About

I enjoy walking while playing; nothing against carts, I just enjoy the good walk spoiled. I just recently got a push cart as a Fathers Day present so no more carrying, plus after a study showed both carrying and push cart expend about same energy/calories. So I enjoy walkable courses / not mandatory carts. Every time I hit sub-10 handicap index, I seem to fall back to 11 so usually 80-85 score. I enjoy old muni courses and I look them up over resort courses when I travel - e.g. Brown Deer Park in Milwaukee; Jimmy Clay in Austin; Papago in Phoenix. I also enjoy college / university courses and being retired military, I enjoy military base courses. My best round of golf ever (not lowest score ever, which was a 76 on par 72) was 87 at Torrey Pines South from 7200 yards when it was dry, hard, and fast!

Typical Palm Springs Public Course - Friendly Staff

This course to me was your typical Palm Springs public course, nothing special however the staff were super friendly and informative so I'd say the great staff puts makes this course stand out among the many other peers in the Valley. I wish they had pull carts to rent for out-of-towners who prefer to walk.

Fun and Challenging Par 3 18-Holer

Fun and challenging par 18-holer. For out-of-towners, the entire Palm Springs area has little to no courses that allow you to walk and also rent out pull-carts. This course being a par 3 layout, provided pull cart rentals and walking only, a nice change of pace for us walkers. We enjoyed the layout with plenty of bunkering and water coming into play. The homes are set back far enough to not impose on your game. Played in a little under 3 hours and just waited on a few holes. Greens were true and few ball marks to fix was nice surprise for a par3. Greens were not too tricky / pretty easy to read. Some were postage stamp size while others supersized. I will play here again if I ever return to Palm Springs (I doubt it due to the lack of walking accommodations).

No Pull Cart Rentals As Advertised

The course summary says that this course has pull-carts rentals available for walkers but when we checked in they said they don't have them, plus the walking rate is the same price as the riding cart rate. They did allow us to walk. Course staff, conditions, layout all were fine but to lug our bags when we thought we'd be able to rent pull carts was disappointing. Still, I would play here again when in Palm Springs and recommend to others.

Decent Muni Value - Wide Fairways

Played here while visiting Rochester for the 2023 PGA Championship. Staff friendly and helpful, needed to rent a pull cart for walking. Course your average muni, nothing spectacular, only complaint is with a yellow ball and all the dandelions in the fairway, it made for a challenge to find my ball. I didn't have a white one to swap out. Otherwise good confidence builder, wide fairways especially after walking around Oak Hill with those tight ones! Played 9 in just under 2 hours, easy to walk.

Fun Muni Option in Rochester Area

Played while visiting Rochester area for 2023 PGA Championship. Staff seemed friendly and helpful. They had pull-carts to rent since we walked. Fairly easy walk to play. Course in good shape despite wet conditions. Plenty of dog legs and challenges to keep your course management on alert. I would play here again when visiting Rochester.

Fun Layout and Enough Challenges

Played while visiting Rochester area for PGA Champ 2023.
Fun layout and enough challenges to keep us on our toes. Interesting in that it starts out with two par 5s on holes 1 and 2, so birdie opportunities right from the start. It was pretty wet and some showers but course seemed to hold up pretty well. Did get mud balls but that is unavoidable.
Played Up. Staff was friendly. No pull carts to rent for walkers but since we just played 9 it was not a big deal. Pretty easy walk to play. Would come back if in the Batavia area, then get some baby back ribs at Alex's Place!

Williamsburg Gem

Played on a Monday afternoon when course was relatively empty, played in under 4 hours walking. Staff very friendly and accommodating. Course was in fine shape. Great layout. While they allow walking, this is a serious hike due to the various elevation changes on nearly every hole, so be ready for a workout if you choose to walk. Glad we played from the whites at 6200 yards and change because even for single digit handicappers that was enough of a challenge. Course layout is straightforward as front nine goes out 5 and comes back 4, and same with back 9. Each of the par 3s could be the signature hole as they are scenic and unique. I felt the price and value was fair. If you are visiting Williamsburg area with your clubs, highly recommended to play the Gold!

Good Muni Option with 27 Holes

Good muni option with 3-9s / 27 holes. I liked the Woods 9 since it challenged to keep the driver long and straight and felt like a walk in nature for sure. I would play here again when in the Williamsburg area.

Keep Expectations Low - Hey It's Golf!

For a quick round and being able to get on this course at any time if you have military access to the Cheatham Navy Annex, if you keep your expectations low then it might be worth checking out. Too bad due to budget cuts that they only have the front 9 maintained and the back 9 is history. Conditions were fair but what I did like was that you need to keep your driver straight as several of the holes are pretty tight with trees on both sides. I would go back and play here if time crunched and being able to walk right on.

This Course Is Now Closed - New Housing and A Park

This was a fun local proximity Eugene, OR muni - it's not closed as of 12/23/2022 due to land sale for a park and some more housing. The back 9 had sold and been developed several years earlier.

A Top-Ten Denver-Metro Muni Course

All around excellent golf experience from checking in to practice range to teeing off to making the turn to holing out on 18 to 19th hole to departure! Of all the Denver Metro municipal golf courses, this is at least a top 10 if not top 5 for sure. No wonder it's so tough to get a tee time!

