Sandwich Hollows Golf Club
Played On 09/04/2015Ok for the $29.95 price, but not great
I paid for the special: 18 holes including cart for $29.95 via Golf Now. I wouldn't pay any more. The place looked very tired from the parking lot to the course. It was very quiet, but still played slow until the back nine then it was wide open. Greens were very slow and in some cases ragged. Design was ok and playable except the 18th hole where the idiot designer put a tree 30 yards in front of the green in the middle of the fairway.! A great tee shot gets punished by requiring you to go UNDER the tree to a tiny green. I made par anyway, but This cheap trick is simply laziness. DUMB
Dennis Highlands Golf Course
Played On 09/03/2015Good playable public course
I play the highlands a few times each year. It is very accessible for hackers like me. Most holes are walkable, but it is a little hilly. The real challenge is the greens, lots of subtle curls. Well maintained course and facilities with very good practice areas. Weekend play can be very slow in "the season" summer on Cape Cod, but midweek its better. My only complaint is the price of $66 plus a cart is a little high for a muni. The resident membership of $700/ year is a steal, so I guess they charge the casual players a premium. The Dogleg Grill is decent place to hang out after a round, not fancy but good value.
North Andover Country Club
Played On 09/02/2015Wonderful challenging 9 hole Donald Ross gem
I am a member of this private club, so I suppose I'm biased, but I love this little Donald Ross designed course. Ross didn't build it, and over 100 years it no longer looks like his vision, but Each hole is unique and requires accurate shots. Long hitters beware, you rarely need more than a 200 yard tee shot. Straight hitters will love this place. You MUST keep the ball below the hole to keep it to one or two putts. Because there are only 200 members there are no tee times. Where else can you decide at noon to ditch the office and just show up to "drop a ball and play"? Fun fact Ross' original drawing are in the clubhouse bar and grill, and were almost lost, but were rescued by the current head pro Peter Farley, from a historical society that found them in their basement! Priceless.
My only complaint is that in summer the greens are terribly slow, the superintendent over waters and doesn't aerate and sand them often enough. After putting here, you look foolish at other courses with proper water and sand management.
Patriots Point Golf Links
Played On 4/16/2013great value, good fun
This was my first time playing in Charleston area. Good intro to Charleston golf. The greens in good shape, a little wet from recent rains. Fairways were a little bumpy, but not bad for April. Good shots rewarded, bad shots penalized - a fair course. I booked one day ahead on GolfNow.com and paid $25 including cart - a steal! My score wasn't good, but that was my fault. My saving grace was being with a twosome who were regulars - like I had fore-caddies. My highlight was making par on # 17, the island green - made me want to play again sometime.
Just an FYI - the tree is gone. They took it down this winter.
