About
I came to golf as an adult and lack the mechanics that comes easier to someone that learned to play as a child. A top goal is to play as many courses as possible. My game is good enough to play practically any course without too much embarrassment. To date, I have played approximately 120 different golf courses in 10 states and 5 countries. 60+ of these courses are in Northern Georgia.

Royal Lakes Golf & Country Club
Played On 08/27/2023Dead Greens
The greens were the second worst I have seen in 35+ years play golf. Royal Lakes should be ashamed to charge these prices for such a poor experience. Otherwise, the coarse was in above average condition and the pace of play was 4 hours.
Reunion Country Club
Played On 07/23/2023Very Over Priced for Conditioning
I have played this course many times. The price is now very high and the course conditions are poor. Greens are generally ok, Sand traps were in very poor condition and clearly had not been recently groomed. Fairways were covered with limbs and leaves. Many fairway areas are nothing but holes and divots. The 18th holes is in especially poor condition.
Royal Lakes Golf & Country Club
Played On 07/05/2020Too Crowded
Royal Lakes is well maintained which is an improvement over some recent years. The greens are quite slow which is expected for Bent greens in July. The only significant issue was too many people were packed into morning tee times and the pace of play was an issue.
Wolf Creek Golf Course
Played On 07/03/2020Good Course - Marginal Play Management
Wolf Creek is in good condition with clean fairways, well maintained turf, properly groomed bunkers. The greens were a bit slow for my taste. Overall, this is one of the better public courses in Metro Atlanta. I would have rated Wolf Creek four stars if the pace of play was managed.
Providence Club
Played On 06/28/2020Not at it's best
Over the years I have enjoyed playing at The Providence Club. The layout is interesting and fair. Course maintenance is at an all time low point. There are many fallen trees and tree limbs down on the course. Several greens have large dead patches. The greens are long, uneven and poorly managed, Fairways have received minimal management and the turf is in poor condition. Many lawns in the neighborhood are in better condition that the fairways. I have played Providence in past years where it was one of the better maintained publicly accessible courses.
The pace of play was 4:30 with an 8:00 AM Tee time. There is no reason for the pace of play to exceed 4:00 hours on Providence at any time and certainly not with an early morning tee time. There was no effort made to manage the pace of play.

Lake Arrowhead Yacht & Country Club - Highlands Course
Played On 06/21/2020Challenging Course
Lake Arrowhead has nice scenery and is generally a nice golf course. The course has continuous elevation changes and some forced carries. The fairways are reasonably generous, but not resort course width. Most of the greens are quite large. High handicap golfers may find the course too challenging.
The course is well kept, but not anything close to manicured. There are better maintained courses of similar elevation, scenery , and price in North Georgia that are better maintained.
Hello DG1. Thank you for taking the time to review the course and rate us. We are going to pass along your feedback to the staff so they can work to make changes. Thanks for visiting us!
Lanier Islands Legacy Golf Course
Played On 06/16/2019Indifferent Management
It has been quite sometime since my last review. I have played Legacy on Lanier several times over the past few years. Course conditioning is usually good, but never excellent. Overall strengths are the greens, layout and scenery. Service is on the low side for a "Resort" course and amenities are well below even a low-end country club. The practice facilities are also below par, but the owners have done well with the limited space. Those that have read my many previous reviews know that pace-of-play management is a critical review criteria. The management made zero effort to manage pace of play for this round. They allowed a group to run up a 5+ hour round with an open course in front of them. Unfortunately, my group was behind this inconsiderate group for the entire round. Cannot recommend this course for any serious golfer.
Chestatee Golf Club
Played On 09/04/2017Maintenance is a bit slack
Chestatee provides a scenic setting and nice layout. I have played the course a few times each of the last three years. When properly maintained this is a very good golf course. Unfortunately, the bunkers and greens were not in good condition for this round. The bunkers were packed hard and wet despite many days of dry conditions. Many golfers would rate the greens as good, but these green were too wet and slow for the recent weather conditions.
