Tight 9 hole course

This course is very tight, tree lined with water in all the hard places. Had a lot of fun on this course with the hills and par 3's providing the challenge and fun. Located about 5 mins from the highway it's easy to get to and you are challenged from the starting hole. The elevated par 3 6th hole with the undulating greens and fountain is the highlight of this course.

Fun, tight course layout

Enjoyed my 2 rounds (did the first round at 6:52am and play again at 1pm after lunch) on a beautiful day.

Highlights: Course is tight and rewards well planned shots. Despite the amount of rain in May the course is in pretty good shape. Layout is fun especially the par 3 8th hole.

Lowlights: The carts...where to begin with these things. If you like someone telling you where to go and stopping forcing you to put it in reverse with beeping this is your place. You will hate these carts and the constant reminder that you're behind even when you're playing 3hr 30min rounds. Staff inside was not friendly in any way.

Bottom line: play here but don't expect much, look for deals as it's typically a bit expensive for a mid range course.

Great course, almost there

I have been playing this course for over 10 years and this might be the best condition I have seen it. The good: Bunkers are filled with nice fluffy sand and new drains to keep it from turning into the mud pit it has been in the past. Now if they would cover the drains it would be pristine. However it's so much better than before. The greens are 100% better than a year ago when they were battling some fungus issues. You are truly rewarded for hitting the fairway which isn't always the case at municipal courses in the area. The bad: There was 2 singles in the two groups in front of us. I suggested they play together and they did, but I wonder why the course didn't suggest the same thing? The weather was mild, 80F and windy (typical for Mansfield) and yet the green watering schedule seemed to be on par for mid August leaving the fringe area soaking wet. On hole 8 there were tire tracks and mud to contend with. Some attention to this would be nice. I pre-paid on Golf Now to secure a $20 rate, an amazing deal for a course the rates mid $30's for mid day tee time (ours was 1:45pm). The course has come a LONG way, I had refused to play there for the past year so it was a nice refresher to come out. Give it a shot and enjoy the mostly wide open course.

Rough Fairway

Went to Southern Oaks on January 20th to play 18. There was not much in the way of waiting on any hole so the pace of play was very nice. Other than that the course is in need of some attention. You were not rewarded for hitting fairways as there are ruts, bare spots and extremely uneven ground on every fairway. The greens were at least smooth unlike when I played here last (about 8 months prior) when there was sand and bare spots there as well. The course is very wide open and could be a fun play if the fairways at the very least got some much needed attention. For roughly the same price you could play 4 or 5 other courses within 10-15miles that are in better shape. No cart girls during the entire round was a bit shocking as well.
