Crooked Cat at Orange County National
Played On 04/21/2024Always good
I got the course when it wasn't at its best, and it was STILL excellent. The greens were not in good shape -- bumpy and splotched with weeds. Every other aspect of the course was excellent and in great shape, as always.
Crooked Cat at Orange County National
Played On 08/14/2022Consistently excellent
Played on a mid-summer afternoon/evening, so hot and humid. Late in the day so no cart person. But the course was in excellent shape, as always, and it remains another excellent layout in the Central Florida golf scene

This remains a good layout in the NW corner of the Orlando Metroplex. Requires a lot of course knowledge as there are hidden hazards. Tee to green was in excellent shape, but some bunkers were muddy. Pro shop is spartan. Eating facilities are odd -- the main grill is spacious but there is no snack bar type option, and that main dining area isn't open for any kind of breakfast sandwich or similar.
It's an interesting track in that it looks like it once aspired to be more than it is. For the price point, it's a good round of golf.

Played On 02/20/2021Best 9-Holer in America
If there's a better 9-hole course, I want to play it. This is what golf is meant to be -- players of all skill levels can play this course and it's fair and relaxing and fun. The course is short, but has outstanding green complexes with beautiful bunkering and undulations. It's walking only -- pull carts allowed of course -- and it is just a very pleasant walk through a lovely neighborhood.
Just a wonderful way to spend 2-1/2 hours.

I've always liked this course. If you hit it straight, you can score, but there's trouble lurking on the sides at all times. Greens are fast for a mid-level public course. Tee boxes were not in great shape. Fairways were good, not great.
My only issue is that the foursome in front of us was loud, slow (hitting multiple balls at every tee), almost drunk, and confrontational. One player in my foursome hit into them when they were around a blind corner. Didn't come close to hitting them, but probably we would have been better served to have waited. That said, they were aggressive at the first opportunity we had to get close to them 2 holes letter, and wouldn't let us apologize, which we were trying to do. Then they kept shouting back at us from greens while we waited for them and their slow play in fairways. There was no ranger in sight to help us alleviate the situation, and they were in no mood to be mollified.
It took the shine off an otherwise very pleasant afternoon on a perfect weather day, when I had joined another threesome of very nice people.
Thank you for taking the time to review us, jam16sugar. Your feedback is valuable, and we look forward to delivering you excellent service again soon. Timacuan Golf Club thanks you!

North Shore Golf Course
Played On 10/31/2020Visually Challenging
North Shore is really for locals, or for an inexpensive getaway round at the end of a trip, as it's close to the airport. It's a good track. Not long, but you have to be able to place the ball in certain spots. That's sometimes difficult, because the holes aren't framed particularly well, even as they are challenging. Greens can be grainy. 4 very good par 3's (even if #8 and #14 are similar). All told, course knowledge helps.
Some amenities are great: New carts, ample range, big pro shop, good grill for the basics (burgers, breakfast sandwiches). Course maintenance is solid, though the course is not well-manicured. People can be scarce, but they are friendly.
It's a solid value at the price point.

Hadn’t played MD in 3 years or so, and it’s in way better shape than the last time out. The layout is challenging, and it’s an attractive course though it doesn’t have any significantly memorable holes. There’s not a lot of serious trouble — it’s not a penal course if you keep it in the fairway.
But the significant challenge is that the greens are very difficult. Large animals buried under them,. So you have to think of the greens as having zones where you have to place the ball. If you don’t, your score will add up quickly with 3 putts and even 4 putts!
Staff was friendly, though very forward with their politics. Bar and restaurant are large and the food is good.
Pace of play was outstanding, though I was the second group off on a beautiful morning.
Location is great, as MD is on the south side of the metro, very near the theme parks. I wouldn’t build a golf trip around this course, but I would absolutely include it in my rota.
Great! Thank you for visiting us at Mystic Dunes Golf Club. We appreciate your 4-star rating and review. We hope you join us for another round soon.
Mission Inn Resort & Club - El Campeon Course
Played On 09/25/2020Fantastic.
I review this course every time I play, and I rave every time. Every. Single. Time.
Such a unique course for Florida -- hilly, and with big, old trees that spread into the fairway and block vision on several shots. The front 9 from the blues plays longer than the 6600 yards. Mistakes are punished. Greens are firm and fast and sloping.
There are only two negatives. One, the sand was a little inconsistent bunker to bunker. There were a couple of green side traps with greens close together (2, 11) that had less sand. And the second is that it's in the Orlando metro, but it's a good ride from downtown, and there isn't much else around.
That said, it's worth the drive and the effort to get there. You won't be sorry.
Celebration Golf Club
Played On 09/07/2020Summer Conditions Always A Challenge
The course is always great and the staff top-notch. They've had a LOT of rain lately, and Celebration and the areas south of Disney have really been hit hard. It additionally rained a lot the day before we played. So it was cart path only, and the fairways were muddy. Lots of plugged shots.
Greens are excellent as always. They were 6 weeks removed from a very deep punching and rolled beautifully.
Distance markers were lacking.
Winter Park Golf Course
Played On 08/15/2020A throwback
The joy I get when I play this course reminds me of when I was first learning to play as a kid. It's just special -- from the 100-year-old clock at the first tee and the quaint clubhouse, to the fact that you get to carry your bags (pull carts only), to walking a golf course though a lovely neighborhood, it's just everything that is the best of golf. And, the course is always in fantastic shape, with fast greens and deep, well-maintained bunkers. It's short, but it's harder than it looks, and it's perfect when your time is limited.