Thank you for your feedback, we are working towards improving our bunkers. Hope you give us another shot soon!
Country Club of the South
Played On 08/22/2017Very Nice
Country Club of the South may be the best Club Corp facility in the Atlanta area. It is certainly well above their other metro north clubs. Everything is as it should be for a top flight private golf club. Club Corp scrimps on grounds maintenance and this is also true at Country Club of the South. The course and grounds are maintained slightly below the other top-flight clubs in Atlanta. This is most evident off the fairways and outside of the golf course. There was also a car break-in the day that I played.
Highland Walk at Victoria Bryant
Played On 08/21/2017Great Golf Setting
Located in Victoria Bryant state park, Highland Walk offers up a very good golf course in a beautiful hilly forest setting. The course is straightforward and not overly long. Elevations changes provide most of the challenge. I try to make the longish drive once a year to enjoy the golf and scenery. The lack of off-course amenities such as a restaurant keep Highland Walk from the receiving a 4-star rating. Highly recommended.
Thanks for your feedback. We are looking at ways to improve our small food and beverage operation. We recently teamed up with Bar-H Barbeque restaurant to offer BBQ sandwiches and (coming soon) some other items off their menu.
Lakemont at Stone Mountain Golf Course
Played On 08/03/2017Poor Conditioning and a Poor Value
I typically play Stone Mountain - Lakemont a few times each year, but this was only my second round in the past two years. Lakemont essentially lost the greens making play less than enjoyable. The bent grass has mostly recovered, but the greens are still quite poor (slow, bumpy and inconsistent). The bunkers are also not being properly maintained and the rough is covered in grass clippings. Better maintenance would not make Lakemont a good value. The $15 park entry fee is no longer offset by the golf course and is essentially a $15 surcharge for playing this poorly maintained course. I rarely give a 1-star review without slow play being involved, but the surcharge is in my opinion simply over the top. There are much better golf options in the Atlanta metro than Stone Mountain.
Arrowhead Pointe At Lake Richard B. Russell
Played On 08/01/2017Great Track
I have played some top 10 public courses and this is absolutely one of the best municipal courses in the U.S. On a value basis, Arrowhead Pointe may be the best municipal in the U.S. The undulating tifeagle Bermuda greens are receptive yet roll great. Most fairways provide adequate landing areas, but some care is needed to find a preferred position. Hole lengths are well balanced and provide good variety. The elevation changes add to the challenge without being drastic. Avoiding the rough is critical. While not overly deep, the Bermuda rough is quite thick. The bunkers (sand traps) needed some grooming, but otherwise seemed to be in good condition.
The State of Georgia operates Arrowhead Point. The service level is average for the price range. While the on-course experience was near 5 stars, the overall golf club and experience is not consistent with a five-star facility. Very highly recommended. Note: I rate golf courses on an absolute scale using the following guidelines:
5 stars - Top tier golf course, all amenities, outstanding service/management and excellent course maintenance.
4 stars - Good to great course layout, complete club experience (full practice facilities, locker room, grill, etc...), efficient service/management, very good course maintenance.
3 stars - Good course layout, average practice facilities, average service/management, average course maintenance. No pace of play problems.
2 stars - Nothing special, but an enjoyable course to play. Only minor issues with pace of play.
1 star - Not worth the effort or serious pace of play issues. I take pace of play very seriously.
A 5-hour round is a minimum two-star reduction.
Chattahoochee Golf Club
Played On 07/30/2017Outstanding
Chattahoochee Golf Club provides a good test while being very fair to the player. The course is in fabulous condition and is about as good as a Muni can be. I have played both the North and South courses at Torrey Pines. Chattahoochee GC can't match the vistas of the South course, but the golfing experience is as good.
Chestatee Golf Club
Played On 07/29/2017Great Track - Needs a little TLC
We found Chestatee to be very clean and playable for this round. The bent grass greens were soft, slightly slow and a bit bumpy. This is somewhat normal for late July as superintendents attempt to keep the bent grass healthy in the heat. Many of the bunkers need repair and/or rehabilitation. In general, the bunkers were groomed, but the sand was more like mud. A few bunkers had too many rocks mixed in. Overall, a good round. Highly recommended course. With better greens and bunkers, this is a solid 4-star facility.

