This is how it’s done

Kudos to the Shenny staff for making sure everyone is 100% safe during these times. This was my first time out to a course since late March. Shenny’s setup and staff were amazing, And, the “reverse plunger” device on every flag is perfect..

GREAT JOB!

You can't not love this place...

I drive an hour (from central CT) and my brother drives 1.5 hours (from western RI) once year to play this track. IT NEVER FAILS TO BE ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR SEASON.

We play ALL of the courses across eastern CT and western RI we rarely play the same place twice in the same season. But, we do always come back to the tracks we love. This is the fourth year in a row that "The Knob" has been in our rotation.

Everyone is super-friendly here. The staff is amazing. The course is always on excellent shape. Looking at the scorecard, you can be fooled into thinking that this course has no teeth; you're wrong to think that! The long par3s have plenty of bite. The long par4s are challenging. The doglegs place a premium on your course management skills. the par5s are as they should be: risk/reward length for the long hitters, but good three-shot par5s for the average golfer.

And, once you tee off and get away from the clubhouse, you probably won't hear or see another car until you are putting your clubs in the car.

Well done, Knob staff...well done, indeed.

Always a pleasure...

...to play Andersen's Glen. It's certainly not the toughest track in the central CT area; however, it is a lot of fun to play. Staff is always friendly. Pace of play was fantastic (a 4:10 round on a Saturday morning is pretty much unheard of these days!).

Two minor suggestions:
The course's website is really good, so they should use it to report when aeration is taking place Luckily, they used small tines when they aerated earlier in the week, so the greens weren't bad at all...but still.

Put "real" cups on the the practice greens (maybe on one of the two, at least). This is just my pet peeve, but c'mon, it really doesn't wreak that much havoc, does it?

If you haven't yet played either of Blackledge's tracks , what are you waiting for?

I love, love, love this place....

I play a lot of golf at a lot of courses in the Eastern CT/Western RI area. Fenner Hill is one of my top-shelf tracks every...single...time...I...go...there.

I'm a solid 9-handicap and this course challenges me on most every shot . The course will give up pars and birdies, but you will need to concentrate and manage the course from the first tee to the last putt.

Simply put, this is a great test for me.

It's like a brand new course!!!

I grew up in the New Britain area, so I learned a long time ago, to avoid the "red" nine whenever possible So, when I saw that our 18-hole round was the "White-to-Red" track, I was not exactly thrilled.

The White nine is unchanged, but the Red nine? Umm...it's essentially a brand new nine (except for the first hole)!. And it is STELLAR!

Great course, great practice facilities, great staff. Honestly the new-look of the Red nine caught me off-guard, so I will definitely be back for another shot at it!

Well done, New Britain. Well done, indeed.

It's back, so I will be, too...

I've been coming the HHI for a week each summer for 31 years, and until 5 or 6 years ago, GB@IR was always in our rotation. Not sure what happened, not even sure I care what happened, but the course went bad quickly, so we dropped it. This year -- after reading recent GolfAdvisor posts -- I decided to give it another go.

I was not disappointed!

Course is in PERFECT condition. Teeboxes are well-maintained. Fairways are in excellent shape. Bunkers are fluffy. Greens are -- oh my! -- greens are phenomenal! Ample markings (every sprinkler head has front/middle/back numbers) really help.

Making a two-putt par on #18 was worth the cost of admission!

Great job bringing this track back to the top--tier of HHI golf courses. See you next year (week of 07/13)!!

First -- but certainly not the last -- time!

Wow! I've been coming to HHI for a week every summer for 31 years and I have somehow cheated myself out of playing what I believe is THE BEST $70 course on the island!

Course conditions were perfect. The golf course is laid out perfectly. Risk/reward shots are all over the place. Everything is just so scenic. I was truly sad when my round ended.

My only suggestion -- and this isn't just for the Cupp staff -- is to suspend the cart-path only rule once the course dries out. We had a lot of rain the night before I played, so I get that we had to start with cart-path only, but by the 10th hole, everything was pretty much back to normal, so even a 90-degree rule would have been helpful (cart-path only rules are necessary, but they do slow down play and make club selection iffy at times).

Glad we came back....

We've had a family renunion on HHI for the last 31 years; we've played HHN probably 28 or 29 of those years. It's a great layout, challenging all levels of golfers.

Honestly, we very nearly scratched it off of our "must play" list because of the way we were treated by the rangers last year (they were on us unnecessarily like white on rice about pace of play, at one point insisting that we "skip a hole"!).

I'm glad we decided to write of last year as an anomaly! The staff was over-the-top friendly. We saw rangers all over the course, but whenever they stopped it was to say ask how we were doing and to remind us to have fun!

And fun we had. This is a great, great track. A good mix of mid- to long-par 4s, par 5s that are not quite reachable in two, but are not "tricked out" in any way (that is, you can bang away with your driver and 3-wood and "almost" get home). HINT: Play the blues!

Course -- as always -- is in PERFECT condition.

We will definitely be back next year.

I really loved this track!!!

