other holes are surrounded or bordered by marshland. And buy some bug repellant at the pro shop before you tee off! Bottom line.....you should make time to play this low country gem if you visit the Golden Isles!
