Bella Collina Golf Club
Played On 01/28/2014Bella Colina
A unique experience for Central Florida golf with unexpected elevation changes from tee to green. Wide open fairways and undulating greens, sometimes times too undulating. Not a bad experience although the course will never be considered great because there are far too many blind tee shots and approach shots.
Rio Pinar Golf
Played On 01/27/2014Rio Pinar
Rio Pinar is a classic old Florida golf course. Once host to the PGA Tour's Citrus Open, Rio Pinar still maintains it's character as a championship venue. Recently acquired by Celebration Golf, Rio Pinar has renovated parts of the course and resurfaced their greens. Course conditions can vary depending on the season, but should remain good under the new ownership. A great walking course and easy to play.
Medalist Golf Club
Played On 01/20/2014Medalist
Medalist Golf Club is a fantastic experience, however it is very difficult. Greg Norman brought a piece of Royal Melbourne to the southeast coast of Florida. The course conditions at Medalist are a large part of the courses challenge; the greens are firm and fast with lies around the greens that are very tight. There is some room off the tee, but the cost of missing the fairway is severe. The clubhouse and men's grill room are very cool and the practice facilities are great. A unique course in Florida and absolutely worth playing if given the opportunity, but bring an extra dozen golf balls.
Grand Cypress - North/South
Played On 01/15/2014North/South
One of the original resort destinations in Orlando, the North/South at Grand Cypress continues to be one of the best courses around. A classic Nicklaus design through a beautiful Florida setting. A few years ago, Grand Cypress re-designed the greens and this was unnecessary. Parts of the golf course have become too severe as a result of the re-design. Always in great condition, distinct holes and greens complexes that are memorable. A wonderful facility with spacious practice area, clubhouse and teaching academy.
Heathrow Country Club
Played On 01/15/2014Heathrow
One of the best courses in Central Florida. Heathrow is a very enjoyable course always in great shape. Not demanding off the tee, Heathrow is a second shot golf course with small greens. Truly a classic layout, unlike many courses in Florida, Heathrow gives you many options off the tee and around the green. This is always a trademark of any good golf course and is certainly the case at Heathrow. Very nice clubhouse and great practice facility. Always worth playing Heathrow.
Orange Tree Golf Club
Played On 01/14/2014Orange Tree
This is one of the most challenging courses and best kept secrets in the state of Florida. Orange Tree is often overshadowed by its more notable neighbor Bay Hill, but is every bit the golf course Bay Hill is and in better condition. The Orange Tree greens were recently renovated and putt as well as any Bermuda grass surfaces in the state. If you need proof of an excellent golf course, ask the many PGA Tour, web.com Tour and LPGA Tour players who call Orange Tree home.
MetroWest Golf Club
Played On 01/07/2014Metro West
A nice golf course, nothing to write home about. Always is good condition and fun course to play, mostly because it's wide open. There are no tight tee shots or intimidating holes, which can make for an enjoyable day. Worth playing for the price.
The Golden Bear Club at Keene's Point
Played On 12/20/2013Keene's Pointe
Keene's Pointe is a classic Jack Nickalus design and one of only a few in Central Florida. Ample room off the tee, Keene's Pointe is a second shot golf course. Narrow greens are mostly elevated with severe and deep bunkering around most complexes. Always in great shape and very enjoyable to play. A great setting, through a housing development, but in no way obtrusive to the golf course. Often overlooked as a top course in Orlando because of its close proximity to better known Isleworth, Keene's Pointe can hold it's own with all the best in Orlando.
The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Orlando, Grande Lakes
Played On 10/24/2013Ritz Orlando
A nice golf course in Orlando, but "typical" resort destination. Everything you would expect from a Ritz Carlton property exists at this golf course, but the course itself is not memorable. Beautiful conditions, but built on a nondescript, flat piece of property. Relatively easy to get around, the Greg Norman design offers very little intrigue of from hole to hole. Only worth playing if the price is right.
UNC Finley Golf Course
Played On 10/09/2013UNC
A great university course, UNC Finley can hold up against many of the best university courses in the country. Tom Fazio did a nice job with this project, however he had limited acreage to work with and it shows at some points of the course. It has been in good shape the times I have played, and presents all the challenge you need. Well worth playing and always a good price.
Pinehurst Resort & Country Club - No. 2
Played On 10/02/2013#2
The redesign on Pinehurst #2 is excellent. Native grasses and indigenous sand dunes have made for a very natural feeling upgrade to Donald's masterpiece. Tee to green Pinehurst is excellent and the course doesn't begin until you get to the greens. A unique golf experience, Pinehurst is a wonderful US Open venue that presents different challenges then most classic US Open designs with thick rough etc. Having access to Pinehurst is great, BUT it is run like a corporate money grab. The range and practice facilities are in poor shape, the pace of play is slow and some of the character and charm is lost as it is run more like a factory then a golf club. None of this overshadows the course itself, but the overall experience could be even better.
