New Smyrna Golf Club
Played On 04/29/2015New greens keeper/bad choice
After the remodeling by Bobby Weed, the course was in good shape. With the hiring of a very special greens keeper, he got it into fantastic shape...fairways, tees, and greens. Unfortunately he left for an exclusive golf course in the Bahamas and his replacement has run the course into the ditch. The greens, tees, and fairways during his 6 or so months have deteriorated to the point of being unplayable. I do not recommend this course unless you expect the very minimum from a golf course
The Golf Club at Equinox
Played On 09/24/2014Great layout, great setting, great views, fair condition
Having played several of the legacy clubs over the last few weeks, it is apparent that some of them are resting on their laurels and this one is no exception. The routing is dramatic and the numerous elevated tees make for great views, but the conditioning doesn't justify the prices. The tees, fairways, and greens were erratic and the bunkers were unplayable, being mostly rock and having little sand. This is another Troon golf disappointment where I expected better. It is relatively short, however there are many elevated tees making 2nd shots more difficult. The gas carts were definitely on their last legs. Glad I played it but doubt I would play it again unless it underwent a serious upgrade.
Mount Washington at Mount Washington Hotel & Resort
Played On 09/23/2014A course in need of TLC
The layout was interesting and the views, especially with the Fall Foliage, were spectacular, but I was very disappointed in the Troon Golf management of this course. I have played many of their courses that have been in great shape but this is not one of them. The tees were thin, fairways scruffy, and the greens erratic. Many of the women's tees seemed to be an afterthought. The course looked and felt "beat up" and was very disappointing. The traps were basically unplayable. We had the golf package with the Mt. Washington Resort and considering the condition of the course we felt we paid way too much.
Woodstock Country Club
Played On 09/22/2014A gem in Woodstock
The course is deceptively short on the card but requires strategic placement off the tees to score and plays longer than the yardage. Carts do not have GPS. I found this very important for the first time player. The tees, fairways, and greens were in great shape. I found the par 3's very interesting. Definitely a thinking persons golf course with lots of forced carries over water. I highly recommend this course
Fox Hopyard Golf Club
Played On 09/19/2014Worth the drive
Like Crumpin' Fox, this course is tucked away from everything and is worth the trip. 18 distinctive holes, each with it's own character. Great par 3's, 4's, and 5's. There are some blind shots and strategic layups required. Because of the hills, the course plays long and there are enough forced carries to keep your attention. This is a worthy sister course.
Silo Point Country Club
Played On 09/17/2014Golf in the country
Heritage Village is a tricky, short course requiring quite a bit of local knowledge. There are a number of restricted or blind shots and numerous holes that require smart layups. The course was in great shape and was fun to play especially with a GPS and playing with a member. This course is particularly good for senior players and women. Many fairways were very tight requiring precision off the tee.
Gold Course at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club
Played On 09/14/2014Curse you Robert Trent Jones (just kidding)
This was a delightful round of golf and very typical of the RTJ courses that I have played. The Gold tees at 6,500 yards are deceptively long because of the elevation and forced carries and the par 71. The par 3's will keep you up at night but will be your longest memories. The routing is compact, but scenic. It is a very long course for women except for the longest hitters. Bring you A game, or a lot of balls and just enjoy the round.
Sanctuary Golf Club
Played On 09/12/2014An interesting layout needing some TLC
The routing of this course was very interesting with many really good holes. Plenty of forced carries and a feeling of Hilton Head with some narrow driving and landing areas. The tees and fairways were a bit scruffy but the greens were very nice. The card do not have GPS and that would be a requirement to get the most for a round here. All I all a good value for the money.
RedTail Golf Club
Played On 08/05/2014Interesting and Challenging course
We found this course both interesting and challenging for all of the handicaps in our group which ranged from 2 to 25. It is very difficult for short hitting women, as the rough and waste areas are constantly in play and the carries can be very long. Landing areas in the fairways are generous and for the most part, the course lays out in front of the player. The course conditions were excellent, as the tees, fairways, and greens were very well prepared. There were many interesting and varied holes, no two looked alike.
I highly recommend this course as a great test and excellent value
The King and Prince Beach & Golf Resort
Played On 11/21/2013A fun and challenging course
This is my 3rd visit to the King & Prince course and have never been disappointed. The staff, starting with GM Rick Mattox, has been unfailingly pleasant and helpful. The course as a whole is challenging and never boring, but the marsh holes are the stars of the course, since these holes could never be constructed again. This course is definitely worth a visit. The fairways and tees were in great shape, but the greens were a wonderful experience to putt....true and fast. I highly recommend this course and personally will stop for a round whenever I am in the neighborhood.
