Short Course, Good Greens, Goose/Mud Hen Bombs

Played Monterey Pines for first time on January 7, 2014 with 70 degree weather and no wind. Day was beautiful for a walk on a flat golf course. The staff are friendly, the course is short, but the greens are in great shape. The fairways are also in great shape on the front nine, but on the back nine the fairways are sparse and some around the one lake are full of goose and mud hen bombs, if you know what I mean. Be sure to locate the air hose after your round to get off the bombs from your shoes and push cart wheels.

Somewhat Shoddy Conditions for High End Resort Course

Tee'd off at 8am as a single and finished my round in 3 hours 10 minutes playing 2 balls. The GPS system in the cart is a good feature and speeds up play. The course has somewhat shoddy conditions for a high end resort course. The fairways were sparse and wet, with fenced off areas and one bunker close to the green on the 12th hole being drained down the cart path at around 10am. The restaurant closest to the golf shop (Jimmy's Pub) wasn't even open for a bite to eat or a take out before my round. And there never was a sign of a food cart the whole round. This is a par 70 course and somewhat short. They need to figure out how to make it a par 72 course thus longer and more challenging.

Better Than Average Muni Type Couse

Rancho Canada West is a nice parkland, muni type course, a better track than its sister East course. Lots of mature trees, green fairways and well manicured greens although they were somewhat slow compared to the faster greens on other higher end courses in the Monterey area. The challenges are par 3's that are somewhat long from the blue tees and some par 4's that have severe doglegs on this par 71 very walkable course.

Great Views, Average Course

This course has great views, especially on the back nine along the Pacific Ocean coast. Even some holes on the front nine have a view of Monterey Bay. The course conditions are average at best with limited cart paths, patchy grass and slow, bumpy greens. I took a riding cart after seeing the push cart rental offerings which were shabby at best. The pace of play at 4 hours for 18 holes was a pleasant surprise, but maybe my group was lucky playing on a Thursday teeing off at mid-morning. Recommend that the course be played at least once for the views.

The course is well maintained and we completed our round in four hours, but the practice range only has mats and the greens were almost unplayable.

The Bayonet course is well maintained and we completed our round in four hours on a Wednesday afternoon, but the practice range only has mats. The greens on the Bayonet course are almost unplayable for the average golfer due to severe slopes, mounds and swales. One must land the approach shot below the hole, but most of the greens had forward pin placements making such a feat almost impossible. Kitchen closed before we finished the round at 4pm and the bar was about to be closed.