Muirfield Village Golf Club
Played On 10/01/2013Jack's Place
By far Jack Nicklaus' best course design. Absolutely perfect condition with an amazing variation of holes, shot values and undulations. Perfect setting for golf with every detail accounted for. A must play if ever given the chance.
The Golf Club of New England
Played On 09/10/2013GCNE
A great golf course and one of the few championship venues in Northern New England. Still a new property and will continue to evolve and improve as the course matures. Unique to the area with the size and challenge of the golf course. Unique routing and hole layout give GCNE a very memorable feel. Distinct style to every hole, not a similar hole on the property. Fantastic driving range with amazing turf. Recently hosted the USGA Jr. Am and is capable of hosting any major event including a PGA TOUR stop. Modern in its reality, classic in its feel. Play if ever given the chance.
Ocean Forest Golf Club
Played On 08/12/2013Ocean Forest
This golf course is fantastic. A perfect setting for golf with a mix of tree lines fairways and low country rivers and ocean. The course is very challenging especially from the back tees. The clubhouse and men's grill room is exactly what you want for a relaxing club environment and the practice facility is top notch. 5 of the 18 holes have ocean/river views and the rest of the course is secluded from homes, roads or buildings of any kind. A very peaceful place and wonderful golf course setting.
Black at Bethpage State Park Golf Course
Played On 07/12/2013Bethpage Black
Possibly the best tee to green golf course in the country and one of Tillinghast's finest works. Dramatic bunkering, defined fairways and 18 unique holes make the Black course very memorable. This is a classic layout that has remained strong in the modern era of golf equipment. The greens are relatively flat with the exception of the 15th hole. A must play if given the opportunity and one of the best US Open venues ever played.
York Golf & Tennis Club
Played On 07/10/2013YG&TC
This is the best golf course in the state of Maine and the most underrated Donald Ross design in the country. While only 6,200 yards, the YG&TC offers plenty of challenge for even the most experienced players. The beautiful York river plays as the backdrop for holes 5-9 and the remaining holes can be characterized as interesting, charming and full of character. The YG&TC always presents a different challenge based on the season and varying weather conditions. Usually in good shape, if given the opportunity to play, it's a must.
Portsmouth Country Club
Played On 07/01/2013Portsmouth CC
One of the true championship golf courses in Northern New England. A classic Robert Trent Jones design in a beautiful setting amongst the marshes of the Great Bay. Long and challenging in spots, but not as demanding if the rough is down. Can be a very long course and if in the right condition could be a great test of golf. One of the more peaceful settings you will ever experience on a golf course. Love PCC and any avid golfer will appreciate this place.
Cypress Point Club
Played On 06/24/2013Cypress Point
Dr. McKenzie said of Cypress Point: "I do not expect anyone to have the opportunity of constructing another course like Cypress Point, as I do not suppose anywhere in the world is there such a glorious combination of rocky coast, sand dunes, pine forrest and cypress trees". Dr. McKenzie understood the piece of property he was working with and delivered a masterpiece to the world of golf. Extremely enjoyable and endlessly fascinating, Cypress Point lives up to its billing. One of the best golf experiences possible, Cypress Point did not disappoint. Bob Jones said it best "Pebble Beach is harder, Cypress is more fun"
Shadow Creek Golf Course
Played On 04/26/2013Shadow Creek
This was possibly the best golf experience of my life. Playing Shadow Creek is something all avid golfers should experience. The unique setting of a manufactured environment in the Nevada desert is like nothing I have seen in golf. While manufactured, the course matches the environment perfectly. This is Tom Fazios best work as a course architect; playable, different and fair golf holes make the golf experience at Shadow Creek very memorable. The course condition is second to none and the clubhouse setting reminded more of Augusta National then the Las Vegas strip. If golf exists in heaven, I hope they've been to Shadow Creek.
The Preserve Golf Club
Played On 04/22/2013The Preserve
Vastly overrated and is not a top 100 golf course in America. Set amongst beautiful mountains with great vistas the course itself is relatively forgettable. Relatively non-descript holes make the Preserve nice, but not great. I was waiting for the spectacular moment of the course and it never came. A serene setting gives the Preserve the air of exclusivity, perhaps making it too empty. I saw only one other group the entire day. Elaborate clubhouse and nice bar and grill room, but 30 minutes from any civilization. Really tough to compare the Preserve to the iconic clubs in the area, playing inland golf on the Monterey Peninsula doesn't seem right. If given the opportunity, sleep in, get brunch and go for a walk on the beach in Carmel instead.
I couldn't disagree with this post any more. If you like beautiful settings and flawless grass on the fairways and greens, this is your kind of place. It's a beautiful serene setting and it's very unique, set into the mountains of Santa Lucia Highlands. We saw quail, bobcat, deer and turkey. It was just awesome! It's certainly not a coastal course, but it's special in it's own right.
