Dos Rios Country Club
Played On 09/26/2018Enjoyable
Had good weather and the course was in good shape. This is a very traditional course (but it does improve on the back and has some fun forced carries over the Gunnison River). I wouldn't go out of my way to play here again, but if I was passing through and was really starved for a round it would do the trick.
Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club
Played On 08/14/2018Worth it
Freddie did a great job with this course. Fun and different, not your usual desert scene. Very slow greens but that's not uncommon this time of year. Cool Australian sand belt simulator. Worth the drive down from Phoenix.
Golf Granby Ranch
Played On 07/29/2018Windy and smoky, but interesting
Tough conditions last week at Granby Ranch, but it was a course worth playing once. I'm generally not a fan of the courses I've played in Grand County (I found Pole Creek to be overhyped and was just kind of lukewarm on Grand Elk) but this track was okay. I tend to like mountain courses that have more nuance to them (like Lakota Canyon or Eagle Vail) but in a pinch this course will do. Hole 12 was great, really fun par 3.
Red Sky Golf Club - Fazio Course
Played On 05/18/2018A bit let down
Unfortunately I think Red Sky Fazio (didn't play Norman) is a victim of too much hype. That isn't to say it's not nice because it is. The course is probably in much better shape than most mountain courses at this time of year are...But I was expecting so much more given the price and having to stay in Vail to get on. I can play other private courses on the front range (Perry Park) or play a public course in the mountains (Eagle Vail) and have twice the fun for a fraction of the cost. 3 stars is the ceiling here.
Oakcreek Country Club
Played On 03/29/2018Meh...
To me if you give a course a 4 plus star rating you should be doing it because you can't have that experience anywhere else, and that isn't how I felt about Oakcreek. I don't have a specific complaint at all and the conditions of the course were quite good, but lets not get this twisted. It's a very traditional route that happens to sit near some very nice scenery. Hence the "average" rating from me.
Coyote Lakes Golf Club
Played On 03/28/2018Very nice
A good friend of mine recommended this course to me a long time ago and I don't usually get this far west when I visit Phoenix. But it was a treat and I'm glad I made the drive. Because it's so short it's primary defenses are sloping fairways and tough greens, so being sharp with your wedges and putter matters. Pace of play was periodically slow and that may be the only area for big improvement here. Shooting a lifetime best makes it hard to complain.
Faldo at Wildfire Golf Club at Desert Ridge Resort
Played On 03/27/2018Amongst Arizona's Best
It's a given that Arizona golf is super overpriced in March, but this course was good enough that I didn't feel as bad about paying $100 plus. Really fun course to try and manage, not hard to find your ball if you whack one in the desert and need to play back to the fairway. Fast greens, great pace, can't complain. Nice work Sir Nick!

Played On 02/06/2018I MIGHT recommend this course to a friend. Depends on the friend
I'll keep this simple. I enjoyed the course, lots of elevation change and fun views that make for an interesting afternoon, but pace of play issues make this course far from being worth over $90. On a faster day with more space between tee times AND at a lower fee would be a 5 star course. But I can't give them more than 2 when I can't get all 18 in.
Orange Tree Golf & Conference Resort
Played On 01/25/2018OT
Played a fair amount in Scottsdale over many years and thought this course was a fun change of pace compared to more upscale ones. We had a snobby marshall tell us to pick it up when other groups around us were really responsible for backups and had to wait a long time for beers afterwards..otherwise this course would get a higher grade. As far as the golf was concerned this course was well conditioned and entertaining. And at high season was reasonably priced.
Quail Dunes Golf Course
Played On 11/13/2017First time at QD
A decent old layout not too far from I-76. Paid $25 with a cart which is hard to beat. No bunkers, which was interesting....Only complaint is there isn't much room between greens and tee boxes which I guess is how old courses used to be...built for walking. It was just hard to take really aggressive lines if there was a group in front of you and not worry too much about hitting them.
Hugo Golf Club
Played On 10/29/2017Bucket list round for $5
If you really love golf you have to try this kind of a course at least once. Oil and sand greens take a little getting used to (I found using a wedge or putter is kind of based on personal preference.) The fairways are made of buffalo grass and are pretty hard pan so be prepared for that as well. Pro shop isn't always open so be sure to bring cash for the drop box. No carts available so plan on walking. Overall if you aren't big on frills and want an experience you can't get many other places, this course is worth playing.
Rio Grande Club
Played On 10/19/2017Off the beaten path
Can't complain about having the course to myself. The layout here is fun and creative with lots of great scenery that comes into play like the rock wall on #1 and multiple forced carries of the Rio Grande. Can't give this place a higher grade though because a $60 plus green fee at this time of year is unacceptable. Greens had layers of sand and chemicals on them all day and fairways were pretty shaggy/leafy. There needed to be a larger discount for that.
Cattails Golf Club
Played On 10/17/2017Meh...
It's really the only option in Alamosa...Glad I had a coupon for a fat discount and didn't pay full price. Lots of pebbles after they treated the greens for fall. Made for bad putting conditions and too many leaves on the course. Hard to find well struck shots. A one time visit for me.
Collegiate Peaks Golf Course
Played On 10/03/2017Worth playing if you are around
I paired this course with 9 at Salida in the same day and it was worth doing. CP is more scenic, but I preferred the layout at Salida. Both courses are well priced and entertaining. They are also quite flat, but if you are in the Arkansas Valley and love golf both are worth checking out.
Salida Golf Club
Played On 10/03/2017Nice surpise
I played 9 here and 9 at Collegiate Peaks in the same day because they are only 30 minutes apart and was glad I did. Depending on your preferences both courses have value. Salida is older but the design is more interesting in my opinion. Holes 4, 6 and 8 are my favorites. Cool forced carries and water hazards with railroad ties...sort of like a Pete Dye course in some ways. Collegiate Peaks is more scenic. Both are fun, flat muni tracks that are well priced.
Trinidad Golf Course
Played On 09/26/2017FUN
Purists will love this place. Great prices and it definitely has a Donald Ross feel. Tricky shot making required on 9 holes (with 18 different tee boxes so you technically can play 2 different 9s). I played on a rainy day and pretty much had the course to myself. Bring cash though- sometimes the pro shop is closed and you may need to put your greens fee in the drop box.
EagleVail Golf Club
Played On 09/21/2017Best I've seen in Vail/BC
Exciting layout. Lots of ups and downs, which I enjoy. Similar to Keystone River with the forced carries and good views along the river/into the high country. This course's best quality is it feels like a other high end resorts at a much lower price. I wouldn't make a habit of playing here for the standard rate, but at $55 with a cart it was a great call.
Ranch at Roaring Fork Golf Course
Played On 09/20/2017Good par 3
3 stars is probably the ceiling for this course because the design is fairly vanilla. But you won't find a better deal. I got unlimited golf for $28 with a pull cart. They don't take tee times because they don't need to, kind of a cool concept to be able to walk up and play as many holes as you want. Nice and affordable in an area that is anything but.
