George Fazio Golf Course at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort
Played On 07/21/2016Great layout but greens in very poor state
I love this course. I play here almost every year. Fantastic layout but the conditions were at best average. I live in Pittsburgh and for $80, you can play very nice courses in great conditions. Fairways and tee boxes were great, bunkers lacked a little bit of sand so you had to adjust but the greens were sandy, the grass was so long that my putter was moving when I was resting it down and so slow that it was impossible to make anything longer than 10-15 feet without getting lucky. Good luck if you have to put more than 25 feet. Disappointing and it is a shame for this kind of course. I played the 3 courses at Palmetto Dunes this week because they are great layouts, and it is the same story at all their courses. I guess they aerated the greens a month ago but they did not recovered yet. Was the same thing 2 years ago at the same period at the Pines Resort except at the Harbor town course. If you want to play nicely conditioned courses, don't mind to drive 30mn, play outside the island. Still fun though, good pace of play, nice staff and hot, hot , hot.
Arthur Hills Golf Course at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort
Played On 07/19/2016Get ready for a fun challenge. Course conditions not great
Another great layout at the Palmetto Dunes plantation. Fun course to play with friends. Back nine is a little target golf though but the holes are kind of fun. Fairways, bunkers and tee boxes were great. Greens were again very slow and sandy due to aeration or month of the year. They should not charge full price to customers when playing in these conditions. Played for $59 which is great but again I live in Pittsburgh and at this price, you can except the best conditions. I would play again there but you just have to know that the greens are not in great shape at this time of the year , so lower your expectations concerning the course conditions and you will have a great time.
Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort
Played On 07/17/2016Little Jewel on Hilton Head Island
Fantastic layout and not that difficult. Well designed for average golfers. A little pricey though. The course was in great shape except for the greens which were rather slow and sandy. If I had payed full price of $120, I would have been mad. A lot of holes play into the Ocean's wind (against you) especially on the back 9 but generous fairways make up for it. It makes clubs' selection tricky and fun. Only one hole has kind of a view of the Ocean but the course gets its name from the wind. I like this course but it is not my favorite in Palmetto Dunes. I rather play the other 2 because they are more challenging. Fun but don't expect to find great greens this summer. Would play it again though. It is however the best maintained course at the Palmetto Dunes Plantation.
Lenape Heights Golf Course
Played On 06/18/2016Lenape is a mountain course
Good fairwways, bunkers and tee boxes. Nothing bad to say about the maintenance and the reception. Greens were on the slow side though but were receptive.
The layout is rather poor. Short course (about 6000 yards from the back tees). A lot of blind shots from the tees but also when shooting at the greens even from 100 yards away. A lot of approach shots are playing sharply downhill so you have no idea how long the holes play. Also, a lot of short doglegs where drivers is not required, so if you don't know the layout, you might lose a few balls by just going through the fairways. It became target golf for me which I am not a fan. The front is better though.
On saturday afternonns, they have a junior league which is quite big and we got stuck behind it (took a while to finish) but should not be a problem another day of the week. Ask the front desk about it when you reserve.
I guess it is an OK course for seniors and juniors but not for avid golfers. Drove one hour to play the course and was rather disappointed. The layout is just not good enough (too many crazy and goofy holes.)
Meadowink Golf Course
Played On 04/24/2016Nice little course in Muysville
Played there for the first time in many years. The course did not change much. Fairways, rough were in good shape (spring time), greens were rolling nice but a bit slow. Most impressed by the bunkers. I got into 4 of them and all played identically (good amount and quality of sand, which is very rare for a public course). The layout is average (a few blind tee shots) but OK. Will return soon. $35 looks fair for this kind of course with a cart.
Suncrest Golf Course
Played On 06/08/2015Nice course north of Pittsburgh
I play all the time on this course. it is in very good shape except for greens which are bumpy. Speed is good, fairways are good. No bunkers. Little greens. Good pace of play. Course seems easy but trees can mess around with you in a hurry. Tee off line and you will be left with no shot to the greens. It is a nice little course overall. The best after Pittsburgh National lay out in that area. $25-$32 would seem fair for that course if you use a cart.
Birdsfoot Golf Club
Played On 09/09/2013One of the best links course in Pittsburgh
Course in nice shape. Large fast greens but a little bumpy though. Nice fairways, bunkers, tee boxes. Beautiful course. Nothing bad to say. One of my favorites here in Pittsburgh. For $35, it is a must play. Played on a Sunday afternoon during football season. Pace of play was excellent. Play the right tee boxes, and you will have a nice time.
Actually $59 is a really good price for HHI and especially for the PD courses so that's already very discounted. Makes me, however, want to schedule a golf trip to Pittsburgh!