I've been coming to HHI for 31 years. I've played -- I think -- every public and/or semi-private course on the island and just off the island. I've played Fazio (once) and Jones (half a dozen, at least!). I'm not sure how/why the AH track fell out of my rotation, but I do know that was a mistake, because it is one of the best courses on the island. It's really good challenge for the 6-12 handicapper. The greens are smallish (narrow, mostly) so you'll need your mid- to short-iron A-game to score here. On the putting surface, you'll need to maneuver through some very tricky undulations. Finally, this place will put your course management skills -- especially on the teebox -- to the test; it is definitely NOT a grip-it-and-rip course.

If you are looking for a great challenge from the white tees, look no further, peeps.

Agree...bunkers need work...

I've always rated the Jones layout as a 5-star track. But, I do agree with a recent poster -- the bunkers are in need of repair. They are rock hard. A prime example is the bunker that guards the front of #12. If you end up there, it is literally impossible to keep the ball of the green, and darn near impossible to not pinch it over the green and into the back hazard.

Still, don't let the bunkers keep you from playing here! Just avoid the bunkers at all costs!!

This place never disappoints...

...seriously, it NEVER disappoints. Private club conditions on a public course. Staff is super-friendly. Course is challenging, but extremely fair; you play well, you score well...you don't play well, you will struggle.

It's a 1-star for "off-course amenities, only because it is in the middle-of-nowhere. Actually, you drive to the middle-of-nowhere, and then you drive another 30 minutes to get to the course! But, it is worth every mile travelled.

Fair, but challenging....

Love this track...

Many people complain about the opening tee shot (a tough carry over a brook), but if you haven't brought your "A"-game, then admit it and lay up. Besides, there are plenty of holes to make up from your mistake (two short-ish par 4 on the front and a wide-open "boom it" par 4, as well.

You need to not lose your concentation here, because the backside -- especially 14-16 -- are challenging. Course management is a must here.

Finally, can't say enough about the staff here. Pro shop is always friendly (there's a lot of history in the that room!), the starters are welcoming, and the rangers are awesome.

If you haven't played here, you should. If you have played here, you know what I'm talking about.

Yes! Yes! Yes!

Look, I play golf courses all over Eastern CT, from CT National to Norwich Country Club and Western Rhode Island. Timberlin is literally seven minutes from my house, and it is one of the BEST tracks I play on! Course conditions are ALWAYS mints. Staff is super-friendly. And, the course is challenging.

In a ranking system of 1 - 10, Timberlin warrants an 11!!!

An HHI favorite

Technically, I guess, this is an "off the island" course. Not matter, I stay on the "heel" section of the island, and it still takes only 15 minutes to get the course. It's a 15 minutes well-spent, in my opinion.

The layout here is really good. A nice mix of par4s (most are in the 350-380 range, with a couple of 400+ yard ones). The par 3s are challenging without being ridiculously long.

The teeboxes, fairways, bunkers, and greens were in perfect condition.

We play here every year during vacation. We'll be back next year!

Yes...yes...yes...

I mean, c'mon, it's a Robert Trent Jones layout, so how can it be anything but challenging. Lots of bunkers, but they are well-placed (in my opinion), so if you find yourself walking into them, it's because you hit an errant or bad shot. Greens were lightning-fast (a great thing, in my opinion. Teeboxes and fairways were immaculate. Great views (ocean and lagoon) abound.
Overall, top shelf!

Two minor "distractions".

Driving range is set up with mats. No, stop this please. Mats are for the Northeast, not for the south. Buy a couple of lengths of rope, some extra grass seed, and let players warm up/practice from the turf.

Get electricity to the shack between the 9th and 10th holes. I get it...a hurricane came through last year. Still, buy a generator, hook it up, and turn it on. My "aim" is somewhat suspect even in well-lit conditions, so peeing in the dark does not turn out well (seriously, we had a woman in our group and she literally had to use the bathroom in COMPLETE darkness).

Private club conditions at public course price...

Honestly, I wrote a scathing review of this place last year, not because of the conditions, layout, or value, but because of the overly-strict adherence to pace of play guidelines...we were rushed around the course, frankly.

Thankfully, those rules have been relaxed, making this my most enjoyable round of the week (I played a different course every day during my week-long vacation on HHI). Course is in perfect shape. I am a single-handicapper, and even playing from the white tees, challenges abounded! Nice mix of doglegs on the par 4s. Risk/reward opportunities on the par 5s. Challenging (not ridiculously long or short) par 3s. Overall, a top shelf course. I love all of the HH Plantation courses (Oyster Reef, Bear Creek, and Dolphin Head). When I retire, I'll be lobbying with the missus to retire there!

You MUST play here when in HHI

I have played ALL of the public course on HHI over the past 30 years (except for the Sea Pines courses). In my opinion, Oyster Reef is the centerpiece of the top shelf courses on the island. Beautiful layout. Perfect conditions. Great staff. All the golf you want from the white or blue tees.

I will play here every year I come to the island. If you haven't, you should. If you have, you should continue.

Plantation golf at its finet...

It's all the golf you want from the blue tees (for single handicappers). Lots of dogleg par 4. A good mix of three-shot par 5s and risk/reward par 5s. Par 3 are mid-length (a good thing). All things considered, a great layout that is challenging. You'll feel good about yourself if you score well here.
