Excellent Course, Guy Getaway

The course itself was in great shape. Lots of length options for all skill levels, interesting layout and greens with contour without being extreme. Tees, fairways, rough, bunkers and greens all in great shape. The main challenge comes from the narrow fairways with overhanging mature trees and lots of doglegs. To score well, you must be driving the ball well and be able to work the ball left and right. Straight drives normally will either be through the fairway or leave longer shots to the green. The rough is not penal if you are off the fairway and finding balls is not difficult, but expect to have to navigate back to the fairway through trees without much chance of reaching the green in regulation.

One warning ... this is a popular guy getaway. The course was alive all day with inebriated yells, whoops and hollers. Not a good choice for couples play ... there were no women in sight. The tight fairways, tipsy golfers and lack of any on-course assistance contributed to painfully slow play on the back 9.

We stayed at the villas which were decent digs, but expect party central.

Bottom line ... a very nice course that is well maintained which is great for your guy getaway. If you are a couple looking for quiet resort golf away from the gentelmen's club crowd, we suggest you look elsewhere.

Amazing Course

I have been playing golf for over 50 years, and this course is probably the most beautiful track I have ever played. It is not cheap and a forecaddy is required, but it is worth every penny. The views are spectacular, the layout is unlike anything I have played and the conditioning of the course is second to none. It is a links course, so hazards are innumerable bunkers, narrow fairways, thick rough and areas of wild fescue and yarrow. The elevation changes are constant and the views are spectacular. The course features the second highest elevation in the state of Indiana.

The staff is incredibly friendly and our caddy was friendly and invaluable, especially in determining the line for tee shots. Stop for a bite to eat at the mansion on the outdoor patio and watch all the action on the first five holes from this lofty perch.

If you go with the stay and play package, choose the West Baden hotel. The atrium is awe inspiring, the spa and pool are first rate and the restaurants serve great food at reasonable prices. You can ride the shuttle or the tram over to the old hotel and casino.

Interesting Mountain Course

Really enjoyed this course. Very much a mountain course, with elevation changes, doglegs, interesting views and quite a few tight tee shots, particularly from the blue or gold tees.

Despite the rough winter in the area, the course was in great shape, including the fairways. Loved the layout ... each hole was a gem. The par 3's were particularly interesting . A great variety of holes and distances... I think I used every club in the bag. Carts were great, and the GPS system was about the best I have ever used. We did see a ranger, and pace of play was pretty good. Staff friendly and accommodating. The greens were in great shape but featured a lot of pitch. It will take a few times to learn the best spots to put the ball on the greens to avoid almost certain 3 putts.

No practice facility, but there was a large net to hit into to warm up by the first tee.

We plan to come back and play this course again.

Mixed Bag

My overall impression is that the course used to be a pretty little track, but that the maintenance budget has been cut and some things are now going to seed.

On the plus side, the golf was relatively inexpensive. The land was relatively flat for a mountainous region, but the course was dotted by lakes and the layout was interesting. Greens were well maintained. The staff, while minimal, was friendly and accommodating. There is a practice facility, tho the grass tees were in really bad shape. Decent carts with minimal GPS.

On the negative side, the fairways were very spotty with many dry, bare or dead spots. Traps minimally maintained. Tees choppy. Cart paths need work. We were behind a foursome with open holes in front of them ... no ranger on the course to help.

I'd rate this an average muni course. We had a decent time, but I wouldn't recommend to a friend and we won't try to play it again.
