A little disappointed

The course conditions were a little below par , unfortunately , not in a good way.
The restaurant and "country club" seem to be booming...as the parking lot was packed.
I love playing an old style ( wooded) course every so often, however; I feel like the course has taken a step back since my last time here. Dry conditions throughout...but am willing to play again , down the road.
Never saw a beverage cart.

Great executive ( game improvement ) course.

Got a Gonga deal ( Hot Deal ), so the price was fantastic. All par 3's & 4's. Greens are fairly small, and all are elevated, making approach shots challenging. If you're looking to improve your short game, this course will help. Still ( long enough ) par 4's to allow you a variety of club selections.
Can't say enough about the friendly staff.
There are many folks out that are high handi cappers , so be aware. Leave your 'short fuse' at home. This is a laid back atmosphere.....enjoy yourself.

O.B. Sports seems to 'get it'.

Second day ,after opening for overseeding, course was in great shape. ( Still somewhat shaggy, especially the tee boxes, but expected. )
Old style course ( par 70 ), pretty flat, with lots of mature trees. ( they really don't come into play...or shouldn't.)
We were first off ( 6:16 ), and managed a 3 hour round. Pretty good for a foursome.
I play this course , maybe, once a year...but it's still fun, especially now that O.B.Sports keeps it in stellar shape.

great value

New management.
Course was a little too wet in places , and the rough was...really rough! ( tough to locate your ball , if out of the fairway.)
All in all though , a good value on an old school course. ( lots of trees...through an established neighborhood, although you never really notice the homes, as they don't come into play.)
I'm sure new management will work out the kinks. I'll be back.

Thanks oldenglish! We are glad you enjoyed it! The reason for the wet areas, was due to Bermuda grass sprigging we have been doing all summer. After planting the new Bermuda grass, we need to keep it very wet, which turns some areas a little too wet!! We look forward to seeing you out next time. pleasantly surprised

With over an hour's drive to get there, I was really taking a chance. ( especially with a couple of previous reviews )
The drive to Sonoita, and through Patagonia is relaxing and beautiful. I was lucky, in that the weather was unusually cooler and overcast. ( usually, this time of year , it's well into the 100's, with a unrelenting sun.) My round...it never got over 80 degrees!
Anyway, I found the course...a lot of fun! Nearly every hole was elevated , either tee box or green. The fairways were a bit ( rough )...but unless you're a scratch golfer, and a stickler for "play it as it lies"...move it to a better piece of turf. I was here to have fun , after all.
The course offered a change from the norm, in that a lot of fairways had extreme undulation right after your tee shot. I know that after playing my first round here , additional rounds I might choose a different club, rather than just trying to bomb every tee shot over the large dips. ( like I said , fun. )
Other than the fairway condition , the boxes and greens were pretty good. The beauty of the rolling hills and desert was great, also. Cart girl was never far away , and friendly.
So, if you're looking for a course that's unpretentious , with beauty to boot....give it a try. I'll go back.

Long El Rio

Nothing special...but OK. Fairways were less than stellar, but greens were pretty good. Play was a little.slow , which is kind of a sore spot for me. ( pick it up and move on when the group behind you is staring you down every hole. )
( ranger...what ranger? )
Got a Hot-Deal , through Golf Now....$42.00 + fees...= $49.00. Way too much for this course. If you can get a tee time , this time of year , for $35.00 , or less , go for it. $50.00! , never again.

challenging , with good views.

Been many years since I last played here; really fun , challenging layout. The course is in better than average shape. It was a cool and cloudy day , ( but turned out perfect ), so we had the course to ourselves. That alone was worth the greens fees. We never even saw another golfer until #17 !
This course has many undulating fairways and elevated tee boxes, adding to it's allure. Trees lining many holes , and just the right amount of hazards, make club selection an important factor. I found myself with a lot of 30-60 yard shots to greens. ( obviously I need to work on club selection. )
All in all...another course to add to my list. ( I tend to get bored playing the same courses )

pleasantly surprised

If you believed the past reviews , you probably would skip this course. Don't believe them. ( although I couldn't find a recent one ; it was a leap of faith in giving it a shot ) Glad I did. The course is almost completely back from over seeding. The fairways were a little long...but very playable. The greens were a bit sandy, but quick and receptive. ( yay! been playing slow and shaggy courses for ever, it seems. ) There were a few mushy areas in the fairways....and the cart paths could use some help....but I'm just being picky.
If Benson would advertise San Pedro to the Vail and Tucson markets , I'm sure they would get some loyal customers.

All in all , a great layout with flats to elevation changes....risk and reward holes....and a laid back atmosphere that I have only found out in Rio Rico. ( but that is a whole different discussion. )

We'll see wether San Pedro can keep prices down in order to compete with the Tucson markets. So far , so good.

shaggy baby.

Forgot how beautiful this course is....and challenging. Last time I played here it was not more than a cow pasture, as far as fairways and greens. Today showed all the promise of what's to come, in the very near future. The rough and fairways were really long and shaggy. ( But that was to be expected after over seeding. ) Hard to believe that its sister course , ( Torres Blancas ), right across the highway can be so much different from this one. ( I enjoy them both; 1 pretty flat and one with all the elevation changes you could want. )
As soon as the greens get in better shape ( really sparse and bumpy ), and the rough and fairways are cut ....this is definitely the course I'll play , with my friends, more often.
*** please don't jack the greens fees so high that we'll need to start playing the munies this winter ***

big thumbs up

Last minute tee time ( used Golf Now ); Great price ( under $25.00 ) Condition of fairways were above average, and the greens were immaculate. Although this is ,somewhat, a target course, it plays fair when you need it to. ( plenty of places to bomb it ) I lost a few balls ( don't even bother to look for them ), but still managed a decent round. ( for me...89 ) With the condition of this track, great summer rates ( I played at 6:45, in 3 hours ), quality facilities, good food and a friendly staff...I'll be back. Soon.

long, but fair.

Great conditioned course. Played at 10:45, so was pretty hot. ( close to 100, with golf course humidity ) It's been over 10 years since I've played here...Will become a regular if conditions remain as good as they were yesterday. Challenging par 3's and wide open fairways ( allow all but the worst shots ) a chance at redemption.

shaggy baby.

Fairways were much improved from the last time I played, however; greens were extremely bumpy and shaggy. Because of the greens condition, this turned into a practice round. Unfortunately, the bunkers were mostly under water and unplayable. ( note: I did have the first tee time of the day @ 6:00 )

Course is in better shape, by far, than any other Green Valley course I've played. Greens were fantastic. Bunkers were disappointing; soft on top, but like concrete 1/2" down. Only one bit of advice; bring mosquito repellent !

great value

Course is fairly rough currently. It was recently purchased and is in the beginning stages of reconditioning and remodeling. The rough is pretty much unplayable and tee boxes are a disaster. So Why do I love this course? It's a combination of things...the great people they employ, the relaxed atmosphere of Rio Rico, a fun tract ( especially the front 9 ) and the promise of good things to come ( with new ownership. ).
I'll be back...and I have an hour drive just to get there !
