Playable and Varied

Friendly staff, variety of holes with few quirky ones, decent condition, four hour pace both rounds, and very reasonable rates. To me, that's golf and all I need. Played only one other Florida course, which was scruffy and FAR too narrow. This one's much better.

Ragged and Narrow

Greens were decent but much of the rest of the course was in fair to poor condition. There are too many artificial holes for my taste and there is often simply not enough golf course. Am decent player but lost many balls. First time in FL but every time I mentioned this course to other golfers they agreed with my assessment. Found a nearby course much more to my liking.

Doglegs and Bunkers

I wish I could be more enthusiastic about this golf course because the greens were excellent. My reservations are that it is mostly doglegs, 12 by my count, and most of the greens are significantly front-bunkered with medium deep traps. It tends to be the same thing over and over, and I prefer more variety in the holes. Many of the doglegs are tee-lined and if you don't make it to the corner or are on the wrong side of the fairway, you often have little or no shot into the green. Much of the course winds its way through lowlands/wetlands, and the turf tends to be a little thick and maybe a little soft and sticky. It plays long, so choose one set of tees shorter than you think appropriate.

Love the Cattail

Cattail is pretty and playable, with lots of green around the greens, but still enjoyably challenging. If you want blind tee shots and approaches and 3 or more tiers per green, play the companion course, Devil's Claw, but make sure Steve Williams is on the bag. That's a no thank you for me.

This is a resort in the middle of the south metro desert. It has beautiful and extensive practice areas. I'm not a big fan of resorts, and I haven't stayed there, but overall this is really well done. Lovely clubhouse, nicely sited.

1950s Flatland

The typography of this course is just what you would expect, and we did: flat. The green complexes have probably been made more interesting over the years, but my main complaint was that so many of the pins were within 3 to 6 paces of the edges of the greens. 6 paces is ok, but 3 is the greenkeeper's way of saying he doesn't want you on his precious greens, even though you thought you paid the fee to do just that. It often results in pins on the drainage slopes. That, together with greens that were less than lush grass-wise made for some frustrated golfers. Putting your ball off the green is not recreational. Pin setters seem more and more to be drinking the same kool aid -- can't we just agree that they can find all the domes and ridges and edges of the greens? C'mon, guys, it's not about you. It ruins an otherwise perfectly acceptable golf course. That was the Orange Tree we played, and it's too bad. In a world of too few golfers, why aggravate them unnecessarily?

Don't Be Fooled

I don't know about Sidewinder, but as for Dinosaur, I recommend that for the same money you should be able to play some other course you like in the Phoenix area 2 or 3 times.

I don't understand what all the fuss over this course is about. The scorecard does not add up the yardages, and the reason seems to be that it has 6 par 3s. There seemed to be weeks of unrepaired ballmarks (dents) in the greens, and at least two-thirds of the pins were on the very edges of the greens, many of which were quite large. As if the game and this course weren't challenging enough already. When I complained to golf course staff about all the edgey pins they said, "We hear that all the time."

And for all this, not to mention a joke of a driving range (mats), they like to get a buck thirty-five or more with seemingly very little discounting. Yes, it's pretty and you get to drive a golf cart through the foothills of the Superstition Mountains, and in fairness it does have a number of very nice golf holes, but to me, overall, this is an overly expensive, very indifferent golf product. They fooled me once. It won't happen again.

Dear Mr. O’Meara,
Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience. I’m glad that you enjoyed the challenge, beauty and hole variety of our Dinosaur Mountain golf course. I'm sorry if some of the hole locations were in difficult positions. We have at least four holes with very undulating greens and it can be difficult to find a perfect hole location 7 days a week.
As far as our scorecard is concerned we removed the total yardage approximately 10 years ago. The reason for this is to promote players to play the "correct" set of tees for their ability. The total yardage on the Dinosaur Mountain course is very deceiving. For instance it measure 6,561 yards from the back tees. Needless to say we had a number of players playing the back tees when in reality they should have been playing the middle tees. So instead of putting the total yardage on our scorecard we replaced it with recommended handicap which has greatly helped our speed of play. We've also added mixed tees that are a combination of tees which are quite popular, challenging and fun to play.
And lastly to address your concern about our driving range. Our driving range was built in 1982 along with 9 holes of golf. The range is bordered on both sides by the Sidewinder golf course and thus it is landlocked. There is no room for expansion. The original grass tee would only accommodate up to 18 stations. After one week of rotation there would be very little if any grass left. We do over 65,000 rounds of golf annually and it would be virtually impossible to grow and maintain any type of turf. With that in mind we have invested over $7,500 in the best artificial golf mat on the market which turned out to be the best possible solution for our scenario. Ballybunion rated one of the best courses in the world does not have a grass driving range but rather artificial mats and Lahinch also rated one of the top courses in the world does not have a driving range at all, just a practice putting green and chipping area.
Thank you again for your comments and I hope we were able to address your issues.

Carnival greens

Very slopey green s with lots of ridges. Way too much break. They tried to make up for very flat terrain by souping up the greens. Instead of making them interesting they made them repetitive and annoying.

Wanna have fun?

OK, everybody knows Sun City West is hard to get to, takes forever and isn't scenic. I still think Trail Ridge is a most enjoyable golf course, and I'll keep looking for the northwest passage to make getting there tolerable.

Why? Billy Casper. Really nice greens. Interesting holes that don't leave you feeling beaten with a 2 by 4. But you can lose a ball there and be in jail. It's all a matter of taste, but I like to feel like if I play well I can score well, and I do at this course. The clubhouse has "muni" written all over it so if it's chic you want go elsewhere. Decent driving range and near-empty parking lot because most patrons drive their golf carts over. But remember: it's about the golf course, and golf is golf. Leave your comfort zone. Take a chance.

27 superb greens; challenging but not brutal; big skies and cornfields: play it.

These people seem to know things about greenskeeping that most others don't even suspect. It does not matter the time of year, the greens are a joy to play. They are never slow and almost always give a true and decent roll. The course is with a few exceptions quite open, which means ordinary mortals like me (8ish hdcp) can hit a few shots off line and still be in the hole. There is good variety in the designs of the 27 holes, and the newest nine (Boulder) is a very interesting out and back over what must have been some kind of glacial wash area. This is course for golfers, a real gem. When you hit a good putt here you usually get a good roll. Trust me. Play this course, It will grow on you.
