Peacock Gap Golf Club
Played On 03/27/2021Get the off-course basics right
No coffee before you tee off. Or on the turn. Cart girl hit groups on 4,5,6 while we were on 13. She came to us on 18 tee box while we were starving and thirsty. This is too basic.

Played this course for the first time today after playing a boring and slow course in the morning.
What a difference. Despite being 1200 yards shorter I still shot 4 strokes worse and smiled the whole time. Almost every tee shot forced a decision and every single green complex was interesting. Pace of play was fine , even though at one point I got stuck behind a pair of dads with 6 kids. They quickly let me play through and everyone was having a good time and delighted to be out there.
there's no water on this course and few (amazing) bunkers, and it's in the perfect most serene setting. it sets up relatively easy for average hacks and still poses a real challenge to good golfers.
Go here. Play here.
Rooster Run Golf Club
Played On 09/01/2018Boring and slow
I played this course for the first time this morning. It was boring and slow. Despite being pressured to tee it off from an extra 400 yards further back than I usually do by the group we were paired with, I ended up shooting well.
But I didn't have fun. And it was not a fast round. The people I played with treated every putt like it was to win the US open, and squabbled with each other constantly. The marshall came out to hang out with these guys (regulars, I guess) but never said a word about pace even when there were 3 clear holes in front of us on 16 tee on .a Saturday morning.
The course is your classic, built in the 90s "stretches to 7000 yards" wasteland of 60 bunkers and 10 ponds that don't affect good players but give crappy ones fits.
Won't go back.
Lake Chabot Golf Course - The 18 Hole Course
Played On 02/04/2018Mario Golf IRL
Somehow this course is both extremely boring and extremely interesting at the same time. Front 9 has 3 par 3s and 3 par 5s - lots of variety? Sorta.. 7/9 holes are straight holes to an elevated green. The green on 5 isn't elevated, and 9 is a 100 foot drop to a postage stamp.
The whole course is filled with driveable par 4s, which are fun in moderation but I kinda got bored with it, especially since 4 of them are bunched together in 10-16.
Then you get to the last hole. Par 6. (yeah) Downhill dogleg left. The problem is that I can't see a way to ever get a decent lie on the second or 3rd shots. You'll always be taking a wood or long iron off a severe back to front downslope.

Greens had just been aerated yesterday 8/7. If you like putts that roll true with speed wait a couple weeks.
San Geronimo Golf Club

Played here yesterday with a couple of buddies - we are varying skill levels (one guy is basically scratch, I'm a 9 the other guy about a 18). Scratch guy played from the tips, we played from the blues (20 guy bombs it off the tee). Front 9 is flat and pretty easy. A few odd twists and turns with some trees, but basically standard golf. Back 9 is much more challenging with some cool elevated tee boxes and blind tee shots. Some long par 3s, and plenty of dog-leg lefts, and even some water on a few holes. Very pretty course.
One bit of local knowledge - on every hole (except par 3s) there are two red trees (short-ish japanese maples) planted on either side of the fairway which are at 150 yards out. This gives you a much better sense of the hole than a barber pole and i wish more courses would do this.
As a warning, the advertised rate on GolfNow does *not* include the cart fee, so we were surprised with an extra $10/each on the already somewhat steep green fees. First course I've been to that has this issue and GolfNow/the course should resolve this.
Crystal Springs Golf Course
Played On 06/14/2015Fine day
Good outing with some old college buddies. Course was full and we started 15 minutes late, but once we got going the pace-of-play was what you expect on a public course near the city on a nice weekend - that is, abyssmal. 5 and a half hour round.
Some of the tee boxes were in *very* bad shape. Greens are really fast but that's to be expected with the current water crisis. Bunkers have almost no sand - tough to flop out a good wedge.

Nice little sunday at chardonnay with the wife. Paired up with a couple of friendly guys and enjoyed beautiful weather, reasonable pace of play, and excellent course conditions.

Played as a twosome to celebrate my birthday. Course was in excellent shape with very fast, even greens. Pace of play was a little bit slow - but this was a late Saturday morning. Will definitely return!