Make no mistake, I love this course. Great layout. Very challenging sightlines for me. Solid practice facility. Very friendly staff, top-to-bottom. And on this day I got it at a great rate, just post-pandemic first wave.
But this is the worst shape I've seen the course in 10 years. Bunkers not draining. Greens with bare spots and patches in them (and slow). I'm sure they got hit by the lack of tourism in the spring, but it looks like they've done very little maintenance for 3 months.
Really hoping the staff can give this track some love and get it back in its best condition.

Mission Inn Resort & Club - Las Colinas Course
Played On 05/23/2020Outstanding challenge
This course is with the ride out away from the Orlando metroplex, as it's very different from most courses in the area. Often seen as the second sibling to its brother on the property -- El Campeon -- Las Colinas is still a really good option. The course is challenging, with some terrific holes, especially from the blue tees. Some course knowledge is helpful, as there are a couple of blind tee shots, and a few holes where the strategy is a little more clear once you've played it. Staff is helpful, friendly and glad to see you. Range is ample.
The only negatives are that pace of play is occasionally slow (not a problem during this round, but the course is not well marshaled). And unlike El Campeon, Las Colinas isn't much to look at (though the bridge over the lake at the very difficult 8th is pretty cool).
A definite recommendation here.
Mission Inn Resort & Club - El Campeon Course
Played On 03/15/2020Fantastic.
I played this most recently on a very strange day -- as the world started shutting down for the pandemic. All kinds times available at a bargain price because a college tournament had cancelled.
The course was in immaculate shape. The greens were pristine. The weather was ideal. And I shot even par from the blues on the back (I'm currently a 10-handicap).
But I've played here for more money (and not scored as well) and I love it. SO unusual for Florida. Lots of elevation change. All kinds of trouble. Really challenging.
It is far from downtown Orlando and the parks, but if you are on the West or Northwest side it helps. And if you are there for a golf vacation, the other course is strong as well. So it's good for a golf/tennis/spa stay and play, but you aren't close to much other activity off-property.

Played On 02/15/2020Rough at the edges
You can't get a better value for the money in the Orlando metro (though it's about 20 miles NW of downtown. That said, they need to tighten up a little it. The course maintenance is as bad as I've seen it in 10 years -- not that it's in bad shape overall, but it's woefully inconsistent. At the same green complex you'll have two bunkers full of sand, and two that have barely any in them. The greens are good but very grainy and, as with maintenance, very inconsistent. The course requires some course knowledge too. You can be penalized for good shots if you don't know better in some places.
That said, it's a great layout and a great price, and the pace of play is usually very good, because the course isn't overcrowded.
MetroWest Golf Club
Played On 01/19/2020Good track. Needs love.
Metrowest has a lot going for it. Great location in downtown Orlando. Good greens that roll well. Well designed and challenging layout.
But it's in way worse shape than I've seen it in a while. The fairways badly needed a complete reseeding. Several of the bunkers were missing rakes. The greens roll nicely, but the greens have lots of ball marks. The tee boxes are uneven and some need mowing.
For the price, I'll keep it in my rotation, but it's not a must play anymore.

The Legends at Orange Lake Resort
Played On 05/25/2019A Local's Review
As a local, I can tell you that this is a really good track for the price point in the area. Legends is a terrific layout with lots of challenges, and some pretty stiff penalties for misplayed shots. There are definitely a couple of holes where it helps to know some secrets (#4, #8, #16, #17) that the course only yields on multiple playings. Still, you can score here. I'm roughly a 10 handicap and I've shot everywhere from 79-96 here. I think that's terrific.
There are some negatives: It can play like a resort course, but without the resort course amenities. That is, play can be slow (not on this day), and so can the greens. Usually this comes with the tradeoff of excellent service, but I have found the staff to be a little chilly. That said, the starter and the cart server were both friendly and the cart server made a lot of appearances.
In short, you can play more luxurious golf in Orlando (and you will pay for it), but in the $50-$70 price range, this is a fun place to play.

Played On 01/05/2019Love This Layout
This course isn't close to either downtown or the Tourist Corridor, but the locals know it.
Pros: Terrific layout that forces you to hit lots of different clubs, especially off the tee. Some great visual trickery. Greens are excellent. Staff is very friendly. Pace of play is usually very good. Price can't be beat, even at full price.
Cons: Course doesn't drain well. Several of the waste bunkers collect water. Pro Shop is limited. Bar/Restaurant keeps odd hours. Driving Range is small and is for irons only.
Thank you for your review. We will pass along your positive experience to our team at Crooked Cat at Orange County National. We look forward to seeing you again soon.