Collins Hill Golf Club
Played On 07/28/2017Fun course that should be better
I play about 25 different golf courses each year. This usually includes at least one round at Collins Hill. The course conditions are ok, but a significant renovation is needed. The staff seems to be making the most of what they have. My only negative maintenance observation was several trees that need to be removed or trimmed. Munis in locations with much smaller tax bases than Gwinnett country operate considerably better facilities. This includes a few in metro Atlanta.
Royal Lakes Golf & Country Club
Played On 07/23/2017Poor Course Conditions
Royal Lakes is an excellent layout that is not being maintained. I have previously played Royal Lakes when the greens were some of the best in the area. However, the greens and bunkers have degraded to the point of barely playable. The greens are not smooth and very slow. Some greens have many large dead or bare areas. The bunkers do not appear to be receiving any regular maintenance. I cannot recommend this course when in this condition.
Chateau Elan Golf Club - Chateau Course
Played On 07/19/2017Not Able to Get It Right
I have written several highly critical Chateau Elan reviews. This review is also critical, but better than some prior reviews. This is my first round on the Chateau Course since the rebuild. I last played the Chateau course the day it washed out.
The course is nice, but not well maintained for a facility of this potential caliber. The place looked like a cut hay field before bailing. My biggest conditioning issue was the greens. These greens are rock hard and slow. I understand new Bermuda greens being hard, but these should roll perfect in mid-July with the nearly ideal growing conditions these past few months. There were only a few groups out and the pace of play was very nice for the first time ever.
The practice tee was closed so that the grass could be cut. I expect this on Monday, but not late morning on Thursday. This is yet another poor experience attributable to how Chateau Elan’s golf course operations are managed.
Earlier this week, I played a course where the average green fee is less than half of the typical fee at Chateau Elan. The course was better maintained and I had a better experience.
Hi "DG1" Thank you for coming out to play and providing your feedback. We are sorry to hear you were dissatisfied with your experience. We can assure you we are constantly working on the condition of the course and have made significant progress over the last year, especially following our greens renovation. Regarding the driving range, please be aware that our typical day to mow the range is on Thursdays. We apologize that you were unable to warm up and would always recommend calling in advance to make sure our practice area is available. If you would like to discuss your experience further, please email proshop@chateauelan.com. Again, we send our utmost apologies and hope you will come back soon to give us another chance!
The Creek At Hard Labor State Park
Played On 07/16/2017Great course that should be much better
The Creek Golf Course at Hard Labor state park is a very good layout in a perfect setting and one of my favorite courses. While very playable, maintenance has not been in-line with the potential caliber of the course. The greens were once fantastic, but are now only ok. Grass mowing is inconsistent with some areas a few yards from the fairway knee high. Only the bunkers were above average. The Creek does not provide much in the way of service or play management.
Chestatee Golf Club
Played On 07/03/2017Good Course & Enjoyable Round
The course is moderately challenging with generous fairways, nice bent grass greens and some mountain scenery. Many bunkers need reconditioning and/or repair. The weather was hot so the bent green were a bit slow by necessity. The greens were otherwise well groomed and smooth. A very enjoyable course with some challenging holes. Chetatee could easily be a 4-star course with some bunker maintenance.
White Columns Golf Club
Played On 06/28/2017Nice Facilities - Course Needs TLC
I have played White Columns twice over a span of 15 years. The practice facilities and other off course amenities have vastly improved, but the golf course has seen a significant decline. 15 years ago, I would have rated White Columns as the best course that I had ever played. This is still a nice layout, but is simply not maintained to a high standard. The fairways were hard and thin. Greens were slow, but otherwise ok. General upkeep was only slightly above average. As a somewhat upper tier private club, the golf course simply does not meet the expected standard.