Favorite South Charlotte Area Course

Out of several Charlotte area - south courses we played while visiting for the Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow, I enjoyed this course the best. I knew there was something special about the front 9 layout, could not put my finger on it and then they told me it was Donald Ross - little nuances where he challenges you or gets in your head about where to aim or other golf course management decisions. Plenty of elevated greens but not too bad to walk on a not hot day. Very cool par 5 on the back that is like a snowboard half pipe with a big curve in it, almost like a tunnel in the forest. I think that is the signature hole. No real complaints and enjoyed everything, from finding the place to parking to finishing the round and everything in between. would play here again in a heartbeat. I heard the waiting list for public membership is years.

Good Classic Muni - Walkable

Nothing blew me away as great about this course and no major complaints either. Seemed like a decent muni in fairly good shape, walkable, good price, friendly starter, pace of play just OK. From what I observed of the Charlotte area municipals like Sifford, Jones and this one, they do a pretty good job of offering some decent golf. I would play here again.

Elevated Greens Challenge Club Selection

Played here while visiting for Presidents Cup at QH.
Lots of elevated greens will challenge your club selection - I now believe the theory that downhill shots do not need as much distance adjustment as uphill ones. They allow walking on this course however it's not the most walker friendly as lots of elevation changes, and where you need to stay on the cart path even with your push cart anyway. A few tee boxes that are a bit of a hike from last green. I would not walk this on a crowded weekend to respect pace of play no matter how brisk you walk. Nice layout, good course conditions, fast and sloped greens, friendly staff for first-timers - even asked if I ever played here before. Similar in some ways to Fort Mill Golf Club layout. I would play here again if in Charlotte area.

Unique Jim Engh Layout, Foothills Setting

I regularly played this course the first 5 years it was open and always enjoyed it for the unique layout and course conditions. 15 years since I last played it, it seemed very much the same as they've kept it in fine condition and has not changed much from original design and condition. The main thing is the price - the demand to play the course has sunk in over the years and price as well.
For those not familiar with Jim's designs, he also did Sanctuary, Red Hawk Ridge, and Snowmass in Colorado, so has somewhat of a special place in Colorado golf course architecture.

For your warm-up, the chipping green is located uphill from the clubhouse so makes sense to chip/pitch first, putt, then hit the range/check in since the 1st tee is just down the hill right next to the range.

Staff was friendly and helpful, practice areas fine, and course condition was green and lush for late summer. I understand some golfers think this course is gimmicky since it has "funnel" fairways and greens where the ball will tend to kick back into play, I just feel it gives it a unique flair not seen much elsewhere and a welcome change. One downside on the funnel design is a lot of side hill / uneven lies out of the rough.
The greens are various shaped and undulating but were not extremely difficult or fast. Chipping and pitching is key as the ball will run out and getting short-sided can be costly here. Club selection as well is tricky on approach shots.

#4 par 4 just play as a par 5 and unless you hit an ideal drive, just get on it 3 and hope for par or be happy with bogie. Otherwise there are plenty of birdie opportunities out there.

I've always walked this course and I get stares and comments because of some of the elevation changes it might seem like an extreme hike but I don't think it's that tough of a hike, just a few more steep inclines here and there and on holes 11, 12, and 13.

For the Denver Metro area, Fossil Trace is a course you need to experience at least once whether it turns out to be a favorite or once is enough!

27 Holes of Fun Parkland Layout

Staff were friendly. Practice area above average. Course conditions excellent. Easily walkable course. 27 holes / 3 different 9s, most popular and standard combo is Sleeping Indian - Cottonwood. On #2 Sleeping Indian tee box, look at the rocky crag on the west horizon to see the Sleeping Indian laying on his back.

Some criticism is that they built some houses too close to the fairways which for high handicappers I can agree. But if you tend to keep the ball in play, it's about normal. Maybe tread carefully on #2 and #13.

No complaints, I don't live near the course but will likely add it to our yearly regimen and for any Denver Metro golfer, this course is worth playing at least once to see how you like it!

Classic Muni

Played here after hearing Donald Ross layout and recommendations. Played 18 same day went to practice round at U.S. Open at The Country Club. This course was close proximity to the shuttle to the tourney. Gotta say, this course is as classic a muni as the TCC is classic a Country Club. Old stone fancy clubhouse, a stone wall around the perimeter of the grounds.

Staff was friendly and amenable in getting our group out earlier than our original tee time. We had one local in our 4some and it definitely helped getting local intel, especially on the blind tee shots. But even on those, it's pretty much aim center fairway on a straight shot. We walked and it was a good hike workout, given we had walked all over the U.S. Open same day.

Some of the extreme slopes remind me of Arnie's place at Latrobe, PA. Course conditions were excellent. Greens were fair and not too undulating or tricky.

I would definitely return here for another round and recommend anyone who loves classic old munis, you won't be disappointed.

Not Long But Tight And Challenging

Glad we played the white tees because this course while not long, is tight and a target / dart thrower's course. While the course beat me down pretty good, this is the type of course you need to give yourself a waiver for first time playing. Give yourself and break and enjoy the round. We had a local guy, Jeff, in our group, so it was helpful know what targets and lines to shoot at. We walked and they had some decent pull carts to rent. Staff very helpful and friendly. Conditions - no complaints! I would play here again for sure.
