Blackheath Golf Club
Played On 06/11/2019Blackheath for the win.
Played 10-18 first and as a two some. 1:45
Joined another couple for 1,-9 after waiting 10 minutes at our Turn, 2 :00 for that nine.
The course was in nice condition, the 10-20 mph breeze kept it interesting.
Copper Hills Golf Club - Jungle Course
Played On 05/05/2018Early season weekend
Surprisingly uncrowded for a Saturday Noon. Staff was friendly but women will want to know that there was no on course restroom, although we were told there was one for the 27 holes there.
The bunkers were absent any playable sand, a couple had exposed drain pipes. Worst I have ever seen. Thankfully, I only found myself in one or two.
The Cedar River at Shanty Creek
Played On 08/21/2014Cedar River is a solid course which an average golfer can enjoy
After playing The Chief nearby, this course was a relief. It is typical resort golf in Northern Michigan with some refreshing design touches and a couple of oddities. The 13th hole needs to be viewed from the green on backward to the tee before you play it and 18 is 604 yards from the tips. Maintenance was above average. One or two greens differed noticeably in speed from the other 16. I'd recommend it and play it again myself.
The Chief Golf Course
Played On 08/20/2014Come and take a beating
Unless you are a STEADY lower handicapper, say under 13, you will find The Chief will scalp you. This is tougher than Pebble Beach, Bay Harbor or the nearby Hawks Eye ( which isn't easy).
I don't need the abuse, not a replay for meas a 17 handicap index and an erratic player.
Cherry Creek Golf Club
Played On 08/09/2014Surprising pace of play, finally
I have avoided CC because of the near five hour rounds. Today, despite a Saturday 12 Noon start. Our foursome came in at 4:09. Our only wait was on 18. Greens have improved since earlier this season. I shot an 88 with four holes accounting for +10.
Bluffs/Peaks Golf Course at Boulder Pointe Golf Club
Played On 04/21/2014Fire sale prices are awesome
Paired up with a father and son (45 + 18). They weren't very good and we played our second nine without them. The grass wasn't green yet but heights were good. Greens were firm and a decent speed. Courses with members shouldn't send out Singles who want to drive around foursomes and twosomes. Geez, pair them up. We saw several.
Blackheath Golf Club
Played On 9/01/2013With a little wind, it plays like a links course
Conditions, especially the greens are generally pretty good. There are a variety of holes and I use most of the clubs in my bag. Decision on the tees at #2 (short 4), #14 (short 4) and #17 (par 5) make things interesting, especially if the wind is in your face on #17. I play the blue tees as the whites are very, very short (<5400 yards).
Rackham Golf Course
Played On 7/11/2013Still playable after all the years
Played at 8:15 on a Thursday and it was busy and slow. The front took 2:30. We teed off about 8 minutes late (not bad). The greens were a bit slower than what I had done last week on some Boyne course. I estimate a stimp reading of just under 9.0
The course has several doglegs but they are at fair distances and there is no mystery as to what you need to do. I like to play here once or twice per year. I play three times weekly.
They need a beverage cart and two more porta- potties. Ladies and guys with prostate issues be ware.
Cedar Glen Golf Club
Played On 06/25/2013Short and forgetable
This is a short course, even from the tips. It doesn't drain well. After a ten minute rain storm, several greens had standing water and every depression, rut and pothole was filled with water.
This is a good place for beginners and walkers. Saw many of them on a Tuesday mid day. Women and teens must like it.
At a low price, I'd use it as a practice facility.
Golden Hawk Golf Club
Played On 06/22/2013Can't wait to go back
We had a 12:53 tee time but were able to go off #1 about 12:20. It was a very hot muggy Saturday and there was no one ahead of us on the front.
I was impressed with the conditioning and the green speed. Playing on a Fire Sale rate made this especially nice. Since I was coming off a 16 day layoff due to a back sprain, I tentatively planned to play just nine holes. I also had new irons in the bag which I had not played before.
I started with two PARS, nearly chipping in from 12 feet for a birdie on #1. Finished with 3 PARS and one bogey on the four holes of the back we played. Neither my GF or I were in mid Summer playing shape so we called it a day. We can't wait to come back. The course has plenty of room to use your driver, even if you're not a low digit player. Greens are true. I was suitably challenged on some long Par 4s, as I chose the blue (back) tee.
Glacier Club
Played On 06/04/2013Worth your time
Glacier is a nicely maintained course. Greens were in good shape and a decent speed. Got paired with other GolfNow players, a single and a pair. Despite our 12 pm tee time we were all sent off as we arrived, me as a single at 11:30, then the pair and then another single. We merged into a foursome at the fourth hole. They need to educate the starter as this practice will hurt pace of play if it is their standard.
Heather Hills Golf Club
Played On 05/16/2013V. Good conditions and enjoyable pairing
I arrived as a single but joined another single and twosome. We became a very compatible group. You'll use your driver on this course and you need to putt well. There are probably three very difficult greens. Position below the hole is key on all holes. With a 10-12mph gusts and elevated greens or downhill holes, club selection is critical. The course is worth the trip.
WestWynd Golf Course
Played On 11/11/2012A wasted day
We played on a Sunday in November. The course was loaded. Greens were horrible but not as bad as the pace of play. Tee markers were missing. It's not ladies friendly since there is only one restroom near 15's green and before the 16th tee.
Our day was very windy and we had some rust from a three week layoff. Quit after 4.5 hours and 16 holes.
Timber Trace Golf Club
Played On 10/21/2012Great Fall scenery
Picked it on past experience and price. We love the home just left of and near the first green. Check out the front doors. But I digress.
The course was not very crowded and the pace was excellent on the front. The back was held up by a slow foursome, two groups in front of my twosome. Conditions were very good but the greens were slower than I like. The entire drive from the US 23 exit into the Pinckney area is very pretty this time of year. The course is also very scenic. A good couples course for the average golfers.
Paint Creek Country Club
Played On 09/29/2012Go in eyes open
We played at 11:32 on a Fall Saturday. Got paired with another couple. First impression of the course was that it was very scenic and well maintained. The Starter was helpful and friendly as was the Pro Shop counter help.
Playing the course was very difficult as the slope rating is 141 or so AND it had the most blind tee shots of any course I have ever played (probably 80 courses or there abouts). The greens were in good shape and at the faster end of the range I am used to locally. Not unreasonable but their quickness stands out.
The other facilities, e.g, the locker room and dining area are not up to other private clubs. Very out dated, small and not at all top end luxury.
I would love to play it again when I feel my A game will show up.
